Tom Cruise Honored with US Navy’s Highest Civilian Award
Washington, D.C. – December 18, 2024 – Hollywood icon Tom Cruise has been honored with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award, the highest civilian recognition that can be awarded by the U.S. Navy. The prestigious award was presented to Cruise by Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro during a ceremony at the Longcross Film Studios in Chertsey, Surrey, England.
Cruise’s connection to the Navy began with his iconic role in the 1986 film Top Gun, which depicted the life of naval aviators. His continued contributions to the Navy’s image were highlighted through his role as both director and producer of the 2022 hit Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel, which resonated with both older audiences and younger viewers, revitalized interest in the Navy’s skills and opportunities, earning Cruise the title of the U.S. Navy’s 36th Honorary Naval Aviator.
In his acceptance speech, Cruise shared his personal philosophy: “To lead is to serve. And I know that to my core.” He expressed deep gratitude to the Navy and praised the servicemen and women who inspire him. “I’m happy I have been able to be a source of inspiration to many of the sailors who serve today or have served in the past,” he said, emphasizing that the success of the films was a collective effort by the cast and crew.
Secretary Del Toro acknowledged Cruise’s decades of dedication to promoting naval service through his films, adding, “His work has inspired generations to serve in our Navy and Marine Corps.” Cruise’s portrayal of naval aviators, particularly in Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, played a significant role in fostering admiration and respect for the Navy’s work.
Cruise is not the first Hollywood star to receive this prestigious award. Directors Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks were similarly honored for their contributions to Saving Private Ryan, the 1998 World War II drama.
As Cruise continues to work on projects that highlight the military’s role in society, reports suggest he is already developing Top Gun 3, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirming the film’s progress earlier this year. Cruise will also appear in the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible series, The Final Reckoning, set for release on May 23, 2025.
