At the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 held in Davos, India emerged as a powerhouse of investment potential, securing commitments worth more than Rs 20 lakh crore. This unprecedented achievement is a testament to India’s growing economic strength and its ability to navigate global uncertainties, presenting a promising future for the nation.

Maharashtra led the charge, capturing nearly 80% of the total investment pledges. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the state signed 61 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 15.7 lakh crore. These investments have the potential to generate more than 16 lakh jobs, further boosting Maharashtra’s economic landscape. Other states, including Telangana, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh, also made impressive strides at the event, securing significant investment commitments to fuel their development.

Telangana, represented by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, secured 20 MoUs valued at Rs 1.8 lakh crore. Kerala and Uttar Pradesh showcased ambitious growth plans, attracting attention and investments from global entities looking to tap into India’s diverse markets.

In a notable move, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu engaged in productive dialogues with CEOs and top executives from global corporations. These discussions focused on highlighting the state’s investment potential, signaling Andhra Pradesh’s readiness to welcome foreign investments across various sectors.

One of the most significant announcements from the summit came from IT giant Infosys, which revealed plans to expand its presence in Hyderabad, creating 17,000 new jobs in the process. This move reflects the growing attractiveness of India as a hub for IT and tech-driven opportunities.

Union Railways and Electronics and IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, also took center stage during the summit, outlining India’s strategic approach to balanced economic growth. Vaishnaw highlighted that India is not only focusing on services but is also ramping up manufacturing. He emphasized the shift from an import substitution model to a more forward-looking “Make in India, Make for the World” approach, positioning India as a critical player in the global supply chain.

Vaishnaw’s address underscored India’s rapid rise in the semiconductor and AI sectors. He pointed out that industry leaders now consider India as a potential top-three destination for semiconductor manufacturing. India’s growing dominance in Global Capability Centers (GCCs) focused on advanced designs was also highlighted, showcasing the country’s emerging role in global manufacturing.

In the AI space, Vaishnaw pointed out that India is positioning itself as the “use case capital” of the world. As AI models become more commoditized, the focus is shifting toward developing specific applications and solutions that cater to diverse industries globally. This presents India with a unique opportunity to lead innovation in this transformative field.

Furthermore, the Indian government’s emphasis on skilling and preparing its workforce for emerging technologies, especially AI, ensures that the country remains at the forefront of global technological advancements. By fostering a skilled labor force, India is laying the foundation for sustained growth in the future.

With its commitment to enhancing infrastructure, fostering technological innovation, and expanding its industrial capacity, India is poised to solidify its place as a global economic leader. The investments secured at WEF 2025 are just the beginning of a new chapter in India’s economic transformation, promising unprecedented growth, job creation, and global recognition in the years to come.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is set to host the inaugural edition of the ‘Technology Dialogue’ from January 24-25 in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in India’s growing role in global technology diplomacy. This event, held in collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), will focus on establishing robust partnerships in critical and emerging technology sectors.

As the first-ever Track 1.5 Dialogue centered on technology policy and international partnerships, the ‘Technology Dialogue’ aims to foster deeper collaboration on a range of vital topics. The theme for this year’s dialogue is “Exploring New Frontiers in Technology Diplomacy.” Over the two-day event, policymakers, industry leaders, scientists, and scholars will convene to discuss India’s role in shaping the future of global technology. Key areas of focus include quantum advancements, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, space exploration, and bioeconomy.

This dialogue comes at a time when technology and innovation are playing an increasingly central role in shaping international relations. The event will build on the momentum seen at global leadership-level summits such as the G20, GPAI, and iCET, where the importance of technology has dominated the agendas of major international forums and bilateral engagements.

By bringing together experts and stakeholders from across the world, the Technology Dialogue aims to create synergies that can drive both global progress and socio-technological advancements. It serves as a unique platform to discuss the critical role that technology plays in shaping global economic and social landscapes, while also showcasing India’s thriving tech and science ecosystem.

The inaugural session, set for January 24, will address “India’s International Technology Engagement Framework.” Esteemed dignitaries including Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology; Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India; Dr. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon; Prof. G. W. Diector of IISc Bengaluru; and Prof. G.K. Ananthasuresh, Professor and Dean of the Division of Mechanical Sciences at IISc, will share their insights on India’s technology diplomacy and future global collaborations.

This groundbreaking event is expected to lay the foundation for future technology-driven partnerships, further solidifying India’s position as a key player in the global tech arena.

London, January 16, 2025 (ANI) – India has been recognized as one of the world’s most prepared job markets for the future, according to the inaugural QS World Future Skills Index. The comprehensive report highlights India’s readiness to recruit talent in rapidly evolving sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, and green technologies.

The QS World Future Skills Index, produced by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluates countries based on four key criteria: Skills Fit, Academic Readiness, Future of Work, and Economic Transformation. These indicators assess how well countries are positioned to meet the changing demands of the global workforce. India ranks 25th overall in the index, emerging as a “Future Skills Contender,” and notably excels in the Future of Work category, securing the second-highest score globally (99.1), just behind the United States.

India’s Strengths: A Dynamic and Resilient Job Market

India’s impressive score in the Future of Work indicator reflects its job market’s readiness to recruit talent equipped with the skills needed for the future. The country’s ability to attract venture capital funding, even amidst global downturns, signals a robust and resilient investment ecosystem. Furthermore, India is set apart from many other nations by its rapid integration of AI into its workforce, positioning it well for the future job market.

The report specifically identifies India as one of the countries “most ready to recruit into digital roles,” along with Mexico. This suggests that India’s job market is prepared to meet the growing demand for digital expertise in sectors ranging from software development to data science and machine learning.

Areas for Improvement: Education and Industry Collaboration

Despite these strengths, the report highlights areas where India’s education system, industry collaboration, and employment markets need further development. While Indian universities perform well in international rankings, there remains a significant gap in equipping graduates with the in-demand digital, AI, and green skills that employers increasingly seek.

To address these gaps, the QS World Future Skills Index makes several recommendations for India’s higher education system:

Increase Tertiary Education Supply: India needs to leverage its large, youthful population by expanding access to higher education, particularly in fields that will drive long-term economic growth. More routes into tertiary education are crucial to avoiding potential skills shortages.

Modularised Learning: Adopting modular learning approaches that lower barriers to entry can help increase the supply of graduates with skills aligned to industry demands, particularly in high-growth sectors such as AI, green technologies, and digital roles.

Foster Entrepreneurial and Innovative Mindsets: Indian universities should prioritize integrating creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking into their curricula. Strengthening partnerships with industry will help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world business needs.

Focus on Green Skills and Sustainability: Embedding sustainability and green skills into academic programs is crucial, as India faces a growing demand for talent in sectors like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Progress is being made, with 21 of India’s 78 universities featured in the 2025 QS Sustainability Rankings, but there remains room for improvement in green skills development.

Bridge Investment and Innovation Gaps: The report underscores the need for greater investment in research and development (R&D) to drive innovation and economic transformation. India’s R&D spending, at just 0.6% of GDP, is significantly lower than leading nations such as the U.S. (3.5%) and the UK (2.9%).

Strengthen Industry-Academia Collaboration: India’s higher education sector must work more closely with industry to ensure that academic curricula evolve in line with fast-changing business requirements. Strengthening this collaboration will help improve Skills Fit and ensure that graduates are better prepared for the demands of the future job market.

India’s Bright Economic Future

Despite these challenges, India’s economic trajectory remains promising. The country is expected to experience an average annual GDP growth of 6.5% between 2025 and 2030, outpacing many global competitors. This growth is largely driven by India’s youthful population, burgeoning start-up culture, and dynamic economy.

Matteo Quacquarelli, Vice President of Strategy and Analytics at QS, emphasizes that India’s young demographic offers the nation a unique opportunity for continued growth. He points out that while many countries face demographic challenges due to aging populations, India’s youthful workforce presents an advantage in the race for future talent.

The Road Ahead

The QS analysis also provides strategic recommendations for higher education institutions in India. Among these are the establishment of lifelong learning pathways, the implementation of modularized learning to enhance skill alignment with industry needs, and the fostering of international research partnerships. These initiatives could play a critical role in closing the gaps in emerging technologies such as AI and green innovation.

As the world transitions into a future driven by AI, digitalization, and sustainability, India’s educational institutions, industries, and policymakers must work together to ensure that the country remains at the forefront of this transformation. By addressing the gaps in education, innovation, and industry collaboration, India can continue to build a workforce capable of meeting the demands of the global job market in the years ahead.

In conclusion, India’s strong performance in the QS World Future Skills Index signals that the country is on the right path to becoming a global leader in preparing talent for the jobs of the future. However, continued investment in education, innovation, and sustainability is essential for realizing its full potential. As India positions itself to take advantage of the opportunities presented by its youthful population and economic growth, the country must remain agile and proactive in addressing the evolving needs of the global workforce.

New Delhi, January 14: In a bid to celebrate National Startup Day 2025, the Startup Policy Forum (SPF), with support from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and Startup India, is launching two flagship initiatives – ‘Startup Baithak’ and ‘Startup Baatcheet.’ The two-day event, set to take place at Bharat Mandapam on January 15-16, 2025, will emphasize India’s dynamic and transformative startup ecosystem while addressing critical policy issues, including Data Privacy, Reverse Flipping, AI Governance, Capital Market, and Fintech Regulations.

This event aims to foster collaboration among various stakeholders and steer the future growth of India’s innovation landscape, as highlighted in the official release. The goal is to offer a platform for dialogue that will help shape the trajectory of India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem.

Startup Baithak is designed as a series of 12 exclusive, closed-door roundtable sessions that will be held over the two-day period. These discussions will bring together leading startups such as Swiggy, Zerodha, Razorpay, CRED, Pine Labs, Groww, OYO, Practo, Dream11, MPL, CarDekho, Acko, Ixigo, MobiKwik, One Card, ProgCap, Digantara, BharatPe, Physics Wallah, and Jupiter, among others. The primary objective of these sessions is to bridge the gap between India’s next-generation innovators and policymakers, fostering a mutual understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the startup ecosystem.

The event will be hosted in the prestigious G20 Summit Room at Bharat Mandapam, where participants will engage in discussions to address emerging challenges, explore innovative solutions, and align strategies to accelerate the growth of India’s startup sector.

Sanjiv, Joint Secretary of Startup India-DPIIT, expressed his thoughts on the occasion, saying, “India’s startup ecosystem is a driving force of innovation and economic growth, and National Startup Day serves as a recognition of the entrepreneurial spirit that shapes our nation’s future. With initiatives like ‘Startup Baithak’ and ‘Startup Baatcheet,’ we aim to create meaningful dialogues between startups, policymakers, and investors, enabling the development of solutions for today’s challenges. We are committed to empowering startups to scale globally and contribute to India’s position as a global innovation hub.”

Shweta Rajpal Kohli, President and CEO of SPF, added, “India’s startup ecosystem is not only thriving—it’s leading the way in redefining global innovation. Through ‘Startup Baithak’ and ‘Startup Baatcheet,’ we’re not just marking National Startup Day; we are shaping the future dialogue and vision for India’s startup sector in 2025 and beyond. As we celebrate this special day, our aim is to inspire, connect, and empower the next generation of changemakers to make a lasting impact, in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India’s startup ecosystem.”

In addition to the roundtable sessions, SPF will also host Startup Baatcheet on January 15, 2025—an informal networking evening. This gathering will bring together founders, investors, ecosystem enablers, policymakers, and lawmakers to discuss the startup outlook for 2025. It will serve as a platform to strengthen ties within the entrepreneurial ecosystem and create a conducive environment for collaboration and growth.

The National Startup Day 2025 celebrations are set to be a landmark occasion, marking a significant step in furthering India’s global standing as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship.

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, a new report highlighted a significant shift in how global industries are evolving with the help of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins. By 2027, approximately sixty percent of global manufacturers are expected to incorporate generative AI into their operations. This move will help speed up the acquisition of expertise, especially in industries facing a growing shortage of skilled labor.

The core idea behind this integration of AI is to preserve the expertise of retiring employees and pass it on to the new generation, ensuring that valuable knowledge is not lost. When combined with digital twins — virtual representations of physical assets or processes — the impact of AI becomes even more powerful. This union enables a range of advancements from enhanced performance monitoring and optimization to creating realistic simulations and generating precise predictions. Together, AI and digital twins have the potential to revolutionize industries by improving operational efficiency and fostering smarter decision-making.

One clear example of this transformation can be seen in the IT sector. Historically, one IT administrator might have serviced around 1,000 tickets. However, thanks to digitalization, the same administrator can now handle up to 100,000 tickets. Importantly, this shift doesn’t eliminate IT jobs but rather increases productivity, demonstrating that digital tools can augment human capacity rather than replace it.

This pattern is expected to repeat across multiple industries as digital technologies become more widely adopted. According to WEF, when these technologies are combined with sector-specific knowledge, they can unlock vast new possibilities, making cutting-edge solutions more accessible and addressing crucial challenges such as equitable growth and sustainability. The ability to scale such technologies holds the potential to not only improve productivity but also to help tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues.

AI’s strength lies in its capacity to turn raw data into actionable insights. When paired with digital twins, AI enables the collection, analysis, and optimization of data to eliminate inefficiencies and make smarter decisions. For example, in highly automated manufacturing environments, machines generate vast amounts of data—equivalent to half a million movies every month. Historically, much of this data has gone underutilized, but with the introduction of AI, manufacturers are able to unlock valuable insights. AI helps to identify patterns, spot inefficiencies, predict outcomes, and facilitate better decision-making. In fact, in quality control, the integration of AI and digital twins has reduced efforts by 95%.

While the use of AI and digital twins is particularly transformative in manufacturing, the potential of these technologies extends far beyond factories. In healthcare, AI can assist in interpreting complex medical images, such as MRI scans and X-rays, improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. In agriculture, robots equipped with AI can help identify ripe fruits for harvesting, streamlining processes in the field. In the building sector, AI can be used to analyze data from building materials and designs to enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions.

To unlock the full potential of these technologies and address the global productivity gap, the key lies in developing a comprehensive digital strategy. By adopting technologies like AI and digital twins across industries, we can drive sustainable growth, foster innovation, and improve efficiency. As WEF emphasizes, how we embrace and implement these tools today will lay the foundation for future generations, creating a landscape where technology not only boosts productivity but also tackles critical global challenges such as sustainability and equitable development.

Geneva, Switzerland, 8 January: According to the latest report from the World Economic Forum (WEF), significant disruptions in the job market will lead to 22% of jobs being affected by 2030. The report, titled Future of Jobs Report 2025, reveals that while 170 million new jobs will be created, 92 million jobs will be displaced, resulting in a net increase of 78 million job opportunities by 2030.

Drawing on data from over 1000 companies, the WEF report emphasizes that the most pressing challenge businesses face in this transformation is a widening skills gap. Nearly 40% of the skills needed for the evolving workforce will require change, and 63% of employers cite a lack of the right skillset as the primary barrier to progress.

The report also warns that by 2030, 59 out of every 100 workers in the global workforce will need to undergo reskilling or upskilling, with 11 of these workers likely to miss out on necessary training. This leaves more than 120 million workers vulnerable to medium-term job redundancy, emphasizing the need for urgent action to address this skills mismatch.

In terms of job demand, the WEF highlights that technology skills, particularly in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data, and cybersecurity, will experience rapid growth. At the same time, human-centric skills such as creative thinking, resilience, flexibility, and agility will remain essential. The report stresses that those who can combine both technical and human skills will be increasingly valuable in a fast-changing job market.

One of the key findings from the report is the expected growth in frontline roles in sectors like care and education. Jobs in nursing, secondary school teaching, and agriculture are projected to see the highest increases in demand by 2030. These roles, alongside others in delivery services and construction, will be vital as demographic trends continue to drive demand in these critical sectors.

On the flip side, the report highlights that positions such as cashiers, administrative assistants, and even graphic designers will face significant declines due to the disruptive impact of generative AI. As automation increasingly takes over certain tasks, the WEF warns that sectors involving routine tasks will be hit hardest.

While the rise of AI and technological advancements in fields like renewable energy are creating new job opportunities, they are also pushing businesses to reorient their operations. The report notes that half of employers globally are looking to shift their business models to capitalize on emerging opportunities. Notably, 77% of employers plan to upskill their workers, but 41% also foresee a reduction in workforce size due to automation.

To tackle these challenges, the WEF calls for urgent collective action from governments, businesses, and educational institutions to address the widening skills gap. The focus should be on investing in reskilling and upskilling initiatives to help workers transition into the fast-growing jobs of the future.

Looking ahead, the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting, scheduled for 20-24 January in Davos-Klosters, will convene global leaders under the theme “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.” The event will explore strategies to bridge the skills gap and ensure a resilient and inclusive global workforce.

The WEF’s report serves as a wake-up call for the urgent need to build a workforce that is prepared for the future, ensuring that both businesses and workers can thrive in an ever-evolving labor market.

New Delhi, December 27: India’s telecom industry, which has amassed a remarkable 1.2 billion subscribers, is now diving into the realms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and pushing the envelope on 6G technology. The sector, which has experienced unprecedented growth, saw its average monthly wireless data usage reach 21.30 GB per user by October 2024.

According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the deployment of more than 460,000 5G BTS sites has significantly boosted 5G adoption, with user numbers surpassing 125 million. Projections suggest that by 2026, this figure will soar to 350 million. The Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology, a major use case for 5G, has also seen rapid expansion, with nearly 3 million connections established in just one year.

As a critical contributor to India’s GDP and employing over 4 million people, the telecom sector is now focusing on AI and 6G. In fact, more than 55% of technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) companies in India have fully integrated AI into their operations, with an additional 37% scaling up their AI initiatives, as reported by KPMG India.

The government’s Bharat 6G Vision initiative aims to secure 10% of the global 6G patents and is actively supporting research and development. This includes funding for advanced testbeds and assessing proposals to accelerate the development of the 6G ecosystem.

Despite these advancements, the telecom industry faces several challenges. One of the major concerns is the burden of Large Traffic Generators (LTGs), which have forced Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to invest Rs 10,000 crore in 2023. The lack of contributions from LTGs has also led to a loss of Rs 800 crore in AGR dues and taxes for the Indian government.

Additionally, COAI has raised concerns over unregulated over-the-top (OTT) communication platforms. The association argues that these platforms create an uneven playing field, as TSPs must comply with stringent security regulations. COAI advocates for the implementation of traceability and privacy rules for OTT services to ensure fair competition and security.

The allocation of the 6 GHz spectrum band, vital for 5G, remains a critical need, and COAI has called for immediate allocation to mobile networks. The rise of unauthorized Wi-Fi 6E routers sold online also poses a challenge that needs to be addressed. Moreover, issues such as infrastructure constraints, Right of Way (RoW) challenges, and spectrum interference are hindering the speed of network rollouts, with the newly proposed Quality of Service (QoS) norms considered impractical by TSPs.

To further streamline the sector, COAI is urging the extension of Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) regulations to OTT services to tackle the persistent issue of spam calls and messages.

Despite these hurdles, government initiatives such as the elimination of the Wireless Operating License (WOL) and the waiver of bank guarantee requirements for deferred spectrum payments have provided significant financial relief. Additionally, the Supreme Court’s ruling on tax credits for telecom tower components has further eased the sector’s financial burdens.

As India’s telecom sector continues to evolve and embrace new technologies, the path forward will require a careful balance of innovation, regulation, and collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders.
