    Healthy snacks like Makhana (fox nuts) can cost Rs 500 per kg, while unhealthy snacks like bhujia are much cheaper at Rs 330 per kg.
  4. Greek Yogurt vs Curd:
    Greek yogurt, packed with protein, costs Rs 325 for 400 gm, while regular curd is priced at just Rs 35.
  5. Fruit Juices vs Real Fruit:
    1 kg of pomegranate costs Rs 448, while 1 liter of ‘pure’ pomegranate juice is Rs 450, but sugary versions are as low as Rs 130.

Why the Price Difference?

The price disparity is due to several factors: supply chain issues, climate change, and the convenience of processed foods. Dietitian Kanikka Malhotra explains, “Nutritious foods can cost up to three times more than unhealthy options.”

While healthy eating is more expensive upfront, experts argue that the long-term financial benefits—such as fewer medical bills due to better health—make it a worthwhile investment. Nutritionist Debjani Gupta adds, “Investing in your health is better than spending on hospitalizations later.”

Affordable Healthy Eating Solutions

Despite the cost, eating healthy on a budget is possible with some planning. Here are some budget-friendly tips:

  • Affordable protein sources: Lentils, chickpeas, beans, eggs, tofu, and peanuts.
  • Complex carbohydrates: Whole wheat roti, oats, and millets.
  • Healthy fats: Mustard and groundnut oils.
  • Seasonal produce: Buying fruits and vegetables in season can cut costs.

Fitness on a Budget

Fitness doesn’t have to be expensive. Running, squats, and push-ups are free and can be done outdoors. With consistency, you can maintain your health without the need for costly gym memberships.
