India to Host Maldives for Two FIFA International Friendlies in Bengaluru
The Indian women’s football team will take on the Maldives for two FIFA international friendlies at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru. The matches offer a great opportunity for India to refine their team dynamics as they face a lower-ranked opponent.
Currently ranked 69th in the FIFA women’s football rankings, India will face a Maldives team ranked 163rd globally. The two teams had met earlier in the 2024 SAFF Championship, though they were placed in different groups and did not compete directly.
India’s recent international outings have been challenging. They were knocked out of the 2024 SAFF Championship after a penalty shootout loss to Nepal in the semi-finals, following a 3-1 defeat to Bangladesh in the group stage. In contrast, the Maldives had a difficult campaign, suffering heavy losses, including a 13-0 defeat to Bhutan and an 11-0 loss to Nepal. Their hopes were dashed in the group stage as they failed to advance.
India last met the Maldives in 2021, securing a 3-1 victory. Now, under the guidance of Swedish head coach Joakim Alexandersson, the Blue Tigresses are preparing to make a strong impression in these friendlies, with a mix of experienced players and fresh talent.
The 23-member squad selected for the friendlies includes seasoned campaigners such as Sangita Basfore, Grace Dangmei, and Pyari Xaxa, though captain Ashalata Devi will not be part of the lineup. The squad aims to build on their previous performances and improve ahead of future competitions.
India’s Squad for the Friendlies:
Goalkeepers: Hempriya Seram, Maibam Linthoingambi Devi, Nandini

These friendlies will be crucial for India to assess their strengths and weaknesses, as they aim for greater success in upcoming regional and international tournaments.
