Admiral Dinesh Tripathi Holds Talks with Indonesia’s Defence Minister on Enhancing Naval Ties
Jakarta, Indonesia — On December 17, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) of India, met with Indonesia’s Minister of Defence, Lt. General Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin (retd), to discuss the growing defence relationship between the two nations. The talks, held on Tuesday, focused on strengthening maritime cooperation, with an emphasis on operational engagements and joint training initiatives.
During the meeting, Admiral Tripathi underscored the potential for enhanced collaboration in the defence industry, aiming to foster closer cooperation between India and Indonesia. The Indian Navy spokesperson shared a statement on X, highlighting the discussions on expanding India-Indonesia defence ties, particularly in the maritime domain. The statement read, “Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, #CNS, during the ongoing visit to #Indonesia, called on Lt Gen Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin (retd), Minister of Defence, Republic of Indonesia, marking a significant step in deepening defence ties.”
The meeting also highlighted opportunities for collaboration between the two nations to enhance their mutual interests in maritime security. Key topics included the sharing of operational engagements and joint training initiatives, which are crucial for fostering strong naval cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
In addition to his meeting with Defence Minister Sjamsoeddin, Admiral Tripathi was received with a ceremonial Guard of Honour by Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of the Indonesian Navy, on December 16. The two officials held discussions aimed at strengthening the Navy-to-Navy partnership through enhanced operational interactions, joint training exercises, and maritime security cooperation. They also explored avenues for increasing interoperability and capacity-building between the Indian and Indonesian navies.
An Indian Navy spokesperson noted that the discussions focused on advancing the shared vision of India-Indonesia Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. “Avenues for enhancing interoperability and capacity-building were also deliberated during the meeting,” the spokesperson added.
Admiral Tripathi’s official visit to Indonesia includes further high-level engagements with key Indonesian defence officials, including Lt. General Agus Subiyanto. These discussions are set to cover a broad range of defence cooperation areas, with a particular focus on maritime security, joint training, and enhancing operational collaboration between the two navies.
This visit underscores the strong maritime ties between India and Indonesia, reinforcing the shared vision of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The existing maritime collaboration between the two countries already includes joint exercises, port visits, and capacity-building training initiatives. Currently, the 43rd India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol is underway along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
According to the Ministry of Defence, Admiral Tripathi’s visit is expected to further solidify the friendship and cooperation between the two navies, ensuring stronger collaboration in areas of mutual interest. The ongoing efforts highlight the importance of India-Indonesia relations and their shared commitment to maritime security in the region.
