<p>The Government of India’s Department of Consumer Affairs has launched an AI-enabled National Consumer Helpline (NCH) system, which has significantly improved the grievance redressal process for consumers. This advanced system has led to a surge in consumer confidence, as evidenced by the remarkable increase in the number of calls received—from 12,553 in December 2015 to an impressive 1,55,138 in December 2024. This reflects a more than tenfold rise, according to a press release from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food &amp; Public Distribution.</p>



<p>Additionally, the monthly number of complaints registered has risen sharply, increasing from 37,062 in 2017 to 1,12,468 in 2024. Digital complaints have also experienced significant growth, with the monthly average climbing from 54,893 in FY 2023-24 to 68,831 in FY 2024-25 by December 2024. These developments highlight the effectiveness of the AI system, which provides sector-wise analysis to address grievances in a more organized and efficient manner.</p>



<p>A key milestone for the NCH has been the onboarding of 1,038 companies as ‘convergence partners,’ up from just 263 in 2017. These companies, particularly those with the highest number of unresolved grievances, now prioritize consumer satisfaction through improved grievance resolution. As a result, grievance disposal time has decreased to 48 days in 2024, a notable improvement from 66.26 days in 2023.</p>



<p>Sectors like education, e-commerce, and consumer durables have especially benefitted from faster resolution times, further boosting consumer trust in the system. The NCH continues to support consumers through its toll-free number (1915) and online portal, ensuring their rights are safeguarded with timely interventions—without the need for legal action.</p>

<p><strong>Parkville, February 6, 2025:</strong> Researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) have conducted one of the largest eye studies globally, uncovering significant insights into retinal thickness and its potential to detect diseases like type 2 diabetes, dementia, and multiple sclerosis at an early stage.</p>



<p>By using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the study analyzed over 50,000 eyes, creating detailed retinal maps with unprecedented precision. These maps offer new perspectives on how variations in retinal thickness correlate with a range of diseases, including neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders.</p>



<p>The retina, part of the central nervous system alongside the brain and spinal cord, is crucial to understanding conditions such as dementia and diabetes. This innovative study highlights how changes in the retina&#8217;s thickness could serve as a diagnostic tool for early detection of these diseases.</p>

Jahed likens it to &#8220;listening to a conversation through a wall—you can detect that communication is happening, but you miss the specific details.&#8221; In contrast, intracellular signals offer rich details but are typically captured through invasive, more technically demanding methods. By using AI, the team was able to correlate these two sets of signals and reconstruct the intracellular activity with remarkable accuracy.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Step-By-Step Look at the Research</h3>



<p>To develop this cutting-edge method, the researchers engineered an array of nanoscale, needle-shaped electrodes made from silica coated with platinum. These electrodes, each about 200 times smaller than a single heart muscle cell, were used to capture electrical signals from heart cells grown from stem cells. The heart muscle cells were placed on the electrode array, and a vast dataset was generated by recording thousands of pairs of extracellular and intracellular signals. The dataset also included responses of the cells to various drugs, providing valuable insights into cellular behavior under different conditions.</p>



<p>By analyzing these signal pairs, the team identified patterns and relationships between the extracellular and intracellular signals. This dataset became the foundation for training a deep learning AI model capable of predicting intracellular signals based solely on the extracellular data. The model demonstrated high precision in reconstructing the internal electrical activity of the heart cells, even in complex drug exposure scenarios.</p>

<p>One of the most significant implications of this new AI-driven technique is its potential to accelerate drug development, particularly in the field of cardiotoxicity testing. Part of this testing involves evaluating intracellular electrical signals from heart muscle cells, as even subtle changes in these signals can indicate potential harmful effects.</p>



<p>Currently, cardiotoxicity testing is a costly and time-consuming process, often requiring animal models, which don&#8217;t always predict human responses accurately. With this new method, researchers can conduct drug screening directly on human heart cells, providing a more accurate and relevant picture of how a drug might affect the heart. This not only has the potential to reduce the need for animal testing but also to streamline the drug development process, cutting both time and costs.</p>



<p>&#8220;This could dramatically reduce the time and cost of drug development,&#8221; said Jahed. &#8220;And because the cells used in these tests are derived from human stem cells, it also opens the door to personalized medicine. Drugs could be screened on patient-specific cells to predict how an individual might respond to these treatments.&#8221;</p>

<p>Although the current study focuses on heart muscle cells, the team is already working to expand this AI-driven method to other types of cells, such as neurons. <p>The race to dominate artificial intelligence (AI) is entering a new phase in 2025, with competition among foundation model developers driving innovation in features and usability rather than just scaling data and computational power. Major AI research labs are reaching comparable performance levels, with industry leaders pushing boundaries to deliver better, user-friendly products tailored to diverse use cases.</p>



<p>Performance benchmarks of leading foundation models have converged in terms of accuracy and task diversity. Open-source models have added to the competitive pressure by offering affordable and flexible alternatives to proprietary systems. These innovations aim to integrate seamlessly into workflows, accelerating adoption across industries such as finance, media, and automotive.</p>



<p>However, the exponential scaling of AI models is hitting diminishing returns. High-quality datasets are becoming scarce, and additional computational resources yield smaller performance gains. <p>New Delhi, January 10: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is actively looking into the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to speed up the approval process for Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and Mutual Funds (MFs) applications. SEBI chairperson, Madhabi Puri Buch, revealed this initiative during her address at the inaugural session of the SEBI Samvad symposium.</p>



<p>Buch shared that a significant number of AI-driven projects are already underway within SEBI. A primary application of AI will be to streamline the processing of IPO and MF applications, which will enable faster approvals. &#8220;One of the key utilizations of AI that we are deploying is to do faster processing of all applications so that we can turn this around even faster,&#8221; Buch stated.</p>



<p>She also pointed out that as of November 2024, only two IPO applications had been pending approval for more than six months, a major improvement from the eight IPO applications still waiting for approval in March 2022. Similarly, for Mutual Funds, only one application was awaiting approval for over six months by November 2024, down from a staggering 69 in March 2022.</p>



<p>Buch emphasized that the introduction of AI technology will further enhance the efficiency of the approval process for IPOs and MFs. She also highlighted the thriving Indian IPO market, noting the substantial volume of applications coming in every week. &#8220;In the last nine months, we’ve seen equity raise approximately 3.3 lakh crores. We expect to reach around 4.3 lakh crores by the end of the year,&#8221; she added.</p>



<p>While capital raising through equity has witnessed a steady increase in recent years, Buch acknowledged that certain issues, such as preference and rights issues, occasionally go unnoticed in the primary market. To address this, SEBI has introduced measures like the Fastrack rights issue, followed by a preferential issue.</p>



<p>The SEBI chairperson also spoke about the importance of a Rs 250 systematic investment plan (SIP) for mutual funds to promote financial inclusion. &#8220;Just as capital formation is vital for economic growth, inclusion is equally important. Hence, the proposed Rs 250 SIP is essential to enhance financial inclusion,&#8221; she explained. Buch urged Challa Sreenivasalu, chairperson of the State Bank of India, to help popularize the micro-SIP initiative within the bank’s mutual fund business.</p>



<p>The Rs 250 SIP initiative is set to be launched soon, although the official date has not yet been confirmed.</p>



<p>Furthermore, Buch discussed the growth potential of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), and municipal bonds, forecasting significant expansion for these investment vehicles over the next decade.</p>



<p>Finally, she remarked on the increasing weight of India in the MSCI Index, which has led to a proportionate share of global passive funds flowing into Indian equity markets. As a result, Indian equities now attract about 20% of global passive fund inflows, part of the broader emerging market index.</p>



<p>This move to enhance the efficiency and inclusiveness of India’s capital markets reflects SEBI’s commitment to fostering growth and financial inclusion while leveraging modern technological tools like AI.</p>

<p>December 26, England – Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing environmental science by offering valuable insights into the complex interactions between chemicals in rivers and their effects on aquatic life. A pioneering study conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham has shown how advanced AI methodologies can help identify hazardous chemical mixtures in water, providing a crucial tool for environmental protection.</p>



<p>In collaboration with the Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) in China and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Germany, the research team analyzed water samples from the Chaobai River system near Beijing. This river, which is exposed to pollutants from various sources—agricultural, domestic, and industrial—provided the perfect setting for studying the impacts of chemical contamination on ecosystems.</p>



<p>Professor John Colbourne, Director of the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Environmental Research and Justice, and a senior author of the paper, expressed optimism about the potential for AI to assist in identifying undetected toxic substances in the water. &#8220;There is a vast array of chemicals in the environment. Water safety cannot be assessed one substance at a time,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Now we have the means to monitor the totality of chemicals in sampled water from the environment to uncover what unknown substances act together to produce toxicity to animals, including humans.&#8221;</p>



<p>The study, published in <em>Environmental Science and Technology</em>, demonstrates that certain chemical mixtures, when combined, can have more severe impacts on aquatic life than individual chemicals alone. By analyzing the effects on the genes of water fleas (Daphnia)—tiny crustaceans that are highly sensitive to changes in water quality—the team was able to uncover hidden environmental risks. These results suggest that the mixtures of chemicals present in the environment pose a greater threat to biological processes than previously understood.</p>



<p>Daphnia were chosen as the test organisms because of their ability to serve as reliable indicators of water quality. They share many genes with other species, making them a valuable tool for assessing potential hazards to aquatic organisms. &#8220;Our innovative approach leverages Daphnia as the sentinel species to uncover potential toxic substances in the environment,&#8221; explained Dr. Xiaojing Li, lead author of the study and a researcher at the University of Birmingham. &#8220;By using AI methods, we can identify which subsets of chemicals might be particularly harmful to aquatic life, even at low concentrations that wouldn&#8217;t normally raise concerns.&#8221;</p>



<p>Dr. Jiarui Zhou, co-first author and the developer of the AI algorithms, emphasized the power of computational techniques in addressing environmental issues. &#8220;Our approach demonstrates how advanced computational methods can help solve pressing environmental challenges. By analyzing vast amounts of biological and chemical data simultaneously, we can better understand and predict environmental risks,&#8221; he said.</p>



<p>The study also challenges traditional approaches in environmental toxicology. &#8220;The key innovation of this study lies in our data-driven, unbiased approach to uncovering how environmentally relevant concentrations of chemical mixtures can cause harm,&#8221; said Professor Luisa Orsini, another senior author of the study. &#8220;This challenges conventional ecotoxicology and paves the way to regulatory adoption of Daphnia as a sentinel species, along with new methodologies.&#8221;</p>



<p>Dr. Timothy Williams, another co-author of the study, added that the research breaks new ground by revealing the effects of low concentrations of chemicals within environmental mixtures. &#8220;Typically, aquatic toxicology studies either use high concentrations of individual chemicals to observe detailed biological responses or focus on end results like mortality or altered reproduction after exposure to a sample,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;This study allows us to identify key classes of chemicals affecting organisms in genuine environmental mixtures at low concentrations while simultaneously characterizing biomolecular changes.&#8221;</p>



<p>This study opens new avenues for better understanding and mitigating the environmental impacts of chemical pollution. By leveraging AI and the sensitivity of Daphnia, scientists are now equipped to uncover hidden threats in water systems, ultimately helping safeguard aquatic ecosystems and public health.</p>
