Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], December 28: The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 continues with an exciting clash between Hyderabad FC (HFC) and East Bengal FC (EBFC) at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium. Scheduled for December 28, Saturday, at 5:00 PM IST, this will be the ninth ISL face-off between these two sides, with East Bengal aiming to maintain their recent dominance over Hyderabad.

East Bengal FC have had the upper hand in their last two encounters with Hyderabad FC, completing a league double over them during the 2023-24 season. On the other hand, Hyderabad FC, currently reeling from five consecutive league defeats, will be eager to reverse their fortunes on home turf.

The Red & Gold Brigade, meanwhile, are riding a wave of resurgence. They have won four out of their last five matches, climbing to 11th place in the league standings with 13 points from 12 matches. In comparison, Hyderabad FC, struggling at 12th place, have managed just seven points from the same number of games. East Bengal’s attacking form has been particularly impressive in recent games, with nine goals scored in their last five matches—a key factor in their revival.

Hyderabad FC’s defensive struggles have been a recurring theme this season, with 25 goals conceded in 12 matches—their second-highest tally at this stage of an ISL campaign. This includes heavy defeats such as a 6-0 drubbing by Odisha FC and a 5-2 loss to NorthEast United FC. Despite these setbacks, defender Alex Saji has been a standout performer, averaging 5.8 clearances per game—the highest among Indian players this season. His leadership at the back will be crucial as Hyderabad attempt to keep East Bengal’s attack in check.

East Bengal FC come into this match on a two-game winning streak, having defeated Punjab FC 4-2 and Jamshedpur FC 1-0. They will aim to make history by securing three consecutive ISL wins for the first time. Additionally, the team has shown defensive solidity in recent outings, with three clean sheets in their last five matches, including a 2-0 away win against Chennaiyin FC. Another clean sheet in this match would mark a milestone for East Bengal, as they have never achieved consecutive away clean sheets in ISL history.

In their past eight encounters, Hyderabad FC hold the upper hand with four wins, while East Bengal have won twice. Two matches ended in draws.

Hyderabad FC’s interim head coach, Shameel Chembakath, acknowledged the challenges but emphasized his team’s determination to bounce back. “I know the morale is not what we wanted it to be, but the players are showing determination in training. It’s a home match, so we need to get three points and stay focused on a positive result,” he stated.

Meanwhile, East Bengal head coach Oscar Bruzon highlighted the importance of this game for their league campaign. “This match is very important since we need to consolidate our position in the points table. We’ve been discussing what we need to do in the last few games,” he said.

Key players to watch include Cleiton Silva, who has struggled to find the net this season but boasts a strong record against Hyderabad FC, having scored in his last two matches against them. Another name to keep an eye on is David Lalhlansanga, who has scored twice this season with a perfect shooting accuracy of 100%.

For Hyderabad, Edmilson Correia’s recent performance stands out—he scored twice in their 2-5 loss to NorthEast United FC and recorded an xG differential of 1.88, the second-highest in a single game this season. His attacking flair could prove to be a handful for East Bengal’s defense.

With both teams desperate to improve their standing, this match promises an intriguing battle. East Bengal FC will look to continue their upward trajectory, while Hyderabad FC will hope to reignite their campaign with a morale-boosting victory at home.

Shenzhen [China], December 27: India’s premier badminton star Lakshya Sen secured a spot in the semi-finals of the King Cup International Badminton Open 2024, delivering an impressive maiden victory over Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long on Friday.

Ranked 12th in the world, Lakshya triumphed over the world number 17 in a thrilling three-game match with scores of 10-21, 21-13, 21-13. Despite a shaky start in the opening game, where Lakshya conceded the set easily, the Indian shuttler made a stellar comeback in the subsequent games.

The second game saw Lakshya regroup and gain a three-point lead by the mid-game interval. Angus Ng Ka Long, known for his pace, kept himself in the contest but was ultimately undone by repeated forced errors. This marks Lakshya’s first win against Angus Ng Ka Long in their four head-to-head matches. Their last encounter at the Malaysia Masters in 2023 had ended in Angus’ favor, with a scoreline of 21-14, 21-19.

In Saturday’s semi-final, Lakshya will face Chinese teenager Hu Zhe An. The 18-year-old, who stunned Singapore’s former world champion Loh Kean Yew in the quarterfinals, is currently ranked 183rd in senior rankings. However, Hu Zhe An is the reigning junior world champion and holds the top spot in the junior world rankings, making him a formidable opponent despite his lower senior ranking.

The semi-finals will also feature top players, including Paris 2024 silver medallist and current world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, Denmark’s world number two Anders Antonsen, French talent Alex Lanier, and China’s Wang Zi Jun.

Adding to the excitement, an exhibition match between badminton legends Lin Dan and Taufik Hidayat is scheduled for Saturday. The inaugural King Cup International Badminton Open, founded by two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan, focuses exclusively on men’s singles and features an elite eight-player lineup.

This unique tournament follows a single-elimination format and does not award ranking points, as it is not part of the BWF calendar. Nevertheless, its star-studded roster and competitive format have drawn significant attention from badminton enthusiasts worldwide.
