23rd National Athletics Championship for the Blind Concludes in Nadiad with Enthusiastic Participation
Nadiad (Gujarat), December 16: The 23rd National Athletics Championship for the Blind, one of India’s largest events for visually impaired athletes, successfully concluded on Monday at the Sports Complex in Nadiad, Gujarat. The event, which began on Saturday, saw over 400 athletes from across the nation competing in various disciplines.
Athletes from states and union territories including Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and others participated, showcasing remarkable talent in track and field events, chess, and relay races. The competition was not only a celebration of athletic skill but also a significant step towards greater inclusion, as this edition allowed entire states to participate for the first time instead of just affiliates.
David Absalom, the Honorary General Secretary of the Indian Blind Sports Association (IBSA), highlighted the importance of this year’s championship, emphasizing its shift to a more inclusive format. “This historic change represents our ongoing commitment to providing more opportunities for blind athletes across India,” he said. “Each participant here is a champion, and we’re confident many will go on to represent the country on the global stage.”
USHA International, the title sponsor, also voiced its support for the event. Komal Mehra, Head of Sports Initiatives at USHA, expressed, “Sports is a powerful tool for empowerment, and this event is proof of the incredible potential of visually challenged athletes. It’s a proud moment for all involved and sets a strong precedent for inclusive sports in India.”
The championship provided a platform for athletes aged 19 and above in different categories such as T-11 & F-11 (visually impaired) and T-12, T-13 & F-12, F-13 (low vision). The competition featured a range of events, including sprints, throws, jumps, and chess. All events adhered to international standards, ensuring a thrilling and competitive environment for the athletes.
The successful conclusion of this championship marks a significant milestone in the journey of blind sports in India, promoting not only competition but also inclusivity and empowerment for visually impaired athletes.
