The UAE Ministry of Economy has launched a new “Green Intellectual Property” (IP) roadmap aimed at driving innovation, technology localisation, and advancing sustainability efforts. This three-month initiative is designed to enhance the UAE’s IP landscape, supporting the country’s transition to a circular economy and bolstering its position as a global leader in sustainable innovation.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, highlighted that this roadmap aligns with the nation’s vision to foster a sustainable economy. He emphasized that the initiative reflects the UAE’s forward-thinking approach to adopting green technologies and innovation, thereby enhancing the nation’s attractiveness to sustainable solutions.

This new roadmap will be implemented in collaboration with local environmental stakeholders and the World Intellectual Property Organisation, with a focus on encouraging inventors and creators to develop eco-friendly innovations. Additionally, it coincides with the UAE’s Innovation Month, further emphasizing the importance of sustainability in driving national progress.

The roadmap outlines several key objectives, including accelerating the registration of patents related to sustainable technologies and eco-friendly innovations. The Ministry of Economy aims to increase the share of patent registrations for sustainable innovations to 8% of total patent filings in the UAE.

Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, reiterated the UAE’s commitment to supporting sustainability across economic sectors. He highlighted the role of the new roadmap in promoting the adoption of advanced digital solutions and technologies to create products and services that benefit environmental conservation.

The roadmap also aims to strengthen legal frameworks to protect patents related to environmental sustainability, further enhancing the UAE’s competitive position in the Global Innovation Index (GII). With a robust IP and innovation framework in place, the UAE continues to maintain its regional leadership in embracing eco-friendly initiatives and solutions.

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 in Davos, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw presented India’s ambitious vision for global collaboration, innovation, and sustainable development. On January 22, 2025, during his engagement in Switzerland, the Minister highlighted India’s progress in various sectors, particularly in the railway and semiconductor industries, while emphasizing the growing international interest in “Made-in-India” products.

The day’s activities began in Zurich, where Minister Vaishnaw participated in discussions with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). During this session, the latest advancements in infrastructure diagnostics were presented, showcasing the Swiss expertise that could potentially aid in improving India’s railway operations. Vaishnaw met with Swiss railway experts, exploring technologies to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and infrastructure within the Indian Railway system.

The Minister’s visit also included meetings with leading small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the railway sector, such as Rhomberg Sersa Ag, Selectron, Ucentrics, Autech, and nu Glass. These discussions focused on fostering partnerships and exploring technology transfer opportunities, particularly in the development of smart railway solutions and sustainable manufacturing practices that align with India’s modernization goals.

A significant highlight of the day was Vaishnaw’s meeting with Stadler Rail Management. The Minister visited the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in St. Margrethen, where Stadler Rail’s expertise in producing advanced double-decker multiple-unit trains was presented. This aligns with India’s ambitious plan to modernize and expand its passenger rail fleet, enhancing the transportation network’s efficiency and sustainability.

Another notable moment of the visit was a presentation by Minister Vaishnaw on the Indian Semiconductor Ecosystem to Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO of IBM. This interaction underscored India’s strategic focus on building a robust semiconductor industry, positioning the country as a key player in global technology innovation.

India’s participation at the WEF 2025 also underscores the country’s growing economic influence. The India Pavilion at the event showcases investment opportunities from eight Indian states—Kerala, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and West Bengal. These states aim to attract global business leaders and investors, highlighting India’s diverse economic landscape.

The WEF 2025 theme, “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age,” resonates with India’s vision of fostering international partnerships that drive technological innovation, economic growth, and sustainability. Over 350 global leaders, including 60 heads of state and government, are in attendance, marking the importance of this annual gathering in shaping the future of the global economy.

With India sending its largest-ever delegation to Davos, consisting of five union ministers, three state chief ministers, and nearly 100 CEOs, the nation’s growing role on the global stage is clear. As India continues to embrace innovative technologies and global collaboration, it is positioning itself as a key driver of change in the global economy.

Jagdeep Singh, the former CEO of Quantumscape, has set an unprecedented benchmark for executive pay with an astonishing annual salary of Rs 17,500 crore (approximately $2.06 billion). This makes him the highest-paid person globally, with an average daily income of Rs 48 crore, according to The Times of India. Singh’s remarkable earnings surpass the revenues of several large corporations, establishing him as one of the most influential leaders in the world of innovation and technology.

The Journey Behind the Milestone

Jagdeep Singh’s success story is a testament to the power of vision, education, and entrepreneurial drive. Singh’s academic journey includes a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Maryland, followed by a master’s degree from Stanford University and an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. His career began in esteemed companies such as HP and Sun Microsystems, which laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial endeavors. In 1992, Singh founded AirSoft, marking the beginning of his startup ventures.

Singh’s most notable achievement came in 2010 when he founded Quantumscape, a company at the forefront of developing cutting-edge battery technology for electric vehicles (EVs). Quantumscape focuses on creating fast-charging, long-lasting, and safer batteries that aim to transform the energy storage industry and support a decarbonized future. Under his leadership, Quantumscape saw significant growth, with Singh’s compensation package, including stock options, reportedly valued at $2.3 billion.

Leadership Transition at Quantumscape

In February 2024, Singh transitioned from his role as CEO of Quantumscape to become the chairman of the company’s board, passing the reins to Siva Sivaram. Singh’s LinkedIn profile reflects his new journey, as he took on the title of CEO of a Stealth Startup, signaling exciting new ventures in the innovation and technology space.

What Is Quantumscape?

Quantumscape is a pioneering US-based company specializing in advanced battery technology, with a particular focus on electric vehicles (EVs). Founded in 2010 by Jagdeep Singh, the company’s mission is to revolutionize energy storage through the development of solid-state batteries. These next-generation batteries eliminate the liquid electrolyte found in traditional lithium-ion batteries, offering faster charging times, higher energy density, and improved safety features. Quantumscape’s innovations are a key part of the solution to challenges like range anxiety and slow charging times for EVs.

Quantumscape’s vision for a decarbonized future is supported by its groundbreaking battery technologies, which aim to provide sustainable energy solutions. The company has attracted major investors, including Volkswagen, and is recognized as a leading player in the electric vehicle battery revolution.

With his extraordinary achievements, Jagdeep Singh’s story continues to inspire entrepreneurs and innovators around the globe, leaving a lasting impact on the future of energy storage and sustainable technologies.

New Delhi [India], December 25: India has emerged as a global powerhouse in innovation and entrepreneurship, with more than 73,000 startups featuring at least one woman director, as highlighted by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. These startups, recognised under the Startup India initiative, account for nearly half of the 1,57,066 government-supported startups, reflecting the pivotal role women are playing in driving India’s entrepreneurial success.

India: A Thriving Startup Hub

India has firmly established itself as the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, with over 100 unicorns shaping the landscape of innovation. Cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi-NCR have become hotspots of entrepreneurial activity, fostering a culture of creativity and problem-solving.

This vibrant ecosystem owes much of its success to several key factors:

Affordable Internet: Access to low-cost internet has enabled millions of people to join the digital economy.

Young Workforce: A dynamic and skilled workforce is fueling innovation across various sectors like fintech, edtech, health-tech, and e-commerce.

Leveraging Emerging Technologies

Startups in India are increasingly utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT). These advancements are helping address both local and global challenges, creating solutions that impact lives positively.

According to the “Indian Startup Ecosystem Report” by Startup India, the integration of emerging technologies has enabled startups to tackle grassroots issues while also expanding into global markets.

Government Support for Entrepreneurship

The Indian government has played a crucial role in nurturing the startup ecosystem. Initiatives such as the flagship Startup India programme, launched in 2016, have provided comprehensive support for budding entrepreneurs. Key highlights of government support include:

Ease of Doing Business: Simplified regulations to encourage entrepreneurship.

Tax Benefits: Incentives to ease financial burdens on startups.

Funding Support: Financial assistance to help startups scale.

Sector-Specific Policies: Tailored policies to boost innovation in key sectors.

The Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) platform, along with programs like the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI), provide critical infrastructure and financial backing for innovators.

Furthermore, the SAMRIDH scheme, introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in 2021, aims to accelerate the growth of 300 software product startups with funding of up to ₹40 lakh per startup over four years.

Success Stories of Indian Startups

The global success of companies like BYJU’S, Zomato, Ola, and Nykaa underscores India’s ability to scale and compete on an international stage. Many of these startups have expanded their operations worldwide, showcasing the innovative potential of Indian entrepreneurs.

Moreover, the influence of Indian-origin startups in Silicon Valley reflects the country’s growing prominence in the global startup ecosystem. Indian startups are also increasingly collaborating with global corporations and entering international markets, as noted in the Startup India International Guide.

A Vision for the Future

India’s leadership in affordable technology solutions, such as UPI and Aadhaar-enabled services, is inspiring similar innovations worldwide. Indian unicorns are not only keeping pace with global peers but often outpacing them in valuation growth, proving the resilience and scalability of the ecosystem.

As the Ministry of Commerce & Industry highlighted, the foundation of India’s startup ecosystem is robust, scalable, and poised to lead the world in innovation. With women playing a significant role in this transformation, India’s startup story is one of inclusivity, resilience, and groundbreaking success.

India’s e-commerce landscape is undergoing a seismic shift in 2024, with quick commerce (Q-commerce) emerging as the next big frontier. Companies like Swiggy, Flipkart, Myntra, Amazon, Tata, Nykaa, Zomato, and Zepto are locked in a fierce battle to dominate this burgeoning sector. Rapid innovation, expanded offerings, and hefty investments are fueling an unprecedented wave of growth that promises to redefine the way Indians shop.

The Rise of Quick Commerce

Quick commerce, or Q-commerce, refers to ultra-fast delivery services, often within 10 to 30 minutes. This model has gained significant traction due to India’s urban population, which increasingly values speed and convenience. Unlike traditional e-commerce, where delivery timelines often range from a day to a week, Q-commerce aims to fulfill customers’ needs almost instantaneously. This agility has made it particularly appealing for essentials like groceries, medicines, and household items.

The sector has seen meteoric growth, spurred by urbanization, rising internet penetration, and shifting consumer behavior. According to industry reports, the Indian Q-commerce market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 25% through the next few years, with 2024 marking a pivotal year in this trajectory.

Major Players Driving Innovation

India’s leading e-commerce and food delivery giants are at the forefront of this revolution, leveraging their vast resources and technological capabilities to meet evolving customer expectations.

Swiggy Instamart: Swiggy’s Instamart has been a game-changer in the quick commerce segment, focusing on delivering groceries and daily essentials within minutes. The platform continues to expand its reach and assortment, integrating advanced inventory management and AI-driven algorithms to ensure operational efficiency.

Zepto: A trailblazer in the Q-commerce domain, Zepto made its mark by promising delivery within 10 minutes. Its innovative micro-warehouse model and laser-focused execution have set benchmarks in speed and reliability.

Flipkart and Myntra: Walmart-owned Flipkart and its fashion arm Myntra are investing heavily in faster delivery options for electronics, fashion, and lifestyle products. Flipkart’s recent initiatives, including dark stores and regional hubs, are designed to reduce delivery times significantly.

Amazon India: Amazon’s Prime service has long been synonymous with speedy delivery. However, in 2024, Amazon India is doubling down on Q-commerce by expanding its ‘Amazon Fresh’ and ‘Prime Now’ offerings, covering more cities and adding new product categories.

Tata and Nykaa: Legacy brands like Tata and beauty e-commerce leader Nykaa are also jumping on the Q-commerce bandwagon. Tata’s super-app initiative integrates quick delivery for its diverse portfolio, while Nykaa is focusing on rapid beauty and wellness product deliveries.

Zomato: Known for its food delivery services, Zomato is diversifying its offerings to include groceries and daily essentials through Zomato Market, targeting quick deliveries to maintain its competitive edge.

Key Trends Shaping Quick Commerce

The rapid evolution of quick commerce in India is driven by several key trends:

Ultra-Fast Delivery: The promise of deliveries within 10-30 minutes has become the cornerstone of Q-commerce. Companies are investing in micro-warehousing, predictive inventory stocking, and route optimization technologies to meet these ambitious timelines.

Expanded Product Categories: While groceries remain the mainstay, Q-commerce players are expanding their product assortments to include beauty products, medicines, electronics, and even fashion items.

Tech-Driven Solutions: AI and machine learning are being leveraged for demand forecasting, real-time inventory tracking, and last-mile delivery optimization. These technologies ensure a seamless shopping experience for customers.

Sustainability: With rapid deliveries come environmental concerns. Companies are exploring eco-friendly packaging, optimizing delivery routes, and adopting electric vehicles to reduce their carbon footprint.

Hyperlocal Focus: Q-commerce thrives on proximity. Companies are setting up dark stores and micro-fulfillment centers in densely populated urban areas to minimize delivery times.

Challenges in Quick Commerce

Despite its promise, quick commerce is not without challenges.

Operational Complexity: Meeting ultra-fast delivery timelines requires a robust supply chain, precise inventory management, and an extensive delivery network. Ensuring all these elements work in harmony is a significant challenge.

High Costs: The infrastructure needed for Q-commerce—from micro-warehouses to delivery personnel—requires substantial investment. Balancing speed with profitability remains a pressing concern for companies.

Regulatory Hurdles: The fast-paced nature of Q-commerce has drawn scrutiny regarding labor practices, road safety, and environmental impact. Companies must navigate these regulatory challenges to ensure sustainable growth.

Consumer Expectations: While customers value speed, maintaining product quality and service reliability is crucial. Even a small slip-up can lead to dissatisfied customers and negative reviews.

The Investment Boom

The competition in India’s Q-commerce space is heating up, with companies securing substantial investments to fuel their ambitions. In 2024 alone, major players like Zepto, Swiggy, and Zomato have raised millions of dollars to expand their operations and enhance their technological capabilities. These investments are being channeled into:

Setting up more dark stores and fulfillment centers.

Upgrading logistics and delivery infrastructure.

Integrating advanced technologies like AI and IoT for better efficiency.

Consumer Impact

For consumers, the rise of quick commerce is a game-changer. The convenience of having daily essentials, groceries, and even luxury items delivered within minutes is redefining shopping norms. Moreover, the competitive landscape ensures better service quality, frequent discounts, and a broader range of options for customers.

However, this convenience comes with a caveat. Consumers must remain mindful of over-reliance on instant gratification and consider the environmental and social impact of their purchasing behaviors.

The Road Ahead

As 2024 unfolds, quick commerce in India is poised for even greater growth. With technological advancements, increasing investments, and evolving consumer preferences, the sector is set to reach new heights. However, success will hinge on companies striking a balance between speed, efficiency, and sustainability.

India’s Q-commerce revolution is not just about faster deliveries; it’s about reimagining convenience for a digital-first generation. As players like Swiggy, Flipkart, Amazon, and Zepto continue to innovate, the race to dominate this dynamic market will only intensify. For consumers and businesses alike, the future of shopping has never been this exciting.
