Uber’s ‘Pet-Friendly’ Service Faces Backlash for High Prices and Poor Service
Pet owners in India are facing increasing challenges when it comes to travelling with their furry companions. A recent incident has brought attention to Uber’s ‘Uber Pet’ feature, which allows pets to travel with their owners but at a significantly higher cost and with poor service.
On Thursday, actress Swastika Mukherjee highlighted the issue after Chitrangada Singh, who runs an NGO in Delhi, faced difficulties while trying to transport six rescued puppies to a clinic. When Chitrangada booked an Uber Go ride for a five-kilometre trip, the fare was Rs 150. However, opting for the ‘Uber Pet’ feature saw the price skyrocket to Rs 487, almost three times the original fare.
Upon arriving at the pickup point, the driver refused to accept the pups, insisting that she book a ‘pet taxi’. Chitrangada had no idea about this option and, in a medical emergency, had to resort to the ‘Uber Pet’ service at a much higher price.
When India Today contacted Uber for clarification, a spokesperson explained that the higher price was meant to cover the cost of vehicle cleaning and maintenance after the ride, ensuring comfort for future passengers. However, this didn’t address the concerns of pet owners who believe the service isn’t meeting their expectations.
Uber’s official policy allows service animals at all times, but non-service animals like pets are only allowed at the driver’s discretion. In some cities, the ‘Uber Pet’ feature is available, but it only permits one pet per ride.
The incident isn’t unique, as pet owners across India frequently face struggles when trying to find pet-friendly travel options. Ayush Das, an engineering student with five dogs, shares how difficult it is to travel with pets. “Cabs, hotels, and even cafes often don’t allow them,” he says.
Affordability is also a significant concern. Raising a pet has become an expensive affair with high costs for quality food, grooming, and vet visits. For many, having a pet is a labor of love, not luxury, but the financial burden is undeniable.
Despite the challenges, experts like Rashi Narang, founder of pet-care brand Heads Up For Tails, hope for a future where pets can travel safely and comfortably with their families.
In conclusion, while Uber’s ‘Uber Pet’ service may have been introduced to meet demand, its pricing, limited availability, and lack of driver support leave much to be desired for pet owners across the country.
