In a significant move to bolster ties between India and Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto engaged in high-level talks at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, on Saturday. Their discussions marked a pivotal step in reinforcing the bilateral relationship, focusing on key areas such as cybersecurity, maritime security, counter-terrorism, and cultural cooperation.

During the meeting, both leaders exchanged several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that aimed to enhance collaboration in sectors including health, digital infrastructure, defense, and technology. One of the main highlights was the emphasis on strengthening cooperation in the fields of Fintech, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital public infrastructure.

Prime Minister Modi underscored Indonesia’s critical role as a key partner within the ASEAN framework and in the Indo-Pacific region. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to ASEAN’s centrality, a theme consistent with India’s ‘Act East’ policy, which seeks to strengthen ties with the countries of East and Southeast Asia. “Indonesia is an important partner for us in ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific regions, and we both agree that freedom of navigation should be ensured in accordance with international laws,” Modi remarked.

Looking forward, the year 2025 will be celebrated as the India-ASEAN Year of Tourism, with a focus on fostering greater cultural exchanges and promoting tourism between India and Indonesia. The two leaders also expressed their shared desire to maintain peace, security, prosperity, and the rule of law in the region.

Reflecting on the historical bond between the two nations, Prime Minister Modi highlighted Indonesia’s role as the Chief Guest at India’s first Republic Day in 1950. “As we celebrate 75 years of the Republic, it is a matter of great pride that Indonesia is part of this historic occasion,” Modi said.

Economic cooperation was also a key point of focus, with bilateral trade surpassing $30 billion last year. The leaders discussed enhanced collaborations in the fields of energy, critical minerals, science, technology, and space exploration. In particular, maritime safety and security were underscored, with a commitment to strengthening capacity-building, crime prevention, and search-and-rescue operations in the region.

Cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and de-radicalization efforts were also central to the talks. The partnership aims to address growing security challenges in the Indo-Pacific by fostering stronger defense ties and collaborative security frameworks.

On the cultural front, both leaders spoke about the long-standing historical connections between India and Indonesia, particularly through the shared epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, and India’s contribution to the conservation of Indonesia’s Prambanan Hindu Temple. The strengthening of cultural exchanges will serve as a bridge for further deepening bilateral ties.

Further reinforcing the strategic relationship, President Prabowo Subianto expressed gratitude for India’s unwavering support in Indonesia’s independence struggle and India’s continued support for Indonesia’s membership in BRICS. He emphasized that both nations are aligned in their commitment to global stability and regional cooperation, and he reiterated that the partnership would benefit the broader Global South.

The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their shared commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, setting the stage for a deeper and more dynamic India-Indonesia partnership in the years to come.

In a gesture of goodwill, President Prabowo also noted the Indonesian Embassy in India is located on land generously donated by the Indian government, highlighting the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations. He further expressed his honor in being invited as the Chief Guest for India’s 76th Republic Day, reflecting the warm ties that continue to flourish between the countries.

This strengthened partnership signals a new chapter in India-Indonesia relations, one poised to address both contemporary challenges and future opportunities on the global stage.

Washington, DC [US], January 20: Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, expressed her pleasure over the invitation extended to the Foreign Ministers of the Quad countries — India, the US, Australia, and Japan — to attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. In her remarks, Wong underscored that this gesture symbolized a “collective commitment” among the nations to the Quad alliance, reinforcing the importance of close cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Speaking at a press conference in Washington, DC, Wong reflected on her meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, held prior to Trump’s inauguration. She noted, “Quad Foreign Ministers are also here in DC for the inauguration. I had the opportunity to meet with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and the Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya ahead of the inauguration. We’re really pleased at the invitation extended to Quad Foreign Ministers. It’s a demonstration of the collective commitment of all countries to the Quad, an iron-clad commitment in this time where close cooperation in the Indo-Pacific is so important.”

Looking ahead, Wong mentioned her plans to meet with members of the Trump administration and Congress in the coming days. “Australia is here, again, from day one to pursue our shared interests and to deliver for both our peoples,” she added, reinforcing Australia’s continued engagement with the US government.

Wong also expressed her honor at being the first Australian Foreign Minister to be invited to a US Presidential inauguration. She highlighted that Australia’s invitation to this significant event, one of only a few foreign governments to receive it, symbolized the enduring alliance between the two nations. “I am so honoured to be the first Australian Foreign Minister who has been invited to a presidential inauguration,” she said. “We are one of only a small handful of foreign governments to receive this invitation, a demonstration of the steadfast alliance between Australia and the United States, an alliance, a relationship, bound by a long history of cooperation, shared ambitions, and enduring respect between our peoples.”

As part of her visit, Wong also mentioned her intention to meet with Marco Rubio, the nominee for US Secretary of State, to discuss further enhancing the strong economic and security partnership between Australia and the United States. She emphasized the critical nature of this alliance for both countries, especially in contributing to Australia’s defense, security, and economic prosperity.

“The alliance is critical to both our nations and is critical to our region,” Wong said. “It is critical because of its contribution to Australia’s defence, Australia’s security and, of course, Australia’s economic prosperity. The US is our closest global partner. It is our most important strategic relationship.”

The Quad partnership, involving Australia, India, Japan, and the United States, is committed to supporting a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. This cooperation aims to ensure a stable and resilient regional order, a vision shared by all four countries, as outlined by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

On January 19, Jaishankar also met with Penny Wong in Washington, DC, sharing his positive sentiments about their discussions. “Delighted to meet FM Penny Wong, a Quad colleague, in Washington DC today. As always, enjoyed our discussion on the state of the world,” he posted on social media.

The Quad alliance continues to gain prominence as a strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific, with each member nation reinforcing its commitment to regional stability and prosperity.

Jakarta, Indonesia – On January 15, the Indian Navy’s indigenous guided missile destroyer, INS Mumbai, arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia, to participate in the fourth edition of the multi-national maritime exercise La Perouse. The exercise, which includes naval forces from nine nations, aims to enhance cooperation in maritime security, operational interoperability, and information sharing.

Participating nations in this prestigious exercise include India, France, Indonesia, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, and Canada. The exercise will focus on a range of critical maritime operations, including maritime surveillance, interdiction, air operations, and progressive training scenarios. The goal is to foster enhanced cooperation and mutual understanding between these like-minded navies in an effort to develop common maritime situational awareness and improve tactical interoperability.

According to a Ministry of Defence press release, the La Perouse exercise will witness an array of advanced and complex multi-domain drills, including surface warfare, anti-air warfare, air defense, cross-deck landings, and tactical maneuvers. Additionally, constabulary missions such as Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations will be conducted. This diverse set of exercises provides an invaluable platform for the participating navies to develop closer ties, improve coordination, and refine their operational capabilities.

INS Mumbai, which has been deployed on a mission, is a highly capable warship designed and built indigenously in India. Its participation underscores India’s growing naval prowess and commitment to enhancing maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The Indian Navy’s involvement in La Perouse is a testament to its dedication to promoting a rules-based international order in the maritime domain, and to reinforcing synergies between the navies of partner nations.

The exercise also presents an opportunity to exchange best practices and deepen collaboration among nations that share a common interest in maintaining a secure and stable maritime environment. A post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Indian Navy spokesperson highlighted the significance of La Perouse in strengthening the long-standing cooperation between the participating countries, and noted that the exercise would involve advanced-level exercises across all three domains of maritime warfare.

This multi-national naval exercise is aligned with India’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), which emphasizes the importance of a safe, secure, and stable Indo-Pacific region. By enhancing maritime cooperation, the participating nations are contributing to the broader goals of regional peace and stability.

The La Perouse exercise offers a unique opportunity for navies to engage in high-level, multi-domain warfare scenarios, ensuring the readiness of their forces while fostering greater ties between maritime partners. It is a clear demonstration of the shared commitment among these nations to uphold the principles of freedom of navigation, maritime security, and the collective pursuit of peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

INS Mumbai’s participation in La Perouse underscores the growing strategic partnerships within the Indo-Pacific, marking a significant step toward the strengthening of India’s role in securing a peaceful and prosperous maritime future.

New Delhi, January 16, 2025 – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to visit India on January 25-26, 2025, at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his visit, President Subianto will be the esteemed chief guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations, marking a significant milestone in Indo-Indonesian relations.

This marks President Subianto’s first state visit to India since assuming the presidency in October 2024, following his inauguration. His visit highlights the deepening ties between the two nations, which have shared a long history of friendship and cooperation across various domains.

According to a statement by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), “India and Indonesia share warm and friendly ties spanning over millennia. As a Comprehensive Strategic Partner, Indonesia is an important pillar in India’s Act East Policy and our vision of the Indo-Pacific.” This reflects the strategic importance of Indonesia in India’s foreign policy, especially in the context of regional and global dynamics.

The visit is expected to provide a platform for both leaders to review the progress of bilateral relations and discuss issues of mutual concern, both in regional and global contexts. The two countries are also celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations, further emphasizing the enduring strength of their partnership.

Prime Minister Modi and President Subianto previously met during the G20 Summit in Rio in 2024, where they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship within the framework of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both leaders expressed their desire to celebrate the 75-year milestone in a fitting manner, reinforcing their dedication to deepening cooperation across various sectors.

President Subianto has been a key figure in Indonesia’s leadership, having assumed office in October 2024 following a successful election campaign.
