The Indian retail sector saw a modest 5 percent growth in sales during December 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to the latest findings from the Retailers Association of India (RAI). The 55th Retail Business Survey, released on January 27, highlights regional disparities and consumer behavior trends that are shaping the retail landscape.

South India led the way with a 6 percent increase in sales, outperforming other regions. West and North India each experienced a 5 percent rise, while East India lagged behind with a more modest 4 percent growth. These variations reflect both regional preferences and differing economic factors affecting consumer spending across the country.

Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of RAI, explained that while the 5 percent growth is a positive sign, overall consumption remains subdued. Factors such as inflation and ongoing financial obligations, including EMIs, continue to impact discretionary spending. However, the wedding season provided a boost to certain sectors like apparel and jewellery, which saw increased demand.

The survey also noted that quick-service restaurants (QSRs) showed the most significant growth among retail categories, registering a 10 percent increase in sales. This surge in the QSR sector suggests a shift in consumer priorities, with food consumption taking precedence as people adjust to economic pressures.

Other notable categories experiencing growth included apparel, food and grocery, and sports goods, each registering a 7 percent rise. The jewellery sector also saw a 3 percent increase, hinting at a rise in discretionary spending on luxury goods, while consumer durables and electronics showed more modest growth at 2 percent.

Interestingly, while the footwear sector posted a more modest 3 percent increase, the sports goods category surged with an 8 percent growth. Beauty, wellness, and personal care items also fared well, with a 6 percent increase in sales, reflecting ongoing consumer interest in self-care.

Despite the overall subdued consumption, there are signs of recovery, particularly in the QSR segment. Retailers are hoping that the upcoming Union Budget will bring measures to address inflation and restore consumer confidence, which could further stimulate spending in the months ahead.

As the retail sector continues to navigate these challenging times, the data suggests that consumers are becoming more selective in their spending, focusing on areas where they see tangible value. Retailers are likely to adapt their strategies accordingly, especially as the festive season approaches, aiming to capture the attention of a cautious yet still-spending consumer base.
