New Delhi [India], January 8: IndiaAI, an independent business division under the Digital India Corporation, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with tech giant Microsoft to propel the adoption and development of artificial intelligence (AI) in India. This collaboration is a significant step toward realizing the goals of the India AI Mission.

The announcement follows Microsoft’s recent commitment to invest USD 3 billion in cloud and AI infrastructure in India over the next two years. This includes the establishment of new data centers aimed at bolstering India’s technological capabilities.

Key Highlights of the Partnership

As part of this strategic alliance, Microsoft and IndiaAI will focus on skilling half a million individuals by 2026. This initiative will include students, educators, developers, government officials, and women entrepreneurs. According to a statement from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, this effort aims to create a skilled workforce capable of driving India’s AI ambitions forward.

Additionally, a Center of Excellence named “AI Catalysts” will be set up to encourage AI-driven innovation in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The center will support 100,000 AI innovators and developers through hackathons, community-building activities, and an AI marketplace.

To further strengthen AI education and training, AI Productivity Labs will be established in 20 National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) and NIELIT centers across 10 states. These labs aim to train 20,000 educators and provide foundational AI courses to 100,000 students in 200 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).

The partnership will also focus on developing foundational AI models with Indic language support to address India’s linguistic diversity. This initiative is expected to ensure cultural and contextual relevance in AI applications.

Leaders Share Their Vision

Shri Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, highlighted the transformative potential of the collaboration. He stated, “By training 500,000 individuals, fostering innovation through AI Centers of Excellence, and delivering AI-driven solutions in critical sectors, we are advancing India’s AI ecosystem. This partnership emphasizes inclusivity by empowering underserved communities, promoting ethical AI practices, and supporting startups to drive economic growth. Together, we are committed to positioning India as a global AI leader and creating a sustainable and equitable future for all.”

Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, expressed similar enthusiasm. He said, “We are proud to come together with IndiaAI to advance AI and emerging technologies in India. By skilling 500,000 individuals, establishing AI Centers of Excellence, and setting up AI Productivity Labs, we aim to democratize access to AI, empower communities, and foster innovation, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Together with IndiaAI, we are dedicated to accelerating AI adoption and creating a sustainable future for all.”

Broader Microsoft Commitments

The collaboration with IndiaAI is part of Microsoft’s larger strategy to transform India into an AI-first nation. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced its USD 3 billion investment in India, focusing on expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure. The announcement, made by Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella in Bengaluru, included plans to skill 10 million people by 2030.

Microsoft also revealed its intention to expand its data center campuses across the country to further support its AI and cloud initiatives. Having operated in India for more than three decades, Microsoft continues to play a pivotal role in the nation’s tech ecosystem.

A Meeting of Minds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met Satya Nadella in New Delhi on Monday, where they discussed various aspects of technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence. This meeting further underscores India’s commitment to leveraging AI for national progress and global leadership.

By combining resources, expertise, and vision, the partnership between IndiaAI and Microsoft is poised to create a transformative impact on India’s AI landscape, making it a global powerhouse for artificial intelligence.

New Delhi, December 31: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has spearheaded several initiatives in 2024, focusing on cybersecurity, digital governance, and citizen empowerment. These efforts include updated regulations, regional outreach programs, and a robust digital infrastructure that has transformed India’s governance and service delivery.

Advancements in Cybersecurity

One of the key highlights of MeitY’s initiatives is the updated regulations for CCTV cameras under the Comprehensive Regulatory Order (CRO) introduced in October 2024. These regulations mandate that all CCTV cameras manufactured or sold in India must adhere to stringent security standards, including physical security, access control, network encryption, and penetration testing. This policy ensures the quality and cybersecurity of surveillance systems, thereby enhancing public safety.

Under Section 79A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Central Government empowered 15 forensic laboratories to serve as Examiners of Electronic Evidence. MeitY tasked the Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate to assess and evaluate laboratories for this role, providing courts and authorities with expert opinions on electronic evidence.

Additionally, the Cyber Surakshit Bharat initiative has been pivotal in training IT officers to combat cyber threats. In 2024, the program conducted its 43rd CISO Deep-Dive Training Programme and workshops in New Delhi and Kerala, equipping over 350 officials with the tools to enhance cybersecurity resilience.

Bridging the Digital Divide

MeitY’s efforts have significantly expanded digital access in rural India. With 5.84 lakh operational Common Service Centres (CSCs), including 4.63 lakh at the gram panchayat level, these centers provide over 800 government services, bridging the digital divide and fostering rural empowerment.

CSC e-Governance Services partnered with the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) to organize welfare camps across the country. These camps facilitated access to social security schemes like the National Pension System (NPS), Atal Pension Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri SVANidhi, empowering over 9 crore traders and citizens in remote areas.

Empowering Governance Through Technology

The ministry’s collaboration with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) and IIM Visakhapatnam has enhanced governance through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These efforts ensure the responsible implementation of AI, focusing on data privacy and ethical standards. Workshops such as the Digital India State Consultation in Tamil Nadu showcased innovative projects, including AI-based cataract detection and digital land records.

India’s digital infrastructure also received a significant boost, with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) establishing advanced National Data Centres (NDCs) in major cities. The state-of-the-art NDC in Guwahati addresses the specific challenges of the Northeastern region, fostering socio-economic growth. The MeghRaj cloud ecosystem further supports over 300 government departments, enhancing service delivery through platforms like DigiLocker, which now boasts 37 crore users and 776 crore issued documents.

Transforming Citizen Services

Platforms like UMANG and MyGov have revolutionized access to government services. UMANG offers 2,077 services in 23 languages, serving over 7.12 crore users, while MyGov engages nearly 4.89 crore registered users in participatory governance.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has set new benchmarks for financial inclusion, processing over 24,100 crore transactions by mid-2024. Similarly, MeriPehchaan, a single sign-on platform, has streamlined over 132 crore transactions, simplifying service delivery for citizens.

Education and Health Initiatives

MeitY’s focus on education and health has been transformative. With 138.34 crore Aadhaar numbers generated, and DIKSHA providing 556.37 crore learning sessions, India boasts the world’s largest digital education platform. The creation of 67 million Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) numbers and the integration of 1,803 institutions and 637 districts under the National Knowledge Network highlight the ministry’s commitment to digital empowerment.

Conclusion

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has made remarkable strides in 2024, strengthening cybersecurity, fostering digital inclusion, and transforming governance. Through innovative policies and programs, MeitY continues to empower citizens and build a digitally resilient India, aligning with the vision of a truly Digital India.
