New Delhi, January 27: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in Oman for a two-day visit focused on strengthening India-Oman trade relations and advancing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations. Goyal commenced his visit with an “engaging and excellent” meeting with Oman’s Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef.

On his official social media, Goyal expressed optimism about the discussions, stating that they centered on enhancing trade and investment ties between the two nations. He also highlighted the intention to explore further avenues for deepening the bilateral partnership. In anticipation of the 11th Joint Commission Meeting (JCM), which will take place from January 27-28, Goyal noted that the talks would focus on “advancing CEPA negotiations and strengthening economic cooperation.”

India views Oman as a key partner in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), with bilateral trade surpassing USD 8.94 billion in 2023-2024. As part of the ongoing effort to enhance these ties, the two countries are in the advanced stages of negotiating the CEPA. The agreement aims to create a commercially significant, balanced, and mutually beneficial framework that will bolster trade and investment across multiple sectors.

During his visit, Goyal is accompanied by a business delegation that will participate in the Joint Business Council meeting between the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The discussions are expected to cover a range of topics, including the global economic landscape and investment opportunities.

In addition to his meetings with Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef, Goyal is scheduled to meet with other prominent Omani officials, including Sultan bin Salim Al Habsi, Minister of Finance and Chairperson of the Ministerial Committee for CEPA, and Sheikh Dr. Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy, President of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ). These interactions aim to further strengthen economic ties and explore new areas for collaboration.

India and Indonesia’s mutual fund industries have embarked on a transformative journey of collaboration, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing financial practices, promoting investor education, and driving mutual growth. The MoU, signed on January 26, 2025, in New Delhi, represents a historic step towards strengthening the bilateral financial ties between the two nations, with a particular focus on the mutual fund sectors.

The agreement came in the wake of a visit by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who was accompanied by a delegation of 12 leading CEOs from Indonesia’s asset management industry. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog, signaling the importance of the collaboration at a governmental level.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The MoU outlines several core areas of collaboration, including regulatory reforms, governance standards, investor protection, and risk management strategies. The partnership seeks to create a platform for exchanging best practices, strategies, and insights between the two countries, aiming to improve industry standards and promote financial literacy. This cross-border knowledge sharing is expected to drive innovation, transparency, and a more globally integrated mutual fund ecosystem.

The MoU also emphasizes the importance of data analytics and research, crucial components for shaping the future of the mutual fund industry in both India and Indonesia. With a shared goal of enhancing the financial systems, both countries aim to create more dynamic capital markets, leveraging their respective strengths in asset management and technology.

Industry Leaders Weigh In

During the event, Navneet Munot, Chairman of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), spoke about the broader vision behind the partnership, aligning it with India’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” goal and Indonesia’s ambition to become a developed economy by 2045, marking 100 years of independence. Munot underscored the role of a strong mutual fund sector in realizing these milestones, highlighting the success of India’s mutual fund industry in recent years and its potential to share its learnings with Indonesia.

“India’s mutual fund industry has seen tremendous growth under the guidance of our market regulators. By sharing our best practices, we aim to help Indonesia’s industry grow and eventually create a gateway for Indonesian investors to explore opportunities in India,” Munot added.

Strengthening Financial Ecosystems

Hanif Mantiq, Chairman of the Indonesian Asset Management Association (AMII), stressed that the partnership could serve as a model for strengthening the financial sectors of emerging markets globally. He highlighted the mutual benefits of learning from each other’s regulatory frameworks and governance structures, ensuring greater security and innovation for investors in both countries.

The MoU promises to enhance capacity-building efforts, including workshops and educational programs designed to empower investors in both nations. By promoting responsible investment practices and fostering investor confidence, the collaboration is poised to shape the future of the mutual fund industry in India and Indonesia.

A Bright Future for Mutual Funds

Both countries stand to gain significantly from this collaboration, which also seeks to create more integrated financial markets. As India continues to lead in financial innovation and governance, this partnership offers a unique opportunity to strengthen ties with Indonesia’s emerging market, setting the stage for long-term growth in the mutual fund industry.

In the coming months and years, the partnership will likely open doors for further initiatives, such as joint research programs, cross-border investments, and shared technological advancements. Ultimately, this collaboration will not only benefit the mutual fund sectors but also contribute to the overall economic growth and prosperity of both nations.

Abu Dhabi, UAE – January 14, 2025: A historic milestone in international trade was reached today as UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon witnessed the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two nations. The ceremony took place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) and saw the signing of the agreement by Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, and Todd McClay, New Zealand Minister for Trade.

This new agreement is set to reduce trade barriers, streamline customs procedures, and foster increased private sector collaboration and investment between the two countries. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed highlighted that the agreement marks a significant addition to the UAE’s CEPA program, strengthening its connections with the Asia-Pacific region, one of the world’s most developed and open markets.

The UAE-New Zealand CEPA is built upon the growing economic ties between the two nations, with bilateral non-oil trade having reached USD 642 million in the first nine months of 2024, reflecting an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Sheikh Mohamed emphasized that the CEPA reflects the shared ambition of both countries to create resilient, future-ready economies powered by knowledge, innovation, and talent.

As part of the agreement, New Zealand will provide 100% duty-free access to all imports from the UAE, while the UAE will offer duty-free access to 98.5% of New Zealand products, with this figure set to rise to 99% within three years. This trade deal is expected to increase bilateral trade to USD 5 billion by 2032, tripling the five-year average trade of USD 1.5 billion between the two nations from 2019-2023.

This partnership is particularly significant as it marks New Zealand’s first trade agreement with a Middle Eastern nation, and it stands as one of the UAE’s most expansive CEPAs to date. The agreement covers a wide array of areas, including indigenous trade, sustainable development, women’s economic empowerment, and transparency. In addition to the CEPA, a Bilateral Investment Treaty aimed at promoting and protecting investments was also concluded, ensuring a stronger framework for increasing UAE-New Zealand investment ties across multiple sectors.

The UAE’s CEPA program, launched in September 2021, is a central part of the country’s economic growth strategy, which targets USD 1 trillion in total trade value by 2031 and aims to double the size of its economy to surpass USD 800 billion by 2031. To date, the program has resulted in agreements with nations across the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe, broadening access to markets that represent nearly a quarter of the world’s population.

This agreement solidifies the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its economic relations globally, with a particular focus on creating mutually beneficial partnerships that promote innovation, sustainability, and long-term economic growth.
