India has once again demonstrated its unwavering support for the Global South by sending a vital shipment of humanitarian aid to São Tomé and Príncipe, a small island nation in Central Africa. On January 18, India dispatched a consignment of essential medical supplies to help bolster the country’s public health infrastructure. The aid includes life-saving medicines, insulin, blood glucose monitors and strips, human albumin, and oral rehydration salts (ORS), which are expected to make a significant impact on the island nation’s healthcare services.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India issued a statement on social media reaffirming the country’s ongoing commitment to the Global South. It emphasized the importance of the assistance in strengthening São Tomé and Príncipe’s public health system, particularly in the face of ongoing challenges.

“India reaffirms its commitment to the Global South. Humanitarian assistance of medical supplies comprising life-saving and essential medicines, including insulin, blood glucose monitors, and strips, human albumin, ORS, etc., has been dispatched to São Tomé and Príncipe. This assistance will help strengthen the public health services of São Tomé and Príncipe,” the MEA statement read.

This is not the first time India has extended its helping hand to São Tomé and Príncipe. Over the years, the two countries have built a strong partnership, with India providing significant aid to support the island nation’s development. In 2019, India gifted 150 computers to São Tomé and Príncipe to enhance the information technology capabilities of its ministries and secondary schools. The following year, India donated medicines worth Euro 95,000 (approximately USD 111,150) to the country, further solidifying its role as a reliable partner in times of need.

In 2023, India again came to the aid of São Tomé and Príncipe with a donation of life-saving drugs and generic medicines valued at USD 25,000. This ongoing support highlights the long-standing friendship between the two nations, which dates back to São Tomé and Príncipe’s independence from Portugal in 1975.

The bilateral relationship between India and São Tomé and Príncipe has grown steadily over the years, with both countries engaging in high-level diplomatic exchanges. Leaders from both nations have met at various international forums, such as the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). One notable milestone was the visit of Dr. Carlos Alberto Pires Tiny, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation & Communities of São Tomé and Príncipe, to India in 2009—marking the first high-level visit between the two countries since the island nation gained independence.

São Tomé and Príncipe has also expressed its support for India on the global stage, particularly in the context of India’s bid for a Permanent Seat on the United Nations Security Council. In recognition of India’s role in promoting South-South cooperation and its contributions to international peacekeeping, São Tomé and Príncipe pledged to back India’s aspirations, as well as its candidacy for a Non-Permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2011-2012 term.

India’s latest humanitarian aid reinforces the nation’s long-standing commitment to the well-being and development of countries in the Global South, marking another chapter in the enduring friendship between India and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently hailed the completion of the Genome India Project as a monumental achievement in the field of biotechnology. Launched with the vision of creating a comprehensive genetic database for India, the project is set to revolutionize healthcare, genetics, and policymaking in the country. With the sequencing of 10,000 genomes from diverse populations, this initiative is not just a technological breakthrough but a significant step toward understanding and addressing the unique health challenges faced by India.

What is the Genome India Project (GIP)?

The Genome India Project (GIP) is a pioneering national initiative aimed at creating a genetic resource that reflects the vast diversity of India’s population. The project, funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, was launched in January 2020. Its main objective is to sequence 10,000 genomes of healthy individuals from different regions, ethnic groups, and communities across the country. This data will help build a detailed genetic catalogue, which will serve as a reference point for understanding the country’s unique genetic landscape.

India is home to one of the world’s most genetically diverse populations, with numerous ethnic groups, languages, and cultural practices. This genetic diversity plays a significant role in how diseases manifest and how individuals respond to treatments. By sequencing the genomes of 10,000 individuals, the GIP aims to create a valuable resource that can be accessed by researchers and scientists to study the genetic variations within the Indian population.

Key Features of the Genome India Project

Panchkula, Haryana, December 7, 2024 — Union Health Minister JP Nadda launched the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan on Saturday in Panchkula, Haryana, marking the beginning of a 100-day campaign aimed at combating Tuberculosis (TB) across India. The initiative focuses on rapidly detecting and treating TB patients in 347 districts most affected by the disease, as part of the government’s broader efforts to eliminate TB by 2030, ahead of the global deadline.

At the launch event, Nadda emphasized the government’s dedication to eradicating TB, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bold 2018 declaration to “end TB” in India. “When people used to say ‘fight against’ TB, in 2018 our Prime Minister Narendra Modi said ‘end TB’. This was a very bold statement for the world,” Nadda remarked. He added that despite the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the government remains committed to achieving a TB-free India, though the goal might take some time beyond 2025.

The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan campaign is integral to India’s strategy of eliminating TB before the 2030 deadline set by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Nadda also reflected on the historical stigma associated with TB, noting that in the past, TB patients were often isolated due to fear of the disease’s spread. He praised the Prime Minister’s vision for a TB-free India, which aims to surpass the global deadline for eradication.

Highlighting recent advancements in TB treatment, Nadda pointed out that India now boasts over 1.7 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, which are pivotal in early TB detection. He also underscored the introduction of a daily drug regimen for sensitive TB cases, which has shortened treatment periods and significantly increased the TB treatment success rate to 87%. Furthermore, the government has provided Rs 3,338 crore through direct benefit transfers under the Ni-kshay support scheme, benefiting over 1.17 crore TB patients.

Nadda shared encouraging statistics, revealing that the rate of TB decline in India has more than doubled, from 8.3% in 2015 to 17.7% today, significantly outpacing the global average. Over the past decade, TB-related deaths in India have decreased by 21.4%.

MP Nayab Singh Saini also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of government initiatives like the Jan Bhagidari, Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana, Fit India, and Khelo India campaigns, which contribute to the fight against TB. He highlighted the government’s focus on the “4Ts” — Test, Track, Treat, and Technology — as a comprehensive approach to eliminating TB.

The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan is a major step forward in India’s ongoing battle against TB, aiming to detect and treat the disease more effectively, reduce its transmission, and ultimately achieve a TB-free nation.
