India’s agricultural landscape has witnessed a substantial increase in the area under rabi crops, with the total sown area reaching 655.88 lakh hectares this season, up from 643.72 lakh hectares in the same period last year. This expansion in crop acreage, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, signals promising prospects for agricultural production and, by extension, the country’s food inflation situation.

The wheat crop, a key staple, has seen a notable surge in its sowing area, expanding to 324.38 lakh hectares from 315.63 lakh hectares last year. Experts are optimistic that the favorable weather conditions, including winter rains, will further benefit wheat yields, boosting production and potentially stabilizing wheat prices.

Similarly, pulses cultivation has also experienced growth, with the area under pulses rising to 142.49 lakh hectares, up from 139.29 lakh hectares in 2024. This increase is expected to help alleviate the price pressures that have been a significant contributor to food inflation, thus easing the strain on household budgets.

The area dedicated to coarse cereals, including Shri Anna, stands at 55.67 lakh hectares, while oilseeds coverage has increased to 98.18 lakh hectares. These positive trends in diverse crops are encouraging signs for the Indian agricultural sector, contributing to greater overall food production.

The expanded sown area could play a crucial role in reducing the prices of essential food items. In turn, this is expected to provide some relief to consumers, particularly in light of the recent easing of retail inflation. As of December, India’s retail inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), dropped to a four-month low of 5.22%, thanks to declining prices of vegetables, pulses, and sugar. This drop follows a peak inflation rate of 6.21% in October, with the rate gradually decreasing over the following months.

The outlook for India’s economy remains cautiously optimistic, with the Ministry of Finance highlighting several positive factors, including favorable monsoon conditions, an increase in minimum support prices, and a steady supply of agricultural inputs. These elements combined are expected to continue supporting the agricultural sector, ultimately contributing to a reduction in food inflation and fostering broader economic stability.

As India enters this rabi season, the growth in crop coverage provides hope for a more balanced and affordable food market, benefiting both farmers and consumers alike.

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 held in Davos, India emerged as a powerhouse of investment potential, securing commitments worth more than Rs 20 lakh crore. This unprecedented achievement is a testament to India’s growing economic strength and its ability to navigate global uncertainties, presenting a promising future for the nation.

Maharashtra led the charge, capturing nearly 80% of the total investment pledges. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the state signed 61 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 15.7 lakh crore. These investments have the potential to generate more than 16 lakh jobs, further boosting Maharashtra’s economic landscape. Other states, including Telangana, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh, also made impressive strides at the event, securing significant investment commitments to fuel their development.

Telangana, represented by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, secured 20 MoUs valued at Rs 1.8 lakh crore. Kerala and Uttar Pradesh showcased ambitious growth plans, attracting attention and investments from global entities looking to tap into India’s diverse markets.

In a notable move, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu engaged in productive dialogues with CEOs and top executives from global corporations. These discussions focused on highlighting the state’s investment potential, signaling Andhra Pradesh’s readiness to welcome foreign investments across various sectors.

One of the most significant announcements from the summit came from IT giant Infosys, which revealed plans to expand its presence in Hyderabad, creating 17,000 new jobs in the process. This move reflects the growing attractiveness of India as a hub for IT and tech-driven opportunities.

Union Railways and Electronics and IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, also took center stage during the summit, outlining India’s strategic approach to balanced economic growth. Vaishnaw highlighted that India is not only focusing on services but is also ramping up manufacturing. He emphasized the shift from an import substitution model to a more forward-looking “Make in India, Make for the World” approach, positioning India as a critical player in the global supply chain.

Vaishnaw’s address underscored India’s rapid rise in the semiconductor and AI sectors. He pointed out that industry leaders now consider India as a potential top-three destination for semiconductor manufacturing. India’s growing dominance in Global Capability Centers (GCCs) focused on advanced designs was also highlighted, showcasing the country’s emerging role in global manufacturing.

In the AI space, Vaishnaw pointed out that India is positioning itself as the “use case capital” of the world. As AI models become more commoditized, the focus is shifting toward developing specific applications and solutions that cater to diverse industries globally. This presents India with a unique opportunity to lead innovation in this transformative field.

Furthermore, the Indian government’s emphasis on skilling and preparing its workforce for emerging technologies, especially AI, ensures that the country remains at the forefront of global technological advancements. By fostering a skilled labor force, India is laying the foundation for sustained growth in the future.

With its commitment to enhancing infrastructure, fostering technological innovation, and expanding its industrial capacity, India is poised to solidify its place as a global economic leader. The investments secured at WEF 2025 are just the beginning of a new chapter in India’s economic transformation, promising unprecedented growth, job creation, and global recognition in the years to come.

A recent survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has revealed a bright outlook for India’s economic future, as 75% of private firms affirm that the current economic environment is conducive to investments. This positive sentiment is further underscored by the fact that 70% of the firms surveyed plan to increase their investments in the fiscal year 2025-26 (FY’26), suggesting a potential boost in private investments in the coming quarters.

The survey, which covered a sample of 300 firms across various industries, also highlighted a continued focus on job creation, with 97% of firms indicating that they plan to increase employment over the next two fiscal years. The findings signal a strong recovery and growth trajectory for India, even amid the challenges posed by global geopolitical tensions and disruptions in supply chains.

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General of CII, emphasized that the anticipated uptick in private-sector investments and the growing employment opportunities align with India’s broader economic goals. “With the two critical drivers of growth—private investments and employment—looking positive, we feel confident that the overall growth is likely to remain stable at around 6.4-6.7 percent this year, with a possible rise to 7.0 percent in FY’26,” Banerjee stated.

The CII survey, which is part of a larger initiative to track the progress of private-sector investments, employment, and wage growth, has provided promising results. As part of its ongoing study, the CII expects to complete the survey for 500 firms by the first week of February.

Private Investments on the Rise

Despite the uncertain global economic climate, with geopolitical tensions and disruptions in supply chains, 75% of the respondents in the CII survey expressed confidence in the Indian economy’s potential to attract private investment. This optimism is largely attributed to the government’s effective economic policies, which have focused on public capital expenditure (capex) as a means to stimulate growth. As a result, India has managed to stand out as a key player in the global economy.

The significant investment plans for FY’26 further demonstrate the confidence within the private sector, with companies across all industry sizes—large, medium, and small—reporting strong intentions to boost their capital expenditures. This increase in investment is expected to have a ripple effect on the economy, generating higher demand, stimulating production, and enhancing infrastructure development.

Employment and Wage Growth: Positive Trends

Employment generation has emerged as a key focus in India’s policy discussions, with job creation being a cornerstone of the nation’s vision for 2047, which envisions a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). According to the survey, an impressive 97% of companies indicated plans to increase their workforce in both FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26. Of these firms, a majority (42-46%) expect to increase their workforce by 10-20% over the next two years, while around 31-36% anticipate growth of up to 10%.

The manufacturing and services sectors are expected to see the largest increases in direct employment, with projections ranging from 15-22%. Indirect employment is also expected to grow significantly, with firms in both sectors forecasting a 14% rise in employment in the near future.

The survey also revealed that companies are facing challenges in filling senior management and supervisory positions, with hiring times for these roles typically ranging from one to six months. This indicates the ongoing need for a skilled workforce at higher levels within the industry.

Wages: A Driver of Consumption

The survey also highlighted a positive trend in wage growth, which has a direct impact on personal consumption—a key factor in driving economic expansion. Around 40-45% of the firms surveyed reported an increase in wage growth for senior management, managerial, and regular workers in the range of 10-20% for FY’25, continuing the upward trend observed in FY’24.

This wage growth, coupled with employment increases and rising investments, bodes well for India’s consumption-driven economy, providing a solid foundation for continued economic stability.

A Bright Future Ahead

The interim results from CII’s survey, while not yet complete, paint a promising picture for India’s economic future. With robust plans for private-sector investments, widespread job creation, and wage growth, India is poised for a period of sustained economic growth. These trends align with the government’s vision of creating a developed nation by 2047, supported by strong private-sector engagement and a thriving job market.

As India navigates the challenges posed by the global economy, the optimism reflected in this survey offers a hopeful glimpse into the country’s long-term growth prospects, signaling a future marked by robust economic performance, employment opportunities, and a vibrant private sector.

On its ninth anniversary, the Startup India mission continues to be a driving force behind India’s economic growth and innovation. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, lauded the initiative’s pivotal role in transforming India’s entrepreneurial landscape. The Minister emphasized that the success of Startup India could largely be attributed to crucial funding mechanisms, especially the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), which has catalyzed growth across various sectors and regions.

Empowering Startups with Funding and Support

The Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), administered by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and backed by the Government of India, has played a vital role in mobilizing private capital, particularly in Tier II and Tier III cities. This focus on regional growth has allowed startups to scale their operations and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy.

In his address, Piyush Goyal highlighted how these funding mechanisms have fueled startup growth, empowering them to innovate and expand. He underscored the importance of private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) in providing startups with the financial backing and global expertise necessary for success. According to Goyal, this collaboration not only accelerates innovation but also enables startups to compete on the international stage.

One of the standout initiatives of the government in this regard is the BHASKAR platform, designed to connect startups with mentorship, financial tools, and collaborative opportunities across the country. This ecosystem of support has helped Indian startups build resilience, overcome challenges, and stay competitive.

Startups as Agents of Change

Indian startups have emerged as powerful agents of change, addressing some of the nation’s most pressing issues, including sustainability, renewable energy, healthcare, and digital transformation. “Through their innovation and resilience, they are shaping a better future for all of us,” said Goyal, emphasizing the transformative impact of these young companies.

India’s startup ecosystem has shown tremendous growth, with a remarkable 76 Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in 2024 alone. As of January 15, 2025, the country boasts 1,59,157 startups—a massive leap from around 500 in 2016. This growth has resulted in the creation of 17.2 lakh direct jobs, demonstrating the profound economic contribution of startups.

India’s Startup Ecosystem: A Global Leader

India now ranks as the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, a testament to the success of initiatives like Startup India. With a growing number of startups, funding of Rs 13 trillion from the government, and increasing participation from private investors, India is becoming a global leader in innovation and technology-driven growth.

Piyush Goyal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where startups can thrive. From technological sectors such as digitech and artificial intelligence to policy-driven initiatives, the government has positioned India as a leader in the global startup arena. “We are committed to providing support in terms of policies, infrastructure, and capital to ensure the continued growth of India’s startup ecosystem,” he said.

The Role of Women in India’s Startup Revolution

An important aspect of India’s startup journey has been the increasing participation of women in entrepreneurship. Goyal pointed out that 43% of STEM graduates in India are women, underlining their critical role in driving innovation and growth. He highlighted initiatives like the Women Entrepreneurship Platform, which empowers women-led startups, furthering India’s vision of inclusive growth.

Looking Ahead: A New Phase of Innovation

As India enters a crucial phase of development with strong macroeconomic fundamentals, Goyal emphasized the essential role startups will play in achieving the nation’s long-term goals. These companies will be at the forefront of realizing a self-reliant, inclusive, and globally competitive India in the coming decades.

The Startup Mahakumbh and the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge

The anniversary event also served as a curtain raiser for the second edition of the Startup Mahakumbh, scheduled for April 2025. This grand event will feature over 2,500 startups, further solidifying India’s role as a global hub for entrepreneurship. Additionally, the government launched the PRABHAAV Factbook, offering a comprehensive overview of India’s startup ecosystem and its evolution from 2016 to 2024.

Moreover, the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge was unveiled, aiming to address 75 challenges across diverse sectors such as renewable energy, blockchain, agritech, and smart manufacturing. This challenge will provide startups with opportunities for procurement, cash prizes, mentorship, funding, and networking, enabling them to further scale their impact and contribute to India’s growth story.

Conclusion

The ninth anniversary of the Startup India mission marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. Through a combination of robust funding, supportive policies, and a collaborative ecosystem, the country’s startup sector has flourished. As the government continues to strengthen its commitment to fostering entrepreneurial growth, India is well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory in the years to come, driven by the ingenuity and resilience of its startups.

New Delhi, January 18: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has retained its growth forecast for India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at 6.5% for both fiscal year 2026 and fiscal year 2027. This projection was confirmed in the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) report.

In the report, the global financial institution emphasized that India’s economic growth is expected to remain robust, with a 6.5% growth rate in 2025 and 2026, which aligns with the country’s potential. However, the IMF also highlighted that the pace of India’s GDP growth has slowed more than anticipated, primarily due to a sharper-than-expected deceleration in industrial activity.

India’s economic performance faced a slowdown in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, with GDP growth dropping to 5.4% compared to 6.7% in the same period the previous year. Despite this moderation, India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with a recorded GDP growth rate of 8.4% for fiscal year 2024.

The Finance Ministry’s November economic review noted that while there are new uncertainties surrounding global trade for fiscal year 2026, India’s economic outlook remains cautiously optimistic. The report suggested that growth in the second half of fiscal year 2025 is expected to outperform the first half, buoyed by promising indicators in key sectors during the third quarter.

Additionally, the report pointed out challenges posed by the strong US dollar and potential policy rate adjustments in the United States, which are exerting pressure on emerging market currencies, including India’s.

On a global scale, the IMF has forecasted a modest global growth rate of 3.3% for both 2025 and 2026, which is below the historical average of 3.7% observed between 2000 and 2019. This projection remains largely unchanged from the October 2024 WEO, with the upward revision in the US economy offsetting downward revisions in other major economies.

As global growth prospects remain subdued, India’s economic resilience continues to be a focal point in the global landscape.

Chandra Arya, a Member of Parliament representing Nepean, Ontario, has officially entered the race to become the next Prime Minister of Canada. Arya, an India-origin politician, made his candidacy official by filing his nomination and addressing the House of Commons in Kannada, his mother tongue, underscoring his strong connection to his roots.

Born in Tumkur district, Karnataka, Arya moved to Canada after completing his MBA in Dharwad. His journey reflects the experiences of many immigrants who have made significant contributions to Canadian society. Arya has served as a Member of Parliament, and his announcement to run for Prime Minister marks a new chapter in his political career, focusing on Canada’s future and addressing critical issues facing the nation.

In a post shared on X, Arya outlined his vision for Canada’s future, emphasizing the need for bold decisions to ensure prosperity for future generations. “I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a smaller, more efficient government, rebuild our nation, and secure prosperity for future generations,” Arya stated. His candidacy comes at a time when Canada faces significant challenges, including rising costs of living and a struggling middle class.

Arya’s platform is built on the idea of making Canada “a sovereign republic,” an aspiration he believes will require transformative political decisions. He has been vocal about his stance on national issues, including speaking out against Khalistan supporters who have celebrated the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and condemning the defacing of Hindu temples in Canada. Arya’s strong advocacy for India and his commitment to promoting bilateral relations between Canada and India have made him a key figure within both the Indian and Canadian diasporas.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has praised Arya as a “genuine advocate for India,” highlighting his commitment to strengthening the ties between the two nations. Arya, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi in August 2024, also emphasizes the importance of India as a growing market for Canadian exports and a source of critical talent for the Canadian economy.

Canada’s current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced earlier this month that he would step down but remain in office until a new leader is chosen. Arya’s entry into the race has added a new dynamic to the leadership contest within the Liberal Party, with the country’s future direction at stake.

In his campaign, Arya acknowledged the difficult challenges facing Canada, particularly the affordability crisis affecting younger generations and the struggling middle class. He said, “Many Canadians, especially younger generations, face significant affordability issues. The working middle class is struggling today, and many working families are retiring directly into poverty.”

Arya emphasized the need for a leader who is unafraid to make difficult decisions. “Canada deserves leadership that isn’t afraid to make big decisions—decisions that rebuild our economy, restore hope, create equal opportunities for all Canadians, and secure prosperity for our children and grandchildren,” Arya declared.

His bold vision reflects his belief that Canada must address its “perfect storm” of structural problems with pragmatic and prudent leadership. Arya has pledged to offer his knowledge and expertise to rebuild Canada’s economy, restore hope, and secure a better future for all Canadians.

As the race for the next Prime Minister of Canada heats up, Chandra Arya’s candidacy brings a fresh and bold perspective to the political landscape. With a platform focused on revitalizing the nation and strengthening Canada’s international ties, Arya aims to position himself as a leader who can tackle the nation’s most pressing issues head-on.

Canada now faces a critical juncture in its political future, and with Arya stepping forward, the country will soon choose a leader who will shape its direction for years to come.

London, January 16, 2025 (ANI) – India has been recognized as one of the world’s most prepared job markets for the future, according to the inaugural QS World Future Skills Index. The comprehensive report highlights India’s readiness to recruit talent in rapidly evolving sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, and green technologies.

The QS World Future Skills Index, produced by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluates countries based on four key criteria: Skills Fit, Academic Readiness, Future of Work, and Economic Transformation. These indicators assess how well countries are positioned to meet the changing demands of the global workforce. India ranks 25th overall in the index, emerging as a “Future Skills Contender,” and notably excels in the Future of Work category, securing the second-highest score globally (99.1), just behind the United States.

India’s Strengths: A Dynamic and Resilient Job Market

India’s impressive score in the Future of Work indicator reflects its job market’s readiness to recruit talent equipped with the skills needed for the future. The country’s ability to attract venture capital funding, even amidst global downturns, signals a robust and resilient investment ecosystem. Furthermore, India is set apart from many other nations by its rapid integration of AI into its workforce, positioning it well for the future job market.

The report specifically identifies India as one of the countries “most ready to recruit into digital roles,” along with Mexico. This suggests that India’s job market is prepared to meet the growing demand for digital expertise in sectors ranging from software development to data science and machine learning.

Areas for Improvement: Education and Industry Collaboration

Despite these strengths, the report highlights areas where India’s education system, industry collaboration, and employment markets need further development. While Indian universities perform well in international rankings, there remains a significant gap in equipping graduates with the in-demand digital, AI, and green skills that employers increasingly seek.

To address these gaps, the QS World Future Skills Index makes several recommendations for India’s higher education system:

Increase Tertiary Education Supply: India needs to leverage its large, youthful population by expanding access to higher education, particularly in fields that will drive long-term economic growth. More routes into tertiary education are crucial to avoiding potential skills shortages.

Modularised Learning: Adopting modular learning approaches that lower barriers to entry can help increase the supply of graduates with skills aligned to industry demands, particularly in high-growth sectors such as AI, green technologies, and digital roles.

Foster Entrepreneurial and Innovative Mindsets: Indian universities should prioritize integrating creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking into their curricula. Strengthening partnerships with industry will help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world business needs.

Focus on Green Skills and Sustainability: Embedding sustainability and green skills into academic programs is crucial, as India faces a growing demand for talent in sectors like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Progress is being made, with 21 of India’s 78 universities featured in the 2025 QS Sustainability Rankings, but there remains room for improvement in green skills development.

Bridge Investment and Innovation Gaps: The report underscores the need for greater investment in research and development (R&D) to drive innovation and economic transformation. India’s R&D spending, at just 0.6% of GDP, is significantly lower than leading nations such as the U.S. (3.5%) and the UK (2.9%).

Strengthen Industry-Academia Collaboration: India’s higher education sector must work more closely with industry to ensure that academic curricula evolve in line with fast-changing business requirements. Strengthening this collaboration will help improve Skills Fit and ensure that graduates are better prepared for the demands of the future job market.

India’s Bright Economic Future

Despite these challenges, India’s economic trajectory remains promising. The country is expected to experience an average annual GDP growth of 6.5% between 2025 and 2030, outpacing many global competitors. This growth is largely driven by India’s youthful population, burgeoning start-up culture, and dynamic economy.

Matteo Quacquarelli, Vice President of Strategy and Analytics at QS, emphasizes that India’s young demographic offers the nation a unique opportunity for continued growth. He points out that while many countries face demographic challenges due to aging populations, India’s youthful workforce presents an advantage in the race for future talent.

The Road Ahead

The QS analysis also provides strategic recommendations for higher education institutions in India. Among these are the establishment of lifelong learning pathways, the implementation of modularized learning to enhance skill alignment with industry needs, and the fostering of international research partnerships. These initiatives could play a critical role in closing the gaps in emerging technologies such as AI and green innovation.

As the world transitions into a future driven by AI, digitalization, and sustainability, India’s educational institutions, industries, and policymakers must work together to ensure that the country remains at the forefront of this transformation. By addressing the gaps in education, innovation, and industry collaboration, India can continue to build a workforce capable of meeting the demands of the global job market in the years ahead.

In conclusion, India’s strong performance in the QS World Future Skills Index signals that the country is on the right path to becoming a global leader in preparing talent for the jobs of the future. However, continued investment in education, innovation, and sustainability is essential for realizing its full potential. As India positions itself to take advantage of the opportunities presented by its youthful population and economic growth, the country must remain agile and proactive in addressing the evolving needs of the global workforce.

In a significant step towards enhancing Kerala’s position as a global investment hub, Industries Minister P. Rajeev led a high-profile delegation to Dubai, where the state secured strong support for the upcoming Invest Kerala Global Summit (IKGS) scheduled for February 21-22, 2025. This visit marks a pivotal moment in Kerala’s ongoing efforts to attract international investment and deepen its ties with key global markets, particularly the UAE.

The meetings, held from January 13-14, 2025, brought together Minister Rajeev and top UAE officials, including UAE Minister of Investment Mohamed Hassan Al Suwaidi and Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce. These discussions proved fruitful, with the UAE confirming its commitment to the event by sending a special delegation to Kerala for the summit. The UAE’s strong support signals a new chapter in bilateral trade and investment between Kerala and the Gulf nation.

Strategic Areas of Collaboration

The meetings focused on areas of mutual interest, with Minister Suwaidi expressing particular interest in Kerala’s burgeoning logistics and food processing sectors. The UAE has seen its investments diversify across various industries, and Kerala’s established strengths in these sectors made it an attractive destination for capital inflows. To further assess potential investment opportunities, the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce also announced plans to send officials to Kerala for preliminary site evaluations ahead of the IKGS.

The discussions underscored Kerala’s readiness to embrace international investment, as the state continues to evolve as a crucial player in India’s economic landscape.

Ambassador’s Remarks on Kerala’s Strategic Position

During the investor roadshow at Taj Dubai, Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Shri Sunjay Sudhir, highlighted the unique strategic position of Kerala in Indo-UAE relations. “Kerala stands out in the trade connection. From humble beginnings, we have reached a stage where India is the UAE’s second-largest trading partner,” Ambassador Sudhir noted. He further underscored the growing economic importance of the UAE’s capital, stating that Abu Dhabi has emerged as the “capital of capital” with its sovereign wealth fund assets surpassing those of many other global financial hubs.

Minister Rajeev’s Vision for Kerala’s Industrial Future

Minister Rajeev took the opportunity to address potential investors and challenge misconceptions about Kerala’s industrial landscape. He emphasized the state’s remarkable contributions to India’s economy, despite its relatively small geographic and demographic footprint. “Despite occupying just 1.16% of India’s land area and 2.8% of its population, Kerala contributes a remarkable 4% to the national GDP,” he pointed out, bolstered by compelling statistics about the state’s diverse industrial achievements.

The minister also spotlighted Kerala’s leadership in the medical device industry, revealing that the state accounts for 24% of India’s total medical device industry turnover and 17% of medical device products. This data demonstrates Kerala’s significant role in the healthcare sector, both domestically and globally.

Technological Innovation at Kerala’s Core

In addition to its industrial prowess, Minister Rajeev highlighted Kerala’s pioneering role in technology. He drew attention to the state’s long history of technological leadership, citing the establishment of Keltron in 1973 – India’s first public-sector electronics company – and Technopark in 1993, which remains the country’s first and largest technology park.

Today, Kerala’s technological expertise continues to shape India’s future, with Keltron managing cutting-edge AI-based traffic control systems for National Highways and smart city projects across the country. These achievements underscore Kerala’s robust infrastructure in technology, making it an attractive destination for both domestic and foreign investors.

Looking Ahead to the Global Summit

With strong backing from the UAE’s business and government leaders, the upcoming Invest Kerala Global Summit is poised to be a landmark event in the state’s investment journey. The summit promises to be an excellent platform for showcasing Kerala’s potential across key sectors, including logistics, food processing, medical devices, and technology. As Kerala continues to foster strong ties with international markets, it is on track to become a major player in the global economic landscape.

As the state gears up for the IKGS in February, all eyes will be on Kerala’s growing role as a dynamic economic hub, driven by innovation, industrial excellence, and strategic international partnerships.

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], January 12: The Adani Group has revealed plans to invest a substantial Rs 75,000 crore in Chhattisgarh, with investments spanning across several key sectors including power, cement, education, healthcare, skill development, and tourism. This announcement came after a meeting between the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Gautam Adani unveiled a roadmap that includes a Rs 60,000 crore investment to expand the Adani Group’s power plants located in Raipur, Korba, and Raigarh. This expansion aims to significantly boost the state’s power generation capacity by adding an additional 6,120 MW to Chhattisgarh’s grid.

In addition to the power sector, Adani also pledged Rs 5,000 crore for the development and expansion of the group’s cement plants within the state, further strengthening the state’s industrial base.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has put forward a 10-point reform agenda to the central government in anticipation of the 2025 Budget, with the goal of further improving the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) in India.

The industry body has called for a more streamlined and transparent regulatory framework to support businesses, suggesting that all regulatory approvals—spanning central, state, and local levels—should be mandatorily processed through the National Single Window System (NSWS). CII believes this will significantly enhance transparency and expedite the approval process. To implement this, the first phase should include all central ministries within the next six months, followed by a phased inclusion of states. The body further suggested that a dedicated budget be allocated to incentivize states to transition fully to the platform.

The CII highlighted that as global competition intensifies and geopolitical conditions evolve rapidly, improving the domestic business environment must be prioritized. While India has made significant strides in enhancing its business climate over the past decade, the industry body emphasized the need to keep up the momentum, particularly in areas like simplifying regulatory frameworks and reducing compliance burdens.

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General of CII, stressed that simplifying regulatory procedures and reducing compliance burdens should remain a key focus for the country in the years to come. He mentioned that sectors dealing with land, labor, dispute resolution, tax payments, and environmental compliance have substantial potential for simplification, which is essential for boosting competitiveness, fostering economic growth, and generating employment opportunities.

In addition to these suggestions, CII recommended the enactment of a law mandating public authorities to provide services within a fixed time frame and establish a mechanism for grievance redressal. The law should also include provisions for deemed approval if the prescribed timelines are exceeded.

Further, CII urged the government to expedite dispute resolution processes by enhancing court capacities and increasing reliance on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms. To tackle the issue of case backlog, the body proposed expanding the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) to include data from tribunals, which account for a significant portion of the country’s pending cases.

On the environmental front, CII called for a unified framework that consolidates various environmental compliance requirements into a single document. This would help streamline the process and reduce the burden on businesses. Additionally, the body suggested implementing a performance-based incentive system to recognize companies that exceed environmental standards. Such companies could be rewarded with expedited environmental and forest approvals and permits.

CII also highlighted the need for easier access to land for businesses. It recommended that states be incentivized to create an Online Integrated Land Authority that would streamline land bank management, digitize land records, and provide information on land disputes.

Other recommendations include reducing labor compliance complexities, enhancing trade facilitation, and minimizing tax-related litigation to further improve the business climate.

The 2025-26 Union Budget, scheduled for presentation on February 1, 2025, will mark Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s eighth budget. The industry and experts are keenly awaiting her announcements, which will outline the government’s economic plans for the remaining period of the Modi 3.0 administration. The upcoming budget holds particular significance against the backdrop of weaker-than-expected GDP growth and sluggish consumption in the economy.

India’s GDP grew by just 5.4 percent in the July-September quarter of 2024-25, which was notably lower than the Reserve Bank of India’s forecast of 7 percent. The previous quarter also saw slower growth than expected, raising concerns over the economic momentum.

The Finance Ministry has already begun the process of preparing the 2025-26 Budget, holding a series of pre-budget consultations with stakeholders, including industry leaders, economists, MSME representatives, and farmers’ associations. Finance Minister Sitharaman has personally conducted several rounds of discussions with various groups to gather insights for the upcoming budget.
