Parkville, February 6, 2025: Researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) have conducted one of the largest eye studies globally, uncovering significant insights into retinal thickness and its potential to detect diseases like type 2 diabetes, dementia, and multiple sclerosis at an early stage.

By using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the study analyzed over 50,000 eyes, creating detailed retinal maps with unprecedented precision. These maps offer new perspectives on how variations in retinal thickness correlate with a range of diseases, including neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders.

The retina, part of the central nervous system alongside the brain and spinal cord, is crucial to understanding conditions such as dementia and diabetes. This innovative study highlights how changes in the retina’s thickness could serve as a diagnostic tool for early detection of these diseases.

Dr. Vicki Jackson, lead researcher at WEHI, emphasized the groundbreaking potential of retinal imaging: “Our research shows that retinal imaging can act as a window into the brain, helping us detect neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and other conditions early.”

The study also discovered new genetic factors that influence retinal thickness, providing deeper insight into the retina’s growth and its role in disease development. By analyzing over 50,000 retinal maps, researchers identified retinal thinning related to 294 genes, which may be pivotal in the onset and progression of diseases.

This discovery paves the way for using retinal imaging as a routine screening tool for various diseases, offering a non-invasive and accessible method for early diagnosis and disease management. The fine-scale measurements created in this study open new doors for precision medicine, potentially revolutionizing how we detect and track numerous diseases through simple eye examinations.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 5: Filmmaker and writer Tahira Kashyap marked World Cancer Day 2025 with a powerful tribute to all women courageously battling cancer. Having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, Tahira took to Instagram to share an emotional message and a photo of herself, proudly embracing her clean-shaven head— a result of her chemotherapy treatment. She also posted several moments captured during her challenging journey, offering an inspiring glimpse into her resilience.

In her heartfelt post, Tahira wrote, “And that’s life! And you make the most of it. And in making the most of it you realise how humbling the experience is. I know so many brave women who have fought with all their might. I bow my head in respect to all of them.” She further emphasized the importance of valuing life and spreading awareness about cancer prevention, adding, “Let everyone’s experience be a reminder to value our lives. To know how significant each one of us is. To know nobody else on the face of the earth can do what you can do. Spread the awareness. Early breast cancer detection is curable not just treatable. Love and hope and joy to all. Life is to celebrate gratitude all the way.”

Tahira also took a moment to speak about the challenges faced during her cancer journey, highlighting the impact of government initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and PMJAY. These programs aim to make cancer treatment accessible, especially for people from underprivileged backgrounds. “On World Cancer Day, I want to commend the Ayushman Bharat and PMJAY initiatives for making timely cancer treatment accessible to many, regardless of their financial background. Cancer is a journey that tests your strength, resilience, and faith. Early diagnosis and affordable treatment are, however, key to survival, and thanks to such government schemes, millions can now hope for a better future. Let’s continue to support one another and raise awareness about early breast cancer detection because together we can beat cancer,” she said.

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, serves as a reminder to unite individuals, communities, and organizations to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. The global initiative encourages collective action and provides much-needed support for those affected by cancer, including patients and their families.
