Upon his arrival at the BSF Tripura Frontier Headquarters, Sharma was greeted warmly by fellow officers and accorded a ceremonial guard of honour. Sharing the update on X (formerly Twitter), BSF Tripura stated, “Ashwani Kumar Sharma, IG, BSF, on 16th December 2024, assumed the charge of Inspector General of BSF Tripura. He was given a guard of honour. He paid homage to martyrs, interacted with officers & reviewed the present security scenario across the Tripura border.”

Sharma is a seasoned officer of the 1987 batch and brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Before this posting, he served at the BSF Training Centre in Indore and has worked extensively in both the Eastern and Western Commands. His expertise spans counter-insurgency and anti-naxal operations. Additionally, Sharma has been on deputation with the National Security Guard (NSG) and the United Nations Mission. Notably, he is no stranger to Tripura, having worked in the region earlier during his career, according to an official release.

Later in the day, IG Sharma met with Shri Anurag, IPS, the Additional Director General of Police for Tripura, to discuss the security situation along the Tripura border. “Today, on December 16, 2024, Sh Ashwani Kumar Sharma, IG, BSF, Tripura Frontier, paid a courtesy visit to Shri Anurag, IPS, Additional Director General of Police Tripura & discussed the present security scenario across the Tripura Border,” BSF Tripura shared on X.

The BSF, often referred to as the world’s largest border guarding force with a strength of approximately 2.65 lakh personnel, holds a unique mandate. The force not only guards India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh but also plays a critical role during wartime and peacetime. On Thursday, October 24, 2024, the Union government formally announced Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India, effective November 11.

A notification from the Department of Justice stated, “Pursuant to the authority granted by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, a Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, effective November 11, 2024.”

Justice Khanna will serve as Chief Justice of India for just over six months, concluding his term on May 13, 2025.
