Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed strong support for the Union Budget 2025, calling it a “force multiplier” that will lead to a rapid increase in savings, investment, consumption, and growth. He congratulated Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for presenting a “Janta Janardan’s, People’s budget” that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.

PM Modi emphasized that the budget shifts the focus from government revenue generation to boosting individual savings and encouraging public participation in economic development. He noted, “Usually, the focus of the budget is on how the government treasury will be filled, but this budget is exactly the opposite of that.” He highlighted the aim of the budget to empower citizens to contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

The Prime Minister also praised the reforms in the budget, particularly the encouragement of private sector involvement in nuclear energy. “Encouraging the private sector in nuclear energy is historic,” he remarked, recognizing the significance of nuclear energy in advancing the country’s development.

Furthermore, PM Modi acknowledged the employment-centric policies introduced in the budget, pointing out that it prioritizes job creation across various sectors. He highlighted the infrastructure status for shipbuilding, which is expected to promote large-scale construction and support the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Tourism, a sector with immense potential, also received attention. PM Modi announced plans for building hotels at 50 major tourist destinations, reinforcing the idea that tourism and hospitality will be crucial in generating employment. He concluded that by categorizing hotels under infrastructure, the budget would enhance the sector and create more job opportunities for the workforce.

Overall, the Union Budget 2025 represents a decisive step toward inclusive growth, with a particular focus on empowering individuals, boosting employment, and facilitating sustainable development across sectors.

The 2025-26 Union Budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has sparked optimism in India’s tourism sector with strategic measures to boost growth, employment, and global visibility. The key provisions focus on enhancing infrastructure, fostering local entrepreneurship, and positioning India as a prominent player in global tourism.

A standout initiative is the development of 50 key tourist destinations across the country, in collaboration with state governments. These destinations will receive necessary infrastructure upgrades, including hotels, as part of a comprehensive infrastructure development plan. States will play a pivotal role in providing land for these projects, with the goal of long-term sustainability through public-private partnerships.

The budget also introduces skill development programs, particularly in the hospitality sector, aimed at empowering youth through specialized training at institutes of hospitality management. Performance-based incentives will reward states that excel in tourism management, focusing on cleanliness, facilities, and promotional efforts.

To further improve accessibility, Sitharaman announced the simplification of e-visa processes, including visa fee waivers for specific tourist groups. Additionally, there will be a heightened focus on spiritual tourism, with special emphasis on destinations connected to the life of Lord Buddha.

Tourism industry leaders have lauded these measures, recognizing them as transformative for India’s tourism sector. Vishal Suri from SOTC Travel praised the infrastructure developments and the potential for boosting international travel. Karan Agarwal from Cox & Kings expressed excitement over the focus on spiritual and medical tourism, while Rama Mahendru from Intrepid Travel highlighted the importance of regional accessibility through the UDAN scheme.

The Mudra Loan initiative, which supports local businesses and homestays, has also garnered praise, with Kush Kapoor from Roseate Hotels emphasizing its potential to create grassroots-level entrepreneurship. Pranav Dangi from The Hosteller and Dharamveer Singh Chouhan from Zostel both emphasized the regional focus, aiming to highlight India’s hidden gems and promote sustainable tourism.

The government’s focus on medical and wellness tourism was noted by Ashish Sidhra from Alike.io, who sees the “Heal in India” initiative as a step toward establishing India as a leading wellness destination. Rikant Pittie from EaseMyTrip and Ashwani Gandhi from Niraamaya Life also welcomed the focus on medical and wellness tourism, recognizing the significant role it will play in the country’s tourism growth.

With these initiatives, the 2025-26 Union Budget sets the stage for India’s tourism industry to thrive, offering new opportunities for local entrepreneurs, job creation, and global recognition. The push for infrastructure, connectivity, and sustainability promises a bright future for India’s tourism sector.

New Delhi, December 7: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at her North Block office on Saturday evening. The meeting, which lasted about 30 minutes, comes just days before Das’ six-year tenure as RBI Governor is set to end on December 10, sparking speculation about a possible extension.

While there has been no official announcement regarding his continuation, an extension would make Das the longest-serving RBI Governor since Benegal Rama Rau, who held the position for 7.5 years from 1949 to 1957.

Shaktikanta Das, the 25th Governor of the RBI, assumed office on December 12, 2018, and has played a pivotal role in steering India’s monetary policy during critical periods. His tenure has seen significant challenges, including the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic and global geopolitical disruptions. His term was previously extended in 2021, reflecting his importance to the financial sector.

Before his appointment as RBI Governor, Das served as Secretary in the Departments of Revenue and Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance. He also served as India’s G20 Sherpa and was a Member of the 15th Finance Commission. With over four decades of experience, he has held prominent roles in central and state governments, focusing on finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure.

Das is also credited with playing a significant role in the preparation of eight Union Budgets during his tenure in the Finance Ministry, underlining his deep expertise in fiscal and economic policymaking. An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, Das is known for his pragmatic approach and decisive leadership.

As December 10 approaches, speculation about the RBI’s leadership remains high. The decision to extend Das’ term or appoint a new Governor will have significant implications for the country’s monetary policy and economic direction.

New Delhi, December 7 – The Bharatiya Kisan Union (apolitical) has submitted a series of demands to the Union Government ahead of the Union Budget 2025-26. During a pre-budget consultation meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, BKU’s national spokesperson Dharmendra Malik represented the farmers’ concerns and proposed several reforms to support the agricultural sector.

Exemption of GST on Farming Essentials

BKU emphasized the need to exclude agricultural equipment, animal and poultry feed, fertilizers, seeds, and medicines from the ambit of GST. The union argued that farmers were tax-exempt during the previous sales tax system in states and should remain so under GST.

MSP Reform Proposals

In their memorandum, BKU called for a comprehensive overhaul of the formula for setting the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agricultural produce. They proposed that all possible risks, including post-harvest expenses (such as cleaning, grading, packaging, and transportation costs), risks of natural disasters, export bans, and government-led price falls, be factored into the MSP.

BKU also urged the government to prevent the import of agricultural products below the MSP and to impose Minimum Export Prices (MEP) only in emergency situations. Additionally, the union demanded that key fruits, vegetables, milk, and honey be brought under the MSP regime.

Enhancing Farmer Support

BKU suggested several measures to provide direct and indirect support to farmers:

Increase the PM-Kisan installment amount from the current Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000 annually.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, the insurance premium for small farmers should be made zero to enhance accessibility.

Long-term agricultural loans and equipment loans should be provided at a 1% interest rate to farmers with a history of timely repayments.

Institutional and Structural Changes

The union recommended a significant constitutional reform by including agriculture in the concurrent list of the Seventh Schedule. They also proposed creating a central cadre of the Indian Agricultural Service, modeled after the Indian Administrative Service, to address the sector’s strategic needs.

Strengthening Market Infrastructure

To improve market access for farmers, BKU called for an increase in agricultural markets across the country. They also suggested that facilities for grading, packaging, and branding should be made available to farmers within these markets.

Acknowledgment and Gratitude

BKU expressed its gratitude to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for including farmers in the pre-budget consultation process. They highlighted the agricultural sector’s significant role in employment generation and the pressing need for targeted support to address long-standing neglect.

Pre-Budget Consultation Process

The meeting was part of the Finance Ministry’s annual exercise to gather inputs from various stakeholders, including farmer associations, agricultural economists, industry leaders, and state officials. The Budget for 2025-26 is scheduled to be tabled on February 1, 2025, marking Nirmala Sitharaman’s eighth Budget presentation.

The upcoming Budget is expected to include key announcements that will shape the Modi government’s economic roadmap during the remainder of its third term. Farmers, economists, and citizens alike are eagerly awaiting the government’s vision for the future of India’s agricultural sector.
