India-Bangladesh Military Officials Meet to Mark Victory Day
Dhaka, Bangladesh, December 16: A special courtesy meeting took place on Monday between high-ranking military officers from India and Bangladesh to commemorate Bangladesh’s Victory Day. The event, held at the Akhaura-Agartala Integrated Check Post, saw representatives from both countries exchanging greetings and marking the significance of the day.
On behalf of the Bangladesh Army, Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 33 Infantry Division, and Major General Sumit Rana, Chief of Staff of the Indian Army’s 101 Area, attended the meeting. Additionally, three officers from each side, including Captain-level officers from both the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and the Indian Army and BSF, were present.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) of Bangladesh, such courtesy meetings are a tradition, held on nationally significant occasions such as Victory Day and Pahela Boishakh (Bengali New Year). The meeting lasted for 18 minutes and concluded at 11:48 AM local time.
Victory Day, celebrated annually on December 16, marks the day in 1971 when the chief of Pakistan’s armed forces, General Amir Abdullah Niazi, surrendered to the Indian Army and Bangladesh’s Mukti Bahini, alongside 93,000 Pakistani soldiers. This moment marked the culmination of Bangladesh’s nine-month struggle for independence, aided by Indian forces.
