Every year, December 25th marks Good Governance Day, or Sushasan Diwas, in India. This day is dedicated to remembering the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a leader whose legacy continues to inspire the nation. The day emphasizes the importance of accountability, transparency, and citizen-centric governance, which are essential for improving the quality of public services.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee: A Visionary Leader

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, served as India’s Prime Minister three times. His leadership was marked by significant milestones, from his initial tenure in 1996 to his full term from 1999 to 2004. Vajpayee, also a gifted poet and writer, was the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold the Prime Minister’s office.

During his tenure, Vajpayee introduced transformative programs aimed at enhancing governance and addressing the needs of the people. Initiatives like the Kisan Credit Card, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and the National Rural Health Programme were designed to improve the lives of citizens, especially those in rural areas. His leadership earned him the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2015.

2024 Celebrations: Honoring Vajpayee’s Centenary

In 2024, India commemorates Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 100th birth anniversary with special celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Madhya Pradesh on December 25th, where he will inaugurate key projects in Khajuraho. Among the most significant is the Ken-Betwa river linking project, a pioneering initiative under India’s national perspective plan aimed at providing irrigation to farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will release a commemorative stamp and coin to honor Vajpayee’s legacy and lay the foundation for 1,153 Atal Gram Sushasan buildings, which will support local governance at the Gram Panchayat level. Another major development is the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Khandwa district, aligning with India’s sustainability goals and commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

Sushasan Saptah: Celebrating Governance

Good Governance Day is part of a week-long observance known as Sushasan Saptah, which runs from December 19 to 25. During this period, the central government organizes various activities to promote the principles of efficient and transparent governance. These efforts aim to raise awareness about the importance of good governance and encourage both citizens and officials to work towards a more accountable and responsive government.

Good Governance Day is more than just a tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It serves as a reminder of his vision for India’s governance—one that prioritizes the needs of the people and fosters transparency and accountability at all levels. Through these initiatives, the day continues to inspire positive changes in governance and the delivery of services across the nation.

Chaudhary Charan Singh, born on December 23, 1902, in Noorpur, Uttar Pradesh, was a towering figure in Indian politics and a relentless advocate for farmers. His birthday is celebrated as National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas) in India to honor his unparalleled contributions to the agricultural sector and his commitment to rural development.

Early Life and Education

Born into a humble farming family, Charan Singh was deeply connected to the struggles of rural India from an early age. He pursued a degree in law from Agra University and practiced as a lawyer, but his passion for social justice led him to join the Indian freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

Political Career Focused on Farmers

Charan Singh entered politics to champion the rights of farmers and peasants, focusing on land reforms and rural upliftment. He was instrumental in drafting the Zamindari Abolition Act (1950), which dismantled the exploitative landlord system, giving land ownership to millions of farmers.

Other key contributions include:

Debt Redemption Bill: Protecting farmers from exploitation by moneylenders.

Advocacy for Land Reform Acts in Uttar Pradesh, which redistributed land to small and marginal farmers.

Promoting policies to make India’s rural economy self-reliant.

Tenure as Prime Minister

Chaudhary Charan Singh served as India’s fifth Prime Minister from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980. Though his tenure was brief, his policies were focused on addressing the challenges faced by farmers, including better credit facilities, price support mechanisms, and rural infrastructure.

Legacy and National Farmers’ Day

Charan Singh’s vision and policies earned him the title “Champion of Indian Farmers”. Recognizing his immense contributions, the Government of India declared his birth anniversary, December 23, as National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas).

Why National Farmers’ Day?
National Farmers’ Day celebrates the backbone of India’s economy—farmers, who contribute 18.3% to the nation’s GDP and employ 42.6% of its workforce. By honoring Charan Singh on this day, the nation underscores the importance of rural development and the need to empower the farming community.

Challenges Farmers Face Today

Despite the progress inspired by Charan Singh’s reforms, Indian farmers still face challenges like:

Small landholdings: Over 86% of farmers own less than 2 hectares of land.

Debt: Around 50% of farming households are in debt, with limited access to affordable credit.

Climate change: Unpredictable weather patterns and inadequate irrigation facilities affect crop yields.

Key Government Initiatives for Farmers

To uphold Charan Singh’s vision, the government has launched schemes such as:

PM-Kisan Yojana: ₹6,000 annual income support for small farmers.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana: Insurance against crop loss.

eNAM: An online trading platform for better market access.

Kisan Credit Card: Short-term loans at subsidized rates.

Honoring Farmers and Charan Singh

National Farmers’ Day is celebrated with events, seminars, and awards to recognize innovative farmers and raise awareness about sustainable agriculture. It’s a day to remember Charan Singh’s vision of empowering the rural economy and ensuring farmers’ prosperity.

Conclusion

Chaudhary Charan Singh’s birthday is not just a day to honor his legacy but a reminder of the crucial role farmers play in India’s economy and society. By celebrating National Farmers’ Day, we pay tribute to a leader whose policies transformed rural India and commit to continuing his mission of strengthening agriculture for a brighter future.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], December 17: In a significant development for both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal (PKC) project’s ‘Nadi Jodo Abhiyan’ would be signed today. The project, which falls under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to benefit a total of 24 districts—11 in Madhya Pradesh and 13 in Rajasthan—by providing access to drinking water and water for irrigation.

Speaking to the media, CM Yadav described the signing of the MoU as a historic moment for both states. He emphasized that the project, which will be backed by a government investment of Rs 17,000 crores, will have a transformative impact on the lives of the residents in the affected regions. The project aims to provide critical water resources for drinking and irrigation purposes, alleviating water scarcity issues that have plagued several districts.

“Today will be a historic day for MP and Rajasthan. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an MoU of the Parvati-Chambal-Kalisindh (PKC) project’s ‘Nadi Jodo Abhiyan’ is going to be signed. This project will benefit 11 districts in Madhya Pradesh and 13 districts in Rajasthan by ensuring a steady supply of drinking water and irrigation water,” said CM Yadav.

The project is seen as a major step towards improving water management and ensuring sustainable water supply for agricultural and domestic use. CM Yadav highlighted that the agreement between the two states had been delayed for 20 years during the tenure of the Congress government, leading to years of missed opportunities. He regretted the lost time but expressed optimism about the future.

“Water is a gift from God, but when managed properly by the government, it benefits society at large. The agreement between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh was delayed for two decades by the Congress government, but now we have made the crucial decision to move forward. The time for change has arrived,” CM Yadav remarked.

The districts to benefit from the ‘Nadi Jodo Abhiyan’ include Sheopur, Morena, Shivpuri, Guna, Ashok Nagar, as well as regions in western Madhya Pradesh such as Agar, Indore, Ujjain, Shajapur, and Rajgarh. These areas will now have a reliable source of drinking water and improved irrigation systems, which are expected to boost agricultural productivity and improve the quality of life for the local population.

On the occasion, CM Yadav extended his greetings to everyone involved in the project and celebrated the long-awaited milestone that promises to bring lasting benefits to the region.

New Delhi [India], December 17: Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is set to introduce the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha today, marking a key step towards implementing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative. The bill seeks to enable simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies nationwide, a move aimed at streamlining the electoral process.

In addition to the main bill, the law minister is expected to introduce amendments to several laws, including the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. These proposed amendments aim to align assembly elections in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and Puducherry with the plan for concurrent elections.

The Union Cabinet had already approved the recommendations of a High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections in September, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee’s report suggested a phased approach to implementing simultaneous elections: the first phase would involve synchronizing the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, while the second phase would see local body elections (panchayats and municipal elections) held within 100 days of the general elections. The committee also recommended adopting a common electoral roll for all elections.

The bill has sparked a significant political debate. While parties in the BJP-led NDA alliance have supported the proposal, arguing that it will save time, reduce election-related costs, and streamline the electoral process, opposition parties, particularly from the INDIA bloc, have voiced strong opposition.

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh raised concerns over the practicality of the proposal. He questioned what would happen if a state government falls within a short period, such as six months after the elections. He argued that the state might be left without a government for the remainder of the term, which he deemed impractical in the current political environment. He noted that state governments have historically not completed their five-year terms, with some falling within 2.5 to 3 years.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh also expressed strong opposition, demanding that the bill be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further discussions. He argued that the bill could undermine democracy, a position previously articulated by party president Mallikarjun Kharge in a letter to the former President Ram Nath Kovind’s committee on ‘One Nation, One Election.’

On December 12, the Union Cabinet approved the bill, clearing the way for its introduction in Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the decision as a crucial step in strengthening India’s democracy. The introduction of the bill is expected to set the stage for further debates and discussions in the coming days.

Wayanad [Kerala], December 1 : Newly elected Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is on a two-day visit to Kerala after her maiden electoral win, will address joint public meetings with her brother and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in the district on Sunday.

The public gatherings will be held at three locations in the district: Mananthavady at 10:30 am, Sulthan Bathery at 12:15 pm, and Kalpetta at 1:30 pm, as confirmed by party leaders. These meetings are part of her ongoing visit to Kerala following her victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll.

On the first day of her visit, Priyanka, accompanied by Rahul Gandhi, participated in public meetings at Mukkam in Thiruvambadi, Kaulai in Nikambur, Wandoor, and Edavanna in the Kozhikode and Malappuram districts on Saturday.

The Wayanad constituency, which Priyanka represents, comprises seven assembly segments: Mananthavady (ST), Sulthan Bathery (ST), and Kalpetta in Wayanad district; Thiruvambady in Kozhikode district; and Eranad, Nilambur, and Wandoor in Malappuram district.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured her maiden electoral victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll with a massive margin of 4,10,931 votes, which surpassed the lead her brother Rahul Gandhi had earned when he won from the constituency in the general elections earlier this year.
