Indian Air Force officer and ISRO astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is set to make history as the pilot for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private space mission that will travel to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The mission, slated for launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, is scheduled to take place no earlier than spring 2025.

Shukla, who also serves as an astronaut for India’s Gaganyaan mission, will be the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS in a private space mission, marking a significant milestone for India’s space exploration ambitions. The mission will be commanded by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, now Director of Human Spaceflight at Axiom Space. Shukla will join two mission specialists: Sławosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of the European Space Agency (ESA) from Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary.

Axiom Mission 4 is part of a series of private astronaut missions to the ISS, designed to expand human access to low Earth orbit and promote international collaboration in space exploration. Dana Weigel, manager of NASA’s ISS Program, expressed excitement about the continued dedication toward private astronaut missions, noting that such missions help expand access to the unique microgravity environment of the space station. These missions also lay the groundwork for future space endeavors as NASA looks to evolve its approach to low Earth orbit activities.

This mission will follow in the footsteps of previous successful Axiom missions. Axiom Mission 1, the first private astronaut mission to the ISS, launched in April 2022 and saw a crew of private astronauts spending 17 days aboard the space station. Axiom Mission 2 followed in May 2023, with Whitson commanding a crew of four private astronauts for an eight-day mission. Most recently, Axiom Mission 3 launched in January 2024, with its crew spending 18 days docked at the ISS.

In a statement, Peggy Whitson praised the diverse Ax-4 crew, stating, “Witnessing their selfless dedication and commitment to expanding horizons and creating opportunities for their nations in space exploration is truly remarkable.” She added that the unique strengths and perspectives of each crew member make the mission a testament to human ingenuity and teamwork.

Meanwhile, NASA is working with SpaceX to safely return Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and astronaut Butch Wilmore, who have been stranded aboard the ISS for 238 days. This follows a claim by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who stated that US President Donald Trump had requested him to expedite the return of Williams and Wilmore.

With Shubhanshu Shukla’s upcoming mission to the ISS, India’s growing space presence continues to make waves on the global stage, contributing to the international push for more private sector involvement in space exploration.
