Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his 127th birth anniversary, praising the legendary freedom fighter as an embodiment of courage, perseverance, and selflessness. On January 23, observed as Parakram Diwas, the Prime Minister shared his admiration for Bose, calling him an unparalleled figure in India’s freedom struggle and a continuous source of inspiration for the country’s youth.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Modi wrote, “Today, on Parakram Diwas, I pay homage to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. His contribution to India’s freedom movement is unparalleled. He epitomised courage and grit. His vision continues to motivate us as we work towards building the India he envisioned.”

The Prime Minister also released a video message celebrating Bose’s unwavering commitment to the nation, emphasizing his sacrifices. Modi said, “Netaji’s life was marked by hard work and valour. He gave up his personal dreams and interests for India’s independence. If he had wished, he could have lived a comfortable life, but instead, he chose the path of sacrifice for a free India.”

Further, Modi reflected on Bose’s efforts to preserve and promote India’s cultural heritage, noting that Bose not only opposed foreign rule but also confronted those who doubted India’s ancient and rich traditions. He lauded Bose’s work in establishing India as the “Mother of Democracy” to the world, solidifying his role as a key architect of India’s freedom and pride.

President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute to Netaji, acknowledging his significant role in the freedom movement. She expressed her respect for his leadership of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) and emphasized how his indomitable spirit and determination continue to inspire people across generations. In her message, she stated, “On the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, observed as Parakram Diwas, I pay my humble tribute to one of the greatest sons of Bharat Mata.”

Born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Odisha, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s legacy has grown far beyond his life. His relentless pursuit of India’s independence, despite personal sacrifices, has made him a towering figure in Indian history. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, the Government of India declared January 23 as Parakram Diwas in 2021, a day to honor his valor and inspire future generations to follow his example of dedication and patriotism.

The celebration of Parakram Diwas was inaugurated in 2021 at Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial Hall, marking the occasion with tributes to Bose’s life and leadership. In 2022, a holographic statue of Bose was unveiled at India Gate, further cementing his place in the nation’s heart. Plans are also underway to establish a National Memorial dedicated to Netaji on the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy.

Born into a prominent Bengali family, Bose’s journey to becoming a revolutionary leader was marked by his early involvement in nationalist activities, leading to his expulsion from Presidency College in 1916. After completing his studies, he attended the University of Cambridge, where he passed the Indian Civil Service exam. However, Bose chose to reject a comfortable life in favor of dedicating himself to the struggle for India’s freedom. His extraordinary leadership, visionary ideas, and commitment to equality inspired millions to join the fight for independence.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s life remains a beacon of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. Today, his legacy continues to fuel the spirit of freedom and patriotism in the hearts of countless Indians.

On January 23, 2025, the nation will commemorate the 127th birth anniversary of one of India’s most iconic and resolute freedom fighters, Subhas Chandra Bose. Known for his unwavering commitment to India’s independence, Bose’s legacy continues to inspire generations. His courage, leadership, and defiance against colonial rule have etched his name in the annals of history, making him a revered figure in India’s struggle for independence.

Early Life and Education

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Odisha, into a prosperous Bengali family. From a young age, he exhibited exceptional intelligence and determination. After completing his schooling in Cuttack, Bose moved to Kolkata (then Calcutta) for higher education. He attended the Presidency College, where he quickly developed a keen interest in the political landscape of India. He later moved to England, where he attended Cambridge University and passed the Indian Civil Services (ICS) examination with distinction. However, despite his success, Bose’s passion for India’s freedom led him to renounce a promising career in the British colonial administration.

Rise as a Freedom Fighter

Subhas Chandra Bose’s journey in the freedom movement began in earnest when he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in the 1920s. Initially influenced by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and the non-violent path of the Congress, Bose soon grew disillusioned with the slow progress of the independence movement under Gandhi’s leadership. Bose’s dynamic personality and his desire for immediate, radical action made him clash with Congress leadership on several occasions.

Bose was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress twice, once in 1938 and again in 1939, where he sought to take a more assertive stance against British imperialism. His vision was of a free India achieved through a more aggressive campaign against the British, including armed resistance, rather than just passive resistance. This led him to resign from the presidency in 1939 after differences with Congress’s leadership over strategic approaches.

Forming the Indian National Army

Perhaps Bose’s most remarkable and daring contribution was his leadership of the Indian National Army (INA). During World War II, after being imprisoned by the British, he escaped to Germany and then Japan, where he sought assistance to fight against British rule. In 1943, with the support of Axis powers, he formed the INA in Southeast Asia. His famous slogan, “Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom!” galvanized thousands of Indians living abroad to join the struggle.

Bose’s leadership in the INA inspired a generation of Indians to believe that independence could be achieved through forceful means. Despite the eventual defeat of the INA in the Second World War, the army’s efforts contributed to the growing pressure on the British, showing them that India was willing to fight for its freedom on all fronts.

Legacy and Controversies

Subhas Chandra Bose’s mysterious disappearance in 1945, after reportedly dying in a plane crash, has long been a subject of controversy and speculation. Some argue that he survived and continued to fight for India’s freedom from exile, though definitive proof has never surfaced.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding his death, Subhas Chandra Bose’s legacy remains undiminished. His vision for an independent India, his advocacy for armed struggle, and his commitment to his people stand as a testament to his extraordinary dedication. Bose’s bravery, strategic thinking, and undying patriotism remain a source of inspiration for many.

A National Hero

Subhas Chandra Bose’s birthday is celebrated across India with great fervor. His life and contributions to the independence movement are commemorated through various programs, speeches, and events that remind the nation of his vision for a free and united India. His personal motto, “Freedom is not given, it is taken,” continues to resonate deeply with those who believe in the power of self-determination and freedom.

As we honor Subhas Chandra Bose on his 127th birth anniversary, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters, including Bose, who fought relentlessly for the cause of independence. Bose’s life teaches us that the path to freedom is not always easy, but with courage and conviction, it is possible to achieve the impossible.

Conclusion

Subhas Chandra Bose’s indomitable spirit and his courage to pursue his vision for an independent India make him one of the most remarkable figures in the history of India’s freedom struggle. On his 127th birth anniversary, let us pay tribute to his immense contribution to the nation and renew our commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous India, just as Bose envisioned.
