Vishnu’s journey to success in blind football is an inspiring one. Hailing from North Gujarat, he began his sports career in cricket, representing Gujarat as vice-captain of the state’s blind cricket team in 2016-17. However, his passion for football was ignited in 2017 when he discovered blind football and was drawn to the immense physical and mental challenges it posed. By 2019, Vishnu had made his international debut, a move that marked the beginning of a new chapter in his sporting career.

“I play as a striker for Gujarat and defend for the Indian team,” Vishnu explained, reflecting on his dual role on the field. “My passion for the game continues to grow, and the support from the Blind People’s Association in Ahmedabad has been crucial in my journey.”

The Indian team’s journey in the BRICS Blind Football Tournament was a testament to their hard work and determination. They began the tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over Turkey, thanks to Tushar Kumar’s decisive goal. India’s momentum continued with a dominant 3-0 win over Belarus, with goals from Tushar, Mohd Sabir, and Pradeep. Their final group-stage match against hosts Russia ended in a 0-0 draw, but it was enough for India to top their group with 7 points, securing a spot in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, India faced the formidable Brazil. Despite the challenge, the Indian team held their ground, forcing a 0-0 draw and pushing the game into a penalty shootout. Vishnu, known for his composure under pressure, stepped up and converted a crucial penalty. However, India narrowly lost the shootout 1-2, falling just short of a historic final appearance.

“This was my best performance in any tournament so far,” Vishnu said after the match. “Taking Brazil to penalties was a huge achievement. It showed the world the strength of India’s blind football team and our growing presence in the sport.”

The tournament itself presented unique challenges for players, particularly in noisy environments. Matches were played indoors in Moscow, where the echo and the sounds from the crowd and players made it difficult to judge the ball. However, Vishnu and his teammates adapted quickly, focusing on their training and executing their coach’s strategies to perfection.

Looking ahead, Vishnu is focused on nurturing the next generation of blind football talent. “I am coaching at the Blind People’s Association in Gujarat,” he shared. “My goal is to develop good players and contribute to the growth of blind football in India.”
