Ruby Dhalla, an India-origin leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, recently outlined a bold plan to deport illegal immigrants if elected as Prime Minister. As a candidate for the party leadership, Dhalla aims to replace Justin Trudeau and make immigration a key focus of her campaign. Her statement, made on January 22 during the launch of her candidacy, has sparked both support and controversy.

Born to Punjabi immigrants in Winnipeg, Dhalla has a diverse background, including a career in beauty pageants, acting, and entrepreneurship. She holds a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Prior to politics, she worked as a chiropractor and even starred in the Bollywood-inspired film ‘Kyon? Kis Liye?’.

Dhalla served as a Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2011, becoming the first Indian-origin woman to serve three consecutive terms. Now, she is looking to break new ground as Canada’s first woman of color to serve as Prime Minister.

In her video message on X, Dhalla expressed gratitude and emphasized the historic nature of her campaign to become the first woman of color to lead the country. Her political journey also saw her ranked in the top spots for attractiveness, including being named the third-sexiest female MP in a 2008 poll by Hill Times.

Apart from politics, Dhalla is the CEO and President of the Dhalla Group of Companies. She also made headlines as a 10-year-old when she wrote a letter to then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, expressing her concerns about the violence during Operation Blue Star. Gandhi responded personally and invited Dhalla to visit India, though she was assassinated before that could happen.

As part of her leadership campaign, Dhalla pledged to take a hard stance on immigration. She stated, “As Prime Minister, I will deport illegal immigrants and clamp down on human traffickers.” This promise has placed immigration reform at the forefront of her platform, drawing both praise and criticism.

Dhalla faces significant competition from other high-profile figures, such as Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland. Despite this, she is determined to offer a fresh approach and has outlined a vision of returning the Liberal Party to the center with practical solutions to Canada’s challenges. The winner of the Liberal Party leadership race will be announced on March 9.

The Congress party in Telangana is currently facing internal turmoil, with 10 of its MLAs holding a secret meeting at MLA Anirudh Reddy’s farmhouse in Gandipet, Hyderabad, ahead of the local body elections. The meeting was sparked by allegations of bribery involving two ministers, particularly Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, who is accused of demanding bribes to clear bills for contractors’ work.

The MLAs who attended the meeting include:

Naini Rajender Reddy

Bhoopathi Reddy

Yennam Srinivas Reddy

Murali Naik

Kuchakulla Rajesh Reddy

Sanjeev Reddy

Anirudh Reddy

Laxmi Kantha Rao

Donthi Madhava Reddy

Beerla Ilaiah

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, sensing growing unrest, is set to meet ministers at the Command Control Center to address the situation. Ponguleti, in response to the dissent, cancelled his Palair tour to attend the crucial meeting. In a strict directive, CM Reddy also ordered officials not to attend the ‘secret’ meeting, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.

The party high command is concerned that any further rebellion from MLAs could tarnish the party’s image ahead of the upcoming local body and MLC elections. CM Reddy has urged ministers to improve coordination with MLAs, prioritize their concerns, and address their recommendations.

However, Nagarkurnool MP Mallu Ravi downplayed the meeting, calling it just a dinner gathering and accusing opposition parties of exaggerating the issue. He clarified that the meeting took place at ITC Kohinoor and not a farmhouse, with the MLAs discussing a specific issue that required ministerial attention.

With Telangana gearing up for local body elections and MLC elections on February 27, the Congress party is in a delicate situation as it faces growing internal strife.

In a society where vulnerability is often mistaken for weakness, Brené Brown’s groundbreaking book, Daring Greatly, challenges us to rethink what it truly means to be strong. Published in 2012, this transformative work draws on over a decade of research to reveal how embracing vulnerability can lead to a more meaningful, courageous, and connected life.

What Is “Daring Greatly”?

The title Daring Greatly is inspired by a famous speech by Theodore Roosevelt, in which he praises “the man in the arena” who faces challenges head-on, regardless of failure. Brown uses this as a metaphor for living a life of authenticity and courage, even when it feels uncomfortable or risky.

At its core, Daring Greatly is a call to action: to show up, be seen, and embrace vulnerability as a strength rather than a liability. The book provides insights into how vulnerability impacts all areas of our lives—from parenting and relationships to workplace dynamics and self-esteem.

Key Lessons from the Book

Vulnerability Is Courage Brown argues that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but rather the most accurate measure of courage. Whether it’s expressing your feelings, admitting your mistakes, or taking creative risks, stepping into vulnerability is what allows us to grow and connect. As Brown states, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.”

Shame Is the Silent Killer One of the book’s most powerful themes is the concept of shame and its destructive impact on our lives. Brown defines shame as the fear of not being “enough”—whether it’s smart enough, successful enough, or lovable enough. She offers strategies to recognize and combat shame through self-compassion and empathy. “Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change,” Brown explains.

The Importance of Connection Brown emphasizes that human beings are wired for connection. Vulnerability is the key to forming deep and meaningful relationships, as it fosters trust, understanding, and mutual respect.

Perfectionism vs. Healthy Striving Many of us hide behind perfectionism as a way to avoid vulnerability. Brown distinguishes between perfectionism—an unattainable and harmful goal—and healthy striving, which is about improving ourselves without losing sight of our inherent worth.

Why This Book Matters Today

In an age dominated by social media and curated personas, Daring Greatly feels more relevant than ever. Brown’s message encourages us to step away from the pressure to appear “perfect” and instead embrace our flaws and humanity.

This is especially important in the workplace, where vulnerability can foster innovation and creativity. Leaders who dare greatly inspire their teams to take risks, voice ideas, and learn from failures without fear of judgment.

A Must-Read for All

Whether you’re a parent looking to raise resilient children, a leader seeking to build a stronger team, or an individual navigating personal struggles, Daring Greatly offers invaluable insights. Its blend of research-backed wisdom and relatable storytelling makes it an inspiring read for anyone ready to lead a braver, more authentic life.

Final Thoughts

Daring Greatly is not just a book; it’s a movement. It invites us to embrace vulnerability as the birthplace of creativity, love, and joy. As Brené Brown reminds us, the willingness to “dare greatly” can transform our lives and the lives of those around us.

So, are you ready to step into the arena?
