New Delhi, December 12: Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh has set his sights on an ambitious goal: bringing the coveted World Cup title back to India. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Singh laid out his roadmap for the team’s success, emphasizing the importance of upcoming tournaments like the Hockey India League (HIL), the Pro League, and the Asia Cup.

The Path to the World Cup

“Our major target is the World Cup. It’s been a long time since we won the World Cup, so our main focus is to win it,” said Singh. He stressed that preparation through key tournaments would be instrumental in achieving this goal.

Singh believes the HIL, returning after a long hiatus, will play a pivotal role in gearing up the team for challenges ahead. Following the HIL, the Pro League will provide critical match experience, while the Asia Cup offers an opportunity to win and qualify for the World Cup.

Historic Bid in the Hockey India League

This year, Singh made headlines by joining the Soorma Hockey Club for a record-breaking Rs 78 lakh, marking the highest bid in the league’s history. Elated by the development, Singh said, “I am feeling very good, no doubt. The HIL is back after a long time, and it’s great to participate. This bid is not just financially rewarding but also motivating for all players involved.”

Expressing optimism about his team’s prospects, Singh highlighted the importance of teamwork and experience. “I am confident that all players, from seasoned veterans to young talents, will give their best. I hope Soorma Hockey Club can win the title this time,” he added.

Leadership and Vision

Balancing his roles as captain, penalty corner specialist, and defender, Singh emphasized the importance of leadership on and off the field. “Titles may differ, but the essence of hockey is about planning and execution. My aim is to maintain a positive atmosphere in the team, boost confidence, and ensure effective communication,” he said.

Singh’s decade-long tenure with the national team has equipped him with maturity and insight. Drawing from lessons learned from his seniors, he adapts his leadership approach to suit diverse player mindsets. “Understanding how to motivate players, sometimes with a tough approach, is essential to bringing out their best,” he explained.

Learning from the Past

Reflecting on the emotional highs of winning bronze medals at the Tokyo Olympics and the Paris Olympics, Singh said these victories hold unique significance. “Winning in Tokyo after such a long gap was a proud moment. In Paris, defeating top teams like Australia was equally inspiring. Both medals have their unique histories but are milestones for Indian hockey,” he remarked.

Singh’s individual brilliance also shone in Paris, where he emerged as the tournament’s leading goal-scorer, netting 10 goals in eight matches, surpassing Australia’s Blake Govers.

Towards World Cup Success

With the World Cup as the ultimate goal, Singh is determined to lead by example. He underlined the importance of teamwork, continuous learning, and fostering a winning mentality. “As a leader, it’s about setting an example and motivating others to push their limits. We aim to perform as a team and achieve our shared dream of World Cup glory,” he concluded.

As the Indian hockey team embarks on this challenging journey, Singh’s vision and leadership promise to inspire a new era of success for Indian hockey.
