New Delhi [India], December 28: Neeraj Chopra, hailed as India’s ‘Golden Boy,’ solidified his place as one of the nation’s greatest athletes with a remarkable performance in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Although he narrowly missed retaining his gold medal, Chopra’s impressive journey to a silver finish cemented his status as an icon of Indian sports.

In the Paris 2024 Olympics, Chopra made history by becoming the second male athlete from post-independence India to secure two Olympic medals in an individual event. His stellar performance saw him clinch a silver medal with a throw of 89.45 meters. Despite a strong second attempt, Chopra faced a tough challenge with four consecutive fouls, preventing him from securing a repeat gold.

Chopra’s journey at the Olympics was filled with highs and lows. While his first and third attempts were invalidated due to red flags, and his final three attempts ended in fouls, the athlete’s qualification round performance was impressive. With a throw of 89.34 meters, he stood out, but his best throw of 89.45 meters ultimately wasn’t enough to retain his Tokyo 2020 gold. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem stole the spotlight with a 92.97-meter throw, setting a new Olympic record and surpassing the previous mark held by Denmark’s Andreas Thorkildsen from the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Grenada’s Anderson Peters secured the bronze with a throw of 88.54 meters.

Chopra’s year continued with near victories, such as his narrow second-place finish in the Diamond League final. With a throw of 87.86 meters at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium, Chopra was just 1 centimeter shy of victory. His first attempt was a solid 86.82 meters, placing him second behind Peters, whose opening-round throw secured him the lead. Chopra’s subsequent attempts of 83.49 meters, 83.30 meters, and 86.46 meters kept him in the race, but he couldn’t surpass Peters. This marked Chopra’s fifth appearance in the Diamond League final. His previous performances in 2017 and 2018 saw him finishing seventh and fourth, respectively, while in 2022, he claimed the Diamond League title with a throw of 88.44 meters.

Chopra’s remarkable consistency throughout the year earned him 14 points across two Diamond League meets. This secured his qualification for the final, where seven athletes competed for the top spot. His second-place finish in the 2024 Diamond League followed similar success in Doha and Lausanne earlier in the year.

In 2022, Chopra made waves by setting a national record with a throw of 89.94 meters in Stockholm, and in November 2024, his throw of 89.45 meters in Paris added to his impressive career tally.

Earlier in 2024, a significant change took place in Chopra’s career. His long-time coach, Klaus Bartonietz, decided to retire after years of guiding Chopra to success. Under Bartonietz’s mentorship, Chopra achieved remarkable milestones, including two Olympic medals, two World Championship medals, and an Asian Games gold. The 75-year-old German coach’s departure marked the end of an era for Chopra, who now embarks on a new chapter with legendary javelin thrower Jan Zelezny.

Zelezny, a three-time Olympic champion and current world record holder, will now coach Chopra. With five of the top ten best throws in javelin history and a world record of 98.48 meters set in 1996, Zelezny’s arrival is expected to propel Chopra to even greater heights. Zelezny’s legacy as an athlete who redefined javelin throwing will undoubtedly influence Chopra’s journey, as the young Indian athlete looks forward to more success on the world stage.

Neeraj Chopra’s 2024 was a year of both triumph and challenge, yet it undeniably cemented his status as one of India’s greatest sports figures. With his new coaching partnership, Chopra’s future in athletics looks promising as he continues to inspire the nation.
