On its ninth anniversary, the Startup India mission continues to be a driving force behind India’s economic growth and innovation. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, lauded the initiative’s pivotal role in transforming India’s entrepreneurial landscape. The Minister emphasized that the success of Startup India could largely be attributed to crucial funding mechanisms, especially the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), which has catalyzed growth across various sectors and regions.

Empowering Startups with Funding and Support

The Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), administered by the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and backed by the Government of India, has played a vital role in mobilizing private capital, particularly in Tier II and Tier III cities. This focus on regional growth has allowed startups to scale their operations and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy.

In his address, Piyush Goyal highlighted how these funding mechanisms have fueled startup growth, empowering them to innovate and expand. He underscored the importance of private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) in providing startups with the financial backing and global expertise necessary for success. According to Goyal, this collaboration not only accelerates innovation but also enables startups to compete on the international stage.

One of the standout initiatives of the government in this regard is the BHASKAR platform, designed to connect startups with mentorship, financial tools, and collaborative opportunities across the country. This ecosystem of support has helped Indian startups build resilience, overcome challenges, and stay competitive.

Startups as Agents of Change

Indian startups have emerged as powerful agents of change, addressing some of the nation’s most pressing issues, including sustainability, renewable energy, healthcare, and digital transformation. “Through their innovation and resilience, they are shaping a better future for all of us,” said Goyal, emphasizing the transformative impact of these young companies.

India’s startup ecosystem has shown tremendous growth, with a remarkable 76 Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in 2024 alone. As of January 15, 2025, the country boasts 1,59,157 startups—a massive leap from around 500 in 2016. This growth has resulted in the creation of 17.2 lakh direct jobs, demonstrating the profound economic contribution of startups.

India’s Startup Ecosystem: A Global Leader

India now ranks as the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, a testament to the success of initiatives like Startup India. With a growing number of startups, funding of Rs 13 trillion from the government, and increasing participation from private investors, India is becoming a global leader in innovation and technology-driven growth.

Piyush Goyal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where startups can thrive. From technological sectors such as digitech and artificial intelligence to policy-driven initiatives, the government has positioned India as a leader in the global startup arena. “We are committed to providing support in terms of policies, infrastructure, and capital to ensure the continued growth of India’s startup ecosystem,” he said.

The Role of Women in India’s Startup Revolution

An important aspect of India’s startup journey has been the increasing participation of women in entrepreneurship. Goyal pointed out that 43% of STEM graduates in India are women, underlining their critical role in driving innovation and growth. He highlighted initiatives like the Women Entrepreneurship Platform, which empowers women-led startups, furthering India’s vision of inclusive growth.

Looking Ahead: A New Phase of Innovation

As India enters a crucial phase of development with strong macroeconomic fundamentals, Goyal emphasized the essential role startups will play in achieving the nation’s long-term goals. These companies will be at the forefront of realizing a self-reliant, inclusive, and globally competitive India in the coming decades.

The Startup Mahakumbh and the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge

The anniversary event also served as a curtain raiser for the second edition of the Startup Mahakumbh, scheduled for April 2025. This grand event will feature over 2,500 startups, further solidifying India’s role as a global hub for entrepreneurship. Additionally, the government launched the PRABHAAV Factbook, offering a comprehensive overview of India’s startup ecosystem and its evolution from 2016 to 2024.

Moreover, the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge was unveiled, aiming to address 75 challenges across diverse sectors such as renewable energy, blockchain, agritech, and smart manufacturing. This challenge will provide startups with opportunities for procurement, cash prizes, mentorship, funding, and networking, enabling them to further scale their impact and contribute to India’s growth story.

Conclusion

The ninth anniversary of the Startup India mission marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. Through a combination of robust funding, supportive policies, and a collaborative ecosystem, the country’s startup sector has flourished. As the government continues to strengthen its commitment to fostering entrepreneurial growth, India is well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory in the years to come, driven by the ingenuity and resilience of its startups.

New Delhi, January 16 – The Indian Embassy in Japan is currently celebrating ‘Assam Week,’ an initiative aimed at highlighting the rich heritage and immense economic potential of the northeastern state of Assam. This event also seeks to underscore Assam’s significant contributions to various sectors, including education, industry, agriculture, and security, both within India and internationally.

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to express his gratitude towards the Indian Embassy in Japan for their enthusiastic participation in the week-long celebration. In his message, Sarma emphasized that Assam Week was not only an opportunity to celebrate the state’s cultural heritage but also to showcase its growing significance in areas like education, industrial development, and security.

“Indian Embassies are celebrating Assam Week to showcase the State’s rich heritage & our potential to become a leading State in India with concerted efforts in education, industry, security and agriculture. Gratitude to India in Japan for enthusiastically celebrating this week,” the Chief Minister said.

Focus on Key Sectors:

The celebration, which began on Wednesday, featured a special focus on Assam’s promising electronics and semiconductor sectors. The embassy’s efforts to highlight these industries are particularly timely, given the recent developments in Assam’s technological landscape, such as the establishment of Tata’s semiconductor unit in Morigaon.

Today’s celebration shifted its focus to the state’s aerospace and defense sectors, recognizing Assam’s growing importance in these high-tech industries. The Indian Embassy’s celebrations provide a global platform to showcase the diverse opportunities the state offers for international collaborations and investments.

Tata Semiconductor Unit in Morigaon: A Game Changer

One of the standout features of Assam Week is the attention drawn to Assam’s expanding semiconductor industry. In February 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal for Tata’s semiconductor unit to be established in Morigaon, Assam. This high-tech facility, to be developed by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT), is set to be a major milestone for both Assam and the entire country.

The Morigaon unit will focus on developing advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, including flip-chip and Integrated System in Package (I-SIP) technologies, which are critical for key sectors like automotive (especially electric vehicles), communications, and network infrastructure. These cutting-edge technologies are poised to strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain, making it less dependent on foreign suppliers.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The Morigaon semiconductor project, with a massive investment of Rs 27,000 crores, is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits for Assam and the wider region. The unit will have the capacity to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day, a contribution that will greatly bolster the nation’s technological infrastructure.

The project is also expected to create thousands of job opportunities. Approximately 15,000 direct jobs and an additional 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs will be generated, providing a substantial economic boost to the local community and contributing to Assam’s broader economic growth.

A Bright Future for Assam

With initiatives like ‘Assam Week,’ the Indian Embassy in Japan is playing a crucial role in bridging the gap between Assam and global stakeholders. The state’s growing prominence in high-tech sectors, coupled with its rich cultural heritage and diverse resources, makes it an attractive destination for international investments and collaborations.

As Assam continues to chart its path toward becoming a leading state in India, the successful celebration of ‘Assam Week’ in Japan serves as a testament to the region’s potential to make a global impact in various fields, from agriculture and industry to education, defense, and technology.

According to a recent report by Moody’s Ratings, 2025 is set to bring significant advancements in autonomous AI agents capable of planning, executing, and adapting tasks with minimal human intervention. These systems are poised to revolutionize industries by driving operational efficiencies and supporting AI adoption across diverse sectors.

While the broader economic benefits of AI may take years to fully materialize, the ongoing competition among AI developers is already creating a wave of accessible and capable products. As industries increasingly integrate AI, the technology’s potential to enhance productivity and innovation appears limitless.

The race to dominate artificial intelligence (AI) is entering a new phase in 2025, with competition among foundation model developers driving innovation in features and usability rather than just scaling data and computational power. Major AI research labs are reaching comparable performance levels, with industry leaders pushing boundaries to deliver better, user-friendly products tailored to diverse use cases.

Performance benchmarks of leading foundation models have converged in terms of accuracy and task diversity. Open-source models have added to the competitive pressure by offering affordable and flexible alternatives to proprietary systems. These innovations aim to integrate seamlessly into workflows, accelerating adoption across industries such as finance, media, and automotive.

However, the exponential scaling of AI models is hitting diminishing returns. High-quality datasets are becoming scarce, and additional computational resources yield smaller performance gains. As a result, developers are turning to synthetic data, which mimics real-world scenarios to address data shortages. While promising for structured domains like cybersecurity and healthcare, synthetic data has limitations in handling complex, unstructured tasks such as natural language processing.

AI model improvements now hinge on enhancing the inference process, where AI systems process and respond to user prompts. This focus on improving inference processes is expected to drive the next wave of AI advancements, ensuring that autonomous AI agents become even more efficient and capable in the coming years.

In a significant step towards enhancing Kerala’s position as a global investment hub, Industries Minister P. Rajeev led a high-profile delegation to Dubai, where the state secured strong support for the upcoming Invest Kerala Global Summit (IKGS) scheduled for February 21-22, 2025. This visit marks a pivotal moment in Kerala’s ongoing efforts to attract international investment and deepen its ties with key global markets, particularly the UAE.

The meetings, held from January 13-14, 2025, brought together Minister Rajeev and top UAE officials, including UAE Minister of Investment Mohamed Hassan Al Suwaidi and Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce. These discussions proved fruitful, with the UAE confirming its commitment to the event by sending a special delegation to Kerala for the summit. The UAE’s strong support signals a new chapter in bilateral trade and investment between Kerala and the Gulf nation.

Strategic Areas of Collaboration

The meetings focused on areas of mutual interest, with Minister Suwaidi expressing particular interest in Kerala’s burgeoning logistics and food processing sectors. The UAE has seen its investments diversify across various industries, and Kerala’s established strengths in these sectors made it an attractive destination for capital inflows. To further assess potential investment opportunities, the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce also announced plans to send officials to Kerala for preliminary site evaluations ahead of the IKGS.

The discussions underscored Kerala’s readiness to embrace international investment, as the state continues to evolve as a crucial player in India’s economic landscape.

Ambassador’s Remarks on Kerala’s Strategic Position

During the investor roadshow at Taj Dubai, Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Shri Sunjay Sudhir, highlighted the unique strategic position of Kerala in Indo-UAE relations. “Kerala stands out in the trade connection. From humble beginnings, we have reached a stage where India is the UAE’s second-largest trading partner,” Ambassador Sudhir noted. He further underscored the growing economic importance of the UAE’s capital, stating that Abu Dhabi has emerged as the “capital of capital” with its sovereign wealth fund assets surpassing those of many other global financial hubs.

Minister Rajeev’s Vision for Kerala’s Industrial Future

Minister Rajeev took the opportunity to address potential investors and challenge misconceptions about Kerala’s industrial landscape. He emphasized the state’s remarkable contributions to India’s economy, despite its relatively small geographic and demographic footprint. “Despite occupying just 1.16% of India’s land area and 2.8% of its population, Kerala contributes a remarkable 4% to the national GDP,” he pointed out, bolstered by compelling statistics about the state’s diverse industrial achievements.

The minister also spotlighted Kerala’s leadership in the medical device industry, revealing that the state accounts for 24% of India’s total medical device industry turnover and 17% of medical device products. This data demonstrates Kerala’s significant role in the healthcare sector, both domestically and globally.

Technological Innovation at Kerala’s Core

In addition to its industrial prowess, Minister Rajeev highlighted Kerala’s pioneering role in technology. He drew attention to the state’s long history of technological leadership, citing the establishment of Keltron in 1973 – India’s first public-sector electronics company – and Technopark in 1993, which remains the country’s first and largest technology park.

Today, Kerala’s technological expertise continues to shape India’s future, with Keltron managing cutting-edge AI-based traffic control systems for National Highways and smart city projects across the country. These achievements underscore Kerala’s robust infrastructure in technology, making it an attractive destination for both domestic and foreign investors.

Looking Ahead to the Global Summit

With strong backing from the UAE’s business and government leaders, the upcoming Invest Kerala Global Summit is poised to be a landmark event in the state’s investment journey. The summit promises to be an excellent platform for showcasing Kerala’s potential across key sectors, including logistics, food processing, medical devices, and technology. As Kerala continues to foster strong ties with international markets, it is on track to become a major player in the global economic landscape.

As the state gears up for the IKGS in February, all eyes will be on Kerala’s growing role as a dynamic economic hub, driven by innovation, industrial excellence, and strategic international partnerships.

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, a new report highlighted a significant shift in how global industries are evolving with the help of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins. By 2027, approximately sixty percent of global manufacturers are expected to incorporate generative AI into their operations. This move will help speed up the acquisition of expertise, especially in industries facing a growing shortage of skilled labor.

The core idea behind this integration of AI is to preserve the expertise of retiring employees and pass it on to the new generation, ensuring that valuable knowledge is not lost. When combined with digital twins — virtual representations of physical assets or processes — the impact of AI becomes even more powerful. This union enables a range of advancements from enhanced performance monitoring and optimization to creating realistic simulations and generating precise predictions. Together, AI and digital twins have the potential to revolutionize industries by improving operational efficiency and fostering smarter decision-making.

One clear example of this transformation can be seen in the IT sector. Historically, one IT administrator might have serviced around 1,000 tickets. However, thanks to digitalization, the same administrator can now handle up to 100,000 tickets. Importantly, this shift doesn’t eliminate IT jobs but rather increases productivity, demonstrating that digital tools can augment human capacity rather than replace it.

This pattern is expected to repeat across multiple industries as digital technologies become more widely adopted. According to WEF, when these technologies are combined with sector-specific knowledge, they can unlock vast new possibilities, making cutting-edge solutions more accessible and addressing crucial challenges such as equitable growth and sustainability. The ability to scale such technologies holds the potential to not only improve productivity but also to help tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues.

AI’s strength lies in its capacity to turn raw data into actionable insights. When paired with digital twins, AI enables the collection, analysis, and optimization of data to eliminate inefficiencies and make smarter decisions. For example, in highly automated manufacturing environments, machines generate vast amounts of data—equivalent to half a million movies every month. Historically, much of this data has gone underutilized, but with the introduction of AI, manufacturers are able to unlock valuable insights. AI helps to identify patterns, spot inefficiencies, predict outcomes, and facilitate better decision-making. In fact, in quality control, the integration of AI and digital twins has reduced efforts by 95%.

While the use of AI and digital twins is particularly transformative in manufacturing, the potential of these technologies extends far beyond factories. In healthcare, AI can assist in interpreting complex medical images, such as MRI scans and X-rays, improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. In agriculture, robots equipped with AI can help identify ripe fruits for harvesting, streamlining processes in the field. In the building sector, AI can be used to analyze data from building materials and designs to enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions.

To unlock the full potential of these technologies and address the global productivity gap, the key lies in developing a comprehensive digital strategy. By adopting technologies like AI and digital twins across industries, we can drive sustainable growth, foster innovation, and improve efficiency. As WEF emphasizes, how we embrace and implement these tools today will lay the foundation for future generations, creating a landscape where technology not only boosts productivity but also tackles critical global challenges such as sustainability and equitable development.

New Delhi, December 27: India’s telecom industry, which has amassed a remarkable 1.2 billion subscribers, is now diving into the realms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and pushing the envelope on 6G technology. The sector, which has experienced unprecedented growth, saw its average monthly wireless data usage reach 21.30 GB per user by October 2024.

According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the deployment of more than 460,000 5G BTS sites has significantly boosted 5G adoption, with user numbers surpassing 125 million. Projections suggest that by 2026, this figure will soar to 350 million. The Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology, a major use case for 5G, has also seen rapid expansion, with nearly 3 million connections established in just one year.

As a critical contributor to India’s GDP and employing over 4 million people, the telecom sector is now focusing on AI and 6G. In fact, more than 55% of technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) companies in India have fully integrated AI into their operations, with an additional 37% scaling up their AI initiatives, as reported by KPMG India.

The government’s Bharat 6G Vision initiative aims to secure 10% of the global 6G patents and is actively supporting research and development. This includes funding for advanced testbeds and assessing proposals to accelerate the development of the 6G ecosystem.

Despite these advancements, the telecom industry faces several challenges. One of the major concerns is the burden of Large Traffic Generators (LTGs), which have forced Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to invest Rs 10,000 crore in 2023. The lack of contributions from LTGs has also led to a loss of Rs 800 crore in AGR dues and taxes for the Indian government.

Additionally, COAI has raised concerns over unregulated over-the-top (OTT) communication platforms. The association argues that these platforms create an uneven playing field, as TSPs must comply with stringent security regulations. COAI advocates for the implementation of traceability and privacy rules for OTT services to ensure fair competition and security.

The allocation of the 6 GHz spectrum band, vital for 5G, remains a critical need, and COAI has called for immediate allocation to mobile networks. The rise of unauthorized Wi-Fi 6E routers sold online also poses a challenge that needs to be addressed. Moreover, issues such as infrastructure constraints, Right of Way (RoW) challenges, and spectrum interference are hindering the speed of network rollouts, with the newly proposed Quality of Service (QoS) norms considered impractical by TSPs.

To further streamline the sector, COAI is urging the extension of Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) regulations to OTT services to tackle the persistent issue of spam calls and messages.

Despite these hurdles, government initiatives such as the elimination of the Wireless Operating License (WOL) and the waiver of bank guarantee requirements for deferred spectrum payments have provided significant financial relief. Additionally, the Supreme Court’s ruling on tax credits for telecom tower components has further eased the sector’s financial burdens.

As India’s telecom sector continues to evolve and embrace new technologies, the path forward will require a careful balance of innovation, regulation, and collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders.
