Gurugram (Haryana), December 11: The BMW Group and UNICEF have announced a groundbreaking partnership in India to transform education for 100,000 children across four states. This initiative emphasizes foundational learning and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills, targeting children from early years through adolescence.

This partnership aims to provide quality STEM education to adolescent girls from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and Tribal Ashramshalas in rural areas of Assam, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. These girls, belonging to marginalized communities, will gain access to innovative learning opportunities through this collaboration. The initiative is part of a broader global partnership between BMW Group and UNICEF, which seeks to empower over 10 million children annually in countries where BMW operates, including South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, and Thailand.

Focus on Foundational Learning and STEM Skills

In India, the BMW-UNICEF partnership will focus on enhancing foundational literacy and numeracy skills in rural primary schools. This effort aims to create a solid cognitive foundation for children. As they transition into adolescence, the program will introduce them to engaging and creative STEM learning experiences through low-cost maker spaces, fostering curiosity, creativity, and imagination.

Working alongside the Government of India and state governments, BMW and UNICEF aim to create an inclusive learning environment that aligns with national goals for gender equality and education. “Current employment opportunities demand competencies in STEM. Girls particularly miss out on opportunities to learn and practice STEM. UNICEF is proud to support building a strong foundation for critical thinking in the early years of learning. The BMW-UNICEF partnership makes this possible by investing in making education more accessible and inclusive, especially for girls. The result is greater economic and social self-reliance, leading to more opportunities,” said Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF India Representative.

Empowering Girls Through STEM Education

Vikram Pawah, President and CEO, BMW Group India, highlighted the transformative potential of education. “BMW Group sees itself as an integral part of society, and through impactful initiatives, we want to drive deep-rooted social change. BMW Group’s partnership with UNICEF harnesses the most powerful tool for empowerment – education. STEM knowledge is crucial for smart thinking and innovation in today’s competitive, interconnected environment. Merging this educational initiative with gender equality and inclusion, especially for underprivileged girls in India, enhances its effectiveness exponentially,” he stated.

Key Components of the Collaboration

  1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: Recognizing that children struggling with basic reading and numeracy face challenges in school, the program prioritizes foundational skills to build a robust cognitive base for STEM education.
  2. Teacher Training: UNICEF will design a specialized curriculum to train teachers in STEM instruction. This training will address gender stereotypes and empower girls through skills development and leadership programs. The initiative aims to create a dedicated cadre of STEM-trained educators.
  3. Maker Spaces: Low-cost maker spaces will be established within schools, offering hands-on STEM learning experiences. These creative hubs will enable adolescent girls to explore design thinking, computational analysis, adaptive learning, and physical computing, sparking curiosity and innovative thinking.
