Madan Mohan Malaviya: A Visionary Leader and Educator
Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861–1946) was a distinguished Indian scholar, educator, and prominent leader in the Indian independence movement. Born on December 25, 1861, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), he was the son of Pandit Brij Nath, a renowned Sanskrit scholar. Malaviya excelled in Sanskrit literature and philosophy, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Muir Central College in Allahabad.
Educational Contributions
A staunch advocate for education, Malaviya founded the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi in 1916, aiming to provide quality education to all, irrespective of caste or creed. He served as the university’s vice-chancellor from 1919 to 1938, overseeing its growth into one of the largest residential universities in Asia.
Political Involvement
Malaviya was deeply involved in the Indian independence movement and served as the president of the Indian National Congress three times. He was a moderate leader who emphasized Hindu unity and worked towards social reforms. In 1906, he founded the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, aiming to promote Hindu interests and culture.
Legacy
Malaviya’s dedication to education and social reform earned him the title “Mahamana” (Great Soul) from Rabindranath Tagore. His unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress and his efforts in promoting education continue to inspire generations. In recognition of his contributions, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2015.

On December 25, 2024, the 163rd birth anniversary of Madan Mohan Malaviya was celebrated with cultural fervor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The celebrations began with a Rudrabhishek ceremony at the Vishwanath Temple, followed by havan, purnahuti, and distribution of offerings. Students participated in a slogan competition, university staff engaged in folk and group singing, and local school students took part in a painting competition.
