Bengaluru, Karnataka, January 17, 2025: In a landmark development aimed at deepening the diplomatic relationship between the United States and India, the US government officially dedicated its new consulate in Bengaluru on January 17, 2025. This marks the opening of the fifth US consulate in India, further cementing the growing ties between the two nations.

The dedication ceremony was attended by US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, and India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar. Together, they unveiled the site of the new consulate, an important milestone in the expanding diplomatic engagement between the United States and India. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, also participated in the event.

The US Consulate in Bengaluru is designed to build upon the more than 30-year presence of the US government in the city, with an emphasis on enhancing economic and political relations, as well as fostering public diplomacy and people-to-people engagement. The consulate will also augment existing US and Foreign Commercial Service capabilities. Initially, consular services will continue to be managed by the US Consulate in Chennai and other diplomatic posts across India.

The establishment of the Bengaluru consulate is part of the broader initiative announced during US President Joe Biden’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023. This commitment aims to further strengthen the partnership between the United States and India, particularly in the areas of technology, defense, and space exploration.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Ambassador Garcetti highlighted the strategic importance of Bengaluru, noting the city’s reputation for innovation and entrepreneurship. “Our relationship truly extends from the seabed to the stars, and nowhere is that truer than here in Bengaluru. The innovation and entrepreneurship of this state— from semiconductors to space— is matched only by Silicon Valley in my home state of California. I’m so proud to dedicate our new consulate site and announce the expansion of collaboration between the American people and the citizens of Karnataka,” he said.

Minister Jaishankar also expressed his optimism about the future of India-US relations. “I do believe today it is within our grasp, within the realm of possibility that we realize more fully the potential of the India-US relationship… I see a great future for India and the United States, and I think, in that future, obviously Bengaluru will also have a salient part,” he said, emphasizing the city’s pivotal role in the evolving bilateral partnership.

Shivakumar, reflecting on the significance of the event, described the consulate’s opening as a symbol of the strong ties between the United States and India, particularly with the state of Karnataka. He highlighted that Karnataka has long been at the heart of India’s growth and innovation, making it an ideal location for the new consulate.

Bengaluru, often referred to as India’s “Silicon Valley,” is home to nearly 700 US companies and tens of thousands of US citizens who live, work, study, and visit the state. The city plays a vital role in the technology and aerospace sectors and is increasingly a hub for collaborations between the US and India. One such example is the upcoming launch of the jointly developed NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite, along with a mission to send NASA-trained Indian astronauts to the International Space Station in 2025.

The US government first established a presence in Bengaluru in 1993 with the opening of its Commercial Service post. Over the years, the city has become a key link for US defense, technology, and aerospace companies, further underlining its strategic importance in the India-US partnership.

As Bengaluru continues to evolve as a center of technological innovation and international collaboration, the new US consulate is poised to play a critical role in fostering deeper connections between the two nations, enhancing diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges.

With this new consulate, the US government reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship with India, ensuring a brighter future for both nations and their citizens.
