Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], December 28: The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 continues with an exciting clash between Hyderabad FC (HFC) and East Bengal FC (EBFC) at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium. Scheduled for December 28, Saturday, at 5:00 PM IST, this will be the ninth ISL face-off between these two sides, with East Bengal aiming to maintain their recent dominance over Hyderabad.

East Bengal FC have had the upper hand in their last two encounters with Hyderabad FC, completing a league double over them during the 2023-24 season. On the other hand, Hyderabad FC, currently reeling from five consecutive league defeats, will be eager to reverse their fortunes on home turf.

The Red & Gold Brigade, meanwhile, are riding a wave of resurgence. They have won four out of their last five matches, climbing to 11th place in the league standings with 13 points from 12 matches. In comparison, Hyderabad FC, struggling at 12th place, have managed just seven points from the same number of games. East Bengal’s attacking form has been particularly impressive in recent games, with nine goals scored in their last five matches—a key factor in their revival.

Hyderabad FC’s defensive struggles have been a recurring theme this season, with 25 goals conceded in 12 matches—their second-highest tally at this stage of an ISL campaign. This includes heavy defeats such as a 6-0 drubbing by Odisha FC and a 5-2 loss to NorthEast United FC. Despite these setbacks, defender Alex Saji has been a standout performer, averaging 5.8 clearances per game—the highest among Indian players this season. His leadership at the back will be crucial as Hyderabad attempt to keep East Bengal’s attack in check.

East Bengal FC come into this match on a two-game winning streak, having defeated Punjab FC 4-2 and Jamshedpur FC 1-0. They will aim to make history by securing three consecutive ISL wins for the first time. Additionally, the team has shown defensive solidity in recent outings, with three clean sheets in their last five matches, including a 2-0 away win against Chennaiyin FC. Another clean sheet in this match would mark a milestone for East Bengal, as they have never achieved consecutive away clean sheets in ISL history.

In their past eight encounters, Hyderabad FC hold the upper hand with four wins, while East Bengal have won twice. Two matches ended in draws.

Hyderabad FC’s interim head coach, Shameel Chembakath, acknowledged the challenges but emphasized his team’s determination to bounce back. “I know the morale is not what we wanted it to be, but the players are showing determination in training. It’s a home match, so we need to get three points and stay focused on a positive result,” he stated.

Meanwhile, East Bengal head coach Oscar Bruzon highlighted the importance of this game for their league campaign. “This match is very important since we need to consolidate our position in the points table. We’ve been discussing what we need to do in the last few games,” he said.

Key players to watch include Cleiton Silva, who has struggled to find the net this season but boasts a strong record against Hyderabad FC, having scored in his last two matches against them. Another name to keep an eye on is David Lalhlansanga, who has scored twice this season with a perfect shooting accuracy of 100%.

For Hyderabad, Edmilson Correia’s recent performance stands out—he scored twice in their 2-5 loss to NorthEast United FC and recorded an xG differential of 1.88, the second-highest in a single game this season. His attacking flair could prove to be a handful for East Bengal’s defense.

With both teams desperate to improve their standing, this match promises an intriguing battle. East Bengal FC will look to continue their upward trajectory, while Hyderabad FC will hope to reignite their campaign with a morale-boosting victory at home.

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], December 27: In a thrilling day of football action at the Deccan Arena, West Bengal and Manipur secured their places in the semi-finals of the 78th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy. While Bengal showcased composure to overcome Odisha, Manipur displayed sheer resilience and flair to edge past Delhi in extra time.

Bengal’s Comeback Victory Against Odisha

Thirty-two-time champions West Bengal once again proved their mettle, recovering from a one-goal deficit to defeat Odisha 3-1. This victory marks their 52nd appearance in the semi-finals of the Santosh Trophy.

Odisha stunned Bengal early on, taking the lead in the 25th minute through Rakesh Oram. Oram’s perfectly timed header, following a corner from Bikash Kumar Sahoo, gave the underdogs a moment to cherish. However, Bengal equalised just before the break, thanks to a powerful strike from Narohari Shrestha.

The second half saw Bengal assert dominance. Robi Hansda, the tournament’s leading scorer, showcased his quality yet again with a sensational left-footed half-volley in the 70th minute, following an assist from Shrestha. As Odisha pushed forward for an equaliser, substitute Manotos Maji sealed Bengal’s win with an injury-time goal on a counter-attack.

Hansda’s ninth goal of the tournament not only consolidated his position as the top scorer but also highlighted Bengal’s attacking prowess. Despite Odisha’s spirited fight, Bengal’s experience and composure carried them through, keeping their dream of a 33rd title alive.

Manipur Triumphs in Extra-Time Thriller Against Delhi

In the second quarter-final, Manipur delivered a spectacle, overcoming Delhi 5-2 in an electrifying match that went into extra time. The regulation 90 minutes ended in a 2-2 stalemate, but Manipur’s attacking brilliance in extra time proved too much for Delhi.

Delhi took an early lead in the 10th minute when Jaideep Singh capitalised on a goalkeeping error by Salam Sanaton Singh. However, Manipur equalised early in the second half as LT Lowly found the net following a deflection off a corner. Barely a minute later, Sagar Singh’s stunning curling shot gave Manipur a 2-1 advantage.

Delhi’s persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Jaideep Singh calmly converted a penalty, bringing the game level once again. With neither side able to find a winner in regular time, the match headed into extra time.

Manipur’s Shunjanthan Ragui emerged as the star of the match, scoring twice in the additional period. His outstanding volley off a cleared corner restored Manipur’s lead in the fourth minute of extra time, and he extended it with a composed penalty towards the end of the first extra-time period. Ragui’s Player of the Match performance was capped by his involvement in the team’s final goal, as Khullakpam Zahir Khan expertly headed in his curling cross early in the second extra-time period.

Deflated by Manipur’s relentless attack, Delhi struggled to mount a comeback. Manipur’s fifth appearance in the Santosh Trophy semi-finals was secured in emphatic fashion, showcasing their determination and skill.

Both Bengal and Manipur now look ahead to the semi-finals, with Bengal aiming for their 33rd title and Manipur chasing glory through sheer grit and brilliance. Football fans can expect more thrilling action as the tournament approaches its climax.
