Singapore, December 13: D Gukesh, India’s newly-crowned FIDE World Chess Champion, created history by becoming the youngest titleholder in the sport’s history. Following his momentous victory, Gukesh received his trophy and, in an emotional gesture, handed it over to his parents amidst loud cheers from the crowd.

Gukesh secured the championship on Thursday by defeating China’s Ding Liren in a thrilling final game. The match, tied at 6.5-6.5 going into the last round, saw a remarkable performance by the young Indian prodigy, culminating in a 7.5-6.5 victory.

Sharing the achievement on its official X handle, FIDE declared, “Gukesh D is the YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION in history!” Videos of Gukesh receiving his trophy and celebrating with his parents went viral, capturing the hearts of chess fans worldwide.

Gukesh had already made waves in April by winning the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament 2024, earning him the right to challenge Ding Liren for the world title. Reflecting on his journey, Gukesh called this victory the “best moment of his life” during the post-match press conference.

Meanwhile, Ding Liren expressed his thoughts on the intense final, saying, “I was totally in shock when I realised I made a blunder. I will continue to play. I think I played my best tournament of the year. It could be better, but considering yesterday’s lucky survival, it is a fair result to lose in the end. I have no regrets.”

The championship series was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Game 13 ending in a draw and setting the stage for a decisive final round. Gukesh’s composure and brilliant gameplay not only secured the world title but also reinforced India’s growing prominence in the global chess arena.

This historic victory marks another milestone for Indian chess, with Gukesh inspiring countless young players to pursue excellence in the sport.
