New Delhi, January 16 – The Indian Embassy in Japan is currently celebrating ‘Assam Week,’ an initiative aimed at highlighting the rich heritage and immense economic potential of the northeastern state of Assam. This event also seeks to underscore Assam’s significant contributions to various sectors, including education, industry, agriculture, and security, both within India and internationally.

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to express his gratitude towards the Indian Embassy in Japan for their enthusiastic participation in the week-long celebration. In his message, Sarma emphasized that Assam Week was not only an opportunity to celebrate the state’s cultural heritage but also to showcase its growing significance in areas like education, industrial development, and security.

“Indian Embassies are celebrating Assam Week to showcase the State’s rich heritage & our potential to become a leading State in India with concerted efforts in education, industry, security and agriculture. Gratitude to India in Japan for enthusiastically celebrating this week,” the Chief Minister said.

Focus on Key Sectors:

The celebration, which began on Wednesday, featured a special focus on Assam’s promising electronics and semiconductor sectors. The embassy’s efforts to highlight these industries are particularly timely, given the recent developments in Assam’s technological landscape, such as the establishment of Tata’s semiconductor unit in Morigaon.

Today’s celebration shifted its focus to the state’s aerospace and defense sectors, recognizing Assam’s growing importance in these high-tech industries. The Indian Embassy’s celebrations provide a global platform to showcase the diverse opportunities the state offers for international collaborations and investments.

Tata Semiconductor Unit in Morigaon: A Game Changer

One of the standout features of Assam Week is the attention drawn to Assam’s expanding semiconductor industry. In February 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal for Tata’s semiconductor unit to be established in Morigaon, Assam. This high-tech facility, to be developed by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT), is set to be a major milestone for both Assam and the entire country.

The Morigaon unit will focus on developing advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, including flip-chip and Integrated System in Package (I-SIP) technologies, which are critical for key sectors like automotive (especially electric vehicles), communications, and network infrastructure. These cutting-edge technologies are poised to strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain, making it less dependent on foreign suppliers.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The Morigaon semiconductor project, with a massive investment of Rs 27,000 crores, is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits for Assam and the wider region. The unit will have the capacity to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day, a contribution that will greatly bolster the nation’s technological infrastructure.

The project is also expected to create thousands of job opportunities. Approximately 15,000 direct jobs and an additional 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs will be generated, providing a substantial economic boost to the local community and contributing to Assam’s broader economic growth.

A Bright Future for Assam

With initiatives like ‘Assam Week,’ the Indian Embassy in Japan is playing a crucial role in bridging the gap between Assam and global stakeholders. The state’s growing prominence in high-tech sectors, coupled with its rich cultural heritage and diverse resources, makes it an attractive destination for international investments and collaborations.

As Assam continues to chart its path toward becoming a leading state in India, the successful celebration of ‘Assam Week’ in Japan serves as a testament to the region’s potential to make a global impact in various fields, from agriculture and industry to education, defense, and technology.

Abu Dhabi, UAE – January 14, 2025: A historic milestone in international trade was reached today as UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon witnessed the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two nations. The ceremony took place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) and saw the signing of the agreement by Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, and Todd McClay, New Zealand Minister for Trade.

This new agreement is set to reduce trade barriers, streamline customs procedures, and foster increased private sector collaboration and investment between the two countries. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed highlighted that the agreement marks a significant addition to the UAE’s CEPA program, strengthening its connections with the Asia-Pacific region, one of the world’s most developed and open markets.

The UAE-New Zealand CEPA is built upon the growing economic ties between the two nations, with bilateral non-oil trade having reached USD 642 million in the first nine months of 2024, reflecting an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Sheikh Mohamed emphasized that the CEPA reflects the shared ambition of both countries to create resilient, future-ready economies powered by knowledge, innovation, and talent.

As part of the agreement, New Zealand will provide 100% duty-free access to all imports from the UAE, while the UAE will offer duty-free access to 98.5% of New Zealand products, with this figure set to rise to 99% within three years. This trade deal is expected to increase bilateral trade to USD 5 billion by 2032, tripling the five-year average trade of USD 1.5 billion between the two nations from 2019-2023.

This partnership is particularly significant as it marks New Zealand’s first trade agreement with a Middle Eastern nation, and it stands as one of the UAE’s most expansive CEPAs to date. The agreement covers a wide array of areas, including indigenous trade, sustainable development, women’s economic empowerment, and transparency. In addition to the CEPA, a Bilateral Investment Treaty aimed at promoting and protecting investments was also concluded, ensuring a stronger framework for increasing UAE-New Zealand investment ties across multiple sectors.

The UAE’s CEPA program, launched in September 2021, is a central part of the country’s economic growth strategy, which targets USD 1 trillion in total trade value by 2031 and aims to double the size of its economy to surpass USD 800 billion by 2031. To date, the program has resulted in agreements with nations across the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe, broadening access to markets that represent nearly a quarter of the world’s population.

This agreement solidifies the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its economic relations globally, with a particular focus on creating mutually beneficial partnerships that promote innovation, sustainability, and long-term economic growth.

New Delhi [India], January 3: The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced a historic achievement, recording the highest number of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in Asia and leading the world in equity capital raised in the primary market for the calendar year 2024.

In an unprecedented feat, NSE successfully hosted 268 IPOs, including 90 on the mainboard and 178 on the SME platform, raising a total of ₹1.67 lakh crore. This marks a significant milestone as the highest number of IPOs facilitated in a single calendar year, reflecting the growing confidence of global and domestic investors in India’s capital markets.

On the global stage, 2024 saw a total of 1,145 IPOs, slightly lower than the 1,271 recorded in 2023. Yet, India emerged as a leader, with NSE facilitating 268 IPOs, including Hyundai Motor India Ltd.’s landmark IPO worth USD 3.3 billion—the largest IPO in India’s history and the second-largest globally for the year.

For the SME segment, companies collectively raised ₹7,349 crore (USD 0.86 billion), showcasing the platform’s robust support for small and medium enterprises aiming to scale their operations.

Sriram Krishnan, Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO) of NSE, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “The record number of IPOs during this calendar year highlights the resilience and potential of the Indian economy. Companies across various sectors are recognizing the value of public markets to support their growth strategies.”

In a comparison with other leading Asian stock exchanges, such as Japan Exchange Group, Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and Shanghai Stock Exchange, Krishnan noted that NSE facilitated more IPOs than all of them combined, underlining India’s dominant position in the region.

Looking ahead to 2025, NSE has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its platform to enable higher capital raising and support for businesses. India’s thriving stock market is attracting an increasing number of companies eager to list their shares, many of which have already reaped significant returns post-listing.

For the uninitiated, an Initial Public Offering (IPO) is a process through which companies sell their shares to the public to raise equity capital from investors, often marking a pivotal step in their growth journey.

With such impressive achievements in 2024, NSE has cemented its role as a cornerstone of India’s economic growth and a key driver of global capital market activity.

New Delhi [India], January 2 – The Indian stock market has opened 2025 on a positive note, with the Sensex and Nifty both showing significant gains in the first two days of the year. As of the latest update, the Sensex stood at 79,752.03 points, climbing 1,244.62 points, or 1.59%, reflecting strong investor optimism.

Market experts have indicated that the upcoming Q3 earnings season will play a crucial role in determining the future direction of the markets. Attention is expected to shift to expectations surrounding the Union Budget and the policy decisions of the Trump 2.0 administration in the coming months. Ajay Bagga, a veteran banking and market expert, highlighted that the inauguration of “Trump 2.0” will be the most significant global event of January and possibly of the year.

In a boost to market sentiment, Gaurang Shah, Head Investment Strategist at financial services firm Geojit, pointed to strong advance tax collections, a stable GST collection performance, and a positive outlook for some sectors in Q3. However, he also anticipated some profit-taking as the rally progresses.

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in December reached Rs 1.76 lakh crore, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 7.3%. This pushed the total GST collection for the fiscal year 2024-25 to Rs 16.33 lakh crore, marking a 9.1% increase from the same period last year, when the figure stood at Rs 14.97 lakh crore.

The Indian stock market is experiencing its highest gains in two weeks, with significant contributions from the auto, tech, and financial services sectors, as noted by Kedia Advisory. Despite this, investor caution remains, especially with potential new tariff policies that may arise under Donald Trump’s presidency.

However, the Sensex still remains nearly 6,000 points below its all-time high of 85,978 points, and while 2024 saw both the Sensex and Nifty gaining 9-10%, it was a more modest year in comparison to the 16-17% rise in 2023. The market’s performance in 2022 was comparatively weaker, with only a 3% gain in both indices.

Challenges such as weak GDP growth, foreign fund outflows, rising food prices, and sluggish consumption dampened investor sentiment in 2024. Additionally, the Indian rupee is hovering near its all-time low, impacted by expectations of fewer rate cuts from the U.S. Federal Reserve, a widening trade deficit, and subdued economic growth seen in the first half of 2024-25.

As the market continues to ride this positive wave, all eyes are on the forthcoming corporate earnings and the unfolding global political landscape, which will likely influence the Indian stock market’s next moves.
