In a significant move to bolster ties between India and Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto engaged in high-level talks at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, on Saturday. Their discussions marked a pivotal step in reinforcing the bilateral relationship, focusing on key areas such as cybersecurity, maritime security, counter-terrorism, and cultural cooperation.

During the meeting, both leaders exchanged several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that aimed to enhance collaboration in sectors including health, digital infrastructure, defense, and technology. One of the main highlights was the emphasis on strengthening cooperation in the fields of Fintech, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital public infrastructure.

Prime Minister Modi underscored Indonesia’s critical role as a key partner within the ASEAN framework and in the Indo-Pacific region. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to ASEAN’s centrality, a theme consistent with India’s ‘Act East’ policy, which seeks to strengthen ties with the countries of East and Southeast Asia. “Indonesia is an important partner for us in ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific regions, and we both agree that freedom of navigation should be ensured in accordance with international laws,” Modi remarked.

Looking forward, the year 2025 will be celebrated as the India-ASEAN Year of Tourism, with a focus on fostering greater cultural exchanges and promoting tourism between India and Indonesia. The two leaders also expressed their shared desire to maintain peace, security, prosperity, and the rule of law in the region.

Reflecting on the historical bond between the two nations, Prime Minister Modi highlighted Indonesia’s role as the Chief Guest at India’s first Republic Day in 1950. “As we celebrate 75 years of the Republic, it is a matter of great pride that Indonesia is part of this historic occasion,” Modi said.

Economic cooperation was also a key point of focus, with bilateral trade surpassing $30 billion last year. The leaders discussed enhanced collaborations in the fields of energy, critical minerals, science, technology, and space exploration. In particular, maritime safety and security were underscored, with a commitment to strengthening capacity-building, crime prevention, and search-and-rescue operations in the region.

Cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and de-radicalization efforts were also central to the talks. The partnership aims to address growing security challenges in the Indo-Pacific by fostering stronger defense ties and collaborative security frameworks.

On the cultural front, both leaders spoke about the long-standing historical connections between India and Indonesia, particularly through the shared epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, and India’s contribution to the conservation of Indonesia’s Prambanan Hindu Temple. The strengthening of cultural exchanges will serve as a bridge for further deepening bilateral ties.

Further reinforcing the strategic relationship, President Prabowo Subianto expressed gratitude for India’s unwavering support in Indonesia’s independence struggle and India’s continued support for Indonesia’s membership in BRICS. He emphasized that both nations are aligned in their commitment to global stability and regional cooperation, and he reiterated that the partnership would benefit the broader Global South.

The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their shared commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, setting the stage for a deeper and more dynamic India-Indonesia partnership in the years to come.

In a gesture of goodwill, President Prabowo also noted the Indonesian Embassy in India is located on land generously donated by the Indian government, highlighting the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations. He further expressed his honor in being invited as the Chief Guest for India’s 76th Republic Day, reflecting the warm ties that continue to flourish between the countries.

This strengthened partnership signals a new chapter in India-Indonesia relations, one poised to address both contemporary challenges and future opportunities on the global stage.

In a significant show of unity, the Foreign Ministers of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States Secretary of State met in Washington DC on January 22, reaffirming the Quad alliance’s commitment to enhancing regional maritime, economic, technology, and supply chain security in the Indo-Pacific region. The meeting, held on the first day of the new U.S. administration under Secretary of State Marco Rubio, underscored the growing importance of this strategic partnership in addressing global challenges.

The Quad Foreign Ministers’ gathering emphasized the alliance’s firm dedication to upholding a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, with a strong focus on reinforcing the rule of law, democratic values, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The nations also expressed their opposition to any unilateral actions aimed at altering the region’s status quo through force or coercion, signaling a collective stance on safeguarding regional peace and stability.

A joint statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the Quad nations’ shared belief in the role of international law, economic opportunities, and security in fostering the development and prosperity of Indo-Pacific nations. “We strongly oppose any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion,” the statement emphasized.

As part of their collaboration, the four nations also pledged to boost regional maritime security, economic resilience, and technological advancements, while ensuring the reliability and robustness of global supply chains. The meeting marked a renewed commitment to addressing increasing regional threats, with the Quad members indicating their intent to continue advancing these efforts.

Looking ahead, the Quad nations plan to convene regularly in the coming months to prepare for the next Quad Leaders’ Summit, which will be hosted by India. This continuous dialogue is expected to foster stronger ties between the four nations and enhance their ability to respond to evolving challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Quad’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific has been seen as a critical factor in maintaining peace and security in the face of geopolitical tensions and emerging global threats. As these nations continue to deepen their cooperation, the region stands to benefit from a more secure, stable, and prosperous future.

Jakarta, Indonesia – On January 15, the Indian Navy’s indigenous guided missile destroyer, INS Mumbai, arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia, to participate in the fourth edition of the multi-national maritime exercise La Perouse. The exercise, which includes naval forces from nine nations, aims to enhance cooperation in maritime security, operational interoperability, and information sharing.

Participating nations in this prestigious exercise include India, France, Indonesia, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, and Canada. The exercise will focus on a range of critical maritime operations, including maritime surveillance, interdiction, air operations, and progressive training scenarios. The goal is to foster enhanced cooperation and mutual understanding between these like-minded navies in an effort to develop common maritime situational awareness and improve tactical interoperability.

According to a Ministry of Defence press release, the La Perouse exercise will witness an array of advanced and complex multi-domain drills, including surface warfare, anti-air warfare, air defense, cross-deck landings, and tactical maneuvers. Additionally, constabulary missions such as Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations will be conducted. This diverse set of exercises provides an invaluable platform for the participating navies to develop closer ties, improve coordination, and refine their operational capabilities.

INS Mumbai, which has been deployed on a mission, is a highly capable warship designed and built indigenously in India. Its participation underscores India’s growing naval prowess and commitment to enhancing maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The Indian Navy’s involvement in La Perouse is a testament to its dedication to promoting a rules-based international order in the maritime domain, and to reinforcing synergies between the navies of partner nations.

The exercise also presents an opportunity to exchange best practices and deepen collaboration among nations that share a common interest in maintaining a secure and stable maritime environment. A post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Indian Navy spokesperson highlighted the significance of La Perouse in strengthening the long-standing cooperation between the participating countries, and noted that the exercise would involve advanced-level exercises across all three domains of maritime warfare.

This multi-national naval exercise is aligned with India’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), which emphasizes the importance of a safe, secure, and stable Indo-Pacific region. By enhancing maritime cooperation, the participating nations are contributing to the broader goals of regional peace and stability.

The La Perouse exercise offers a unique opportunity for navies to engage in high-level, multi-domain warfare scenarios, ensuring the readiness of their forces while fostering greater ties between maritime partners. It is a clear demonstration of the shared commitment among these nations to uphold the principles of freedom of navigation, maritime security, and the collective pursuit of peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

INS Mumbai’s participation in La Perouse underscores the growing strategic partnerships within the Indo-Pacific, marking a significant step toward the strengthening of India’s role in securing a peaceful and prosperous maritime future.

In a significant move towards strengthening India’s defence sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dedicated three frontline naval combatants — INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer — to the nation. The commissioning ceremony, held at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, was attended by prominent dignitaries including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, among others.

These three state-of-the-art naval combatants mark a key milestone in India’s vision of becoming a global leader in defence manufacturing and enhancing its maritime security. Prime Minister Modi, in his address, emphasized that the commissioning of these combatants reflects India’s unwavering commitment to building a robust and self-reliant defence sector. “These naval combatants will strengthen our efforts to become a global leader in defence and further our pursuit of self-reliance,” he said.

The vessels, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, are emblematic of India’s growing prowess in indigenous defence technology and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. They will play a critical role in ensuring India’s national security while showcasing the country’s advanced capabilities in naval warfare and shipbuilding.

INS Surat: A Modern Guided Missile Destroyer

INS Surat is the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project and is ranked among the world’s largest and most sophisticated destroyers. With 75 percent indigenous content, this vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art weapon systems, sensor packages, and advanced network-centric capabilities. The ship is designed to support helicopter operations and enhance combat efficiency, marking a major leap in India’s naval capabilities. INS Surat’s commissioning signifies the country’s increasing focus on building cutting-edge naval platforms with advanced technological integration.

INS Nilgiri: The Future of Stealth Frigates

INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, represents a significant advancement in the design and construction of frigates. Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the ship incorporates cutting-edge stealth technologies that minimize its radar signature, enhancing its survivability in combat situations. The vessel’s multi-role capabilities make it a vital asset to the Indian Navy, with modern aviation facilities and improved radar systems. Its induction highlights India’s ability to design and build next-generation frigates that are capable of tackling a wide range of maritime threats.

INS Vaghsheer: India’s Stealth Submarine

INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, is a testament to India’s growing expertise in submarine construction. Built in collaboration with the Naval Group of France, this Scorpene-class submarine is known for its exceptional stealth and versatility in various combat missions. Whether engaging in anti-surface warfare or anti-submarine operations, INS Vaghsheer is equipped with advanced sonar and missile systems that enhance its operational capabilities. Its commissioning underscores India’s increasing self-sufficiency in the construction of modern, combat-ready submarines.

A Step Towards Atmanirbhar Bharat

The commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer is a clear reflection of India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. These advanced naval platforms highlight the country’s capacity to produce world-class defence equipment and contribute significantly to global maritime security. Through initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, India is transforming its defence sector into a self-sustaining ecosystem capable of producing state-of-the-art defence platforms.

Prime Minister Modi’s dedication of these combatants reaffirms India’s resolve to become a global leader in the defence industry, ensuring that the nation remains at the forefront of technological innovation and military strength. As these advanced ships and submarines join the Indian Navy’s fleet, they will undoubtedly bolster India’s maritime security and position the country as a dominant force in the region.

With their induction, India takes another significant step towards a future where its defence sector is fully capable of meeting national and global security challenges. The commissioning of these naval combatants signifies not only a major technological leap but also a milestone in the journey towards a more self-reliant and powerful India.
