New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PM-JAY) for senior citizens on October 29, according to sources close to the matter.

Last month, the Union Cabinet, led by the Prime Minister, approved a significant expansion of this public health insurance initiative, which provides cashless coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year for hospitalizations for all citizens aged 70 and older, regardless of their socio-economic background.

“A major event is scheduled for October 29, where several significant health projects will be launched or announced, including PM-JAY,” said a senior central government official, who requested anonymity.

The central government will cover 60% of the scheme’s costs, while states can choose to expand or modify the program to include additional age groups.

According to the Union Health Ministry, this initiative is expected to benefit around 45 million families (approximately 60 million senior citizens). Currently, the total beneficiary base stands at 123 million families.

Eligible senior citizens will need to apply to receive benefits; however, those already covered by government health insurance schemes will have the option to choose which program they prefer. According to a government statement, individuals with private insurance will also be able to participate.

Eligible beneficiaries will be issued a new card under the scheme. The initial budget for this upgrade is ₹3,437 crore, with provisions for expanding coverage in the future based on demand.
