Remembering a Trailblazer
Mahaparinirvan Diwas, observed annually on December 6, marks the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, fondly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar. Born on April 14, 1891, Dr. Ambedkar was a jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who spearheaded campaigns against caste-based discrimination and championed the rights of Dalits, women, and workers.
A key figure in drafting the Indian Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar dedicated his life to the pursuit of equality and the eradication of social injustices. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1990.
Significance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas
The term Mahaparinirvan, derived from Buddhist texts, signifies ‘nirvana after death,’ representing liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and karma. The day, which holds immense importance in the Buddhist calendar, is observed as a tribute to Dr. Ambedkar’s transformative contributions to society.
Dr. Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956, at his residence in Delhi. Mahaparinirvan Diwas stands as a solemn reminder of his remarkable legacy and the ongoing efforts to realize his vision of an equitable society.
