On Thursday, October 24, 2024, the Union government formally announced Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India, effective November 11.
A notification from the Department of Justice stated, “Pursuant to the authority granted by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, a Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, effective November 11, 2024.”
Justice Khanna will serve as Chief Justice of India for just over six months, concluding his term on May 13, 2025.
