In a remarkable display of all-round brilliance, Jomel Warrican led the West Indies to a historic 120-run victory over Pakistan in Multan, a triumph that not only leveled the series but also marked their first win on Pakistani soil in over 30 years. The left-arm spinner’s exceptional performance with both bat and ball earned him the Player of the Match and Player of the Series accolades, cementing his status as the standout performer of the series.

Warrican’s mastery with the ball was on full display throughout the contest, as he claimed an impressive 19 wickets, showcasing his ability to consistently hit the right areas and extract maximum value from the conditions. Reflecting on his success, Warrican attributed his dominance to “the variation of pace and hitting the same length over and over,” emphasizing the importance of consistency in his approach.

Pakistan’s batting line-up found themselves under constant pressure as Warrican relentlessly exploited the conditions. His skillful control and precision were evident in the second Test, where he claimed another five-wicket haul, dismantling Pakistan’s middle and lower order with ease. His bowling proved too much for the hosts, leaving them unable to break free of his grip.

But Warrican was not just a force with the ball. With the bat, he backed his game plan, showing confidence in his ability to clear the boundary when the ball was in his zone. He also showcased his ability to rotate the strike and defend when needed, contributing valuable runs down the order. Though his primary role was with the ball, his batting proved vital in building pressure and frustrating Pakistan further.

Warrican’s performance was pivotal in securing West Indies’ first victory on Pakistani soil since 1990. His outstanding contributions with the ball, coupled with the supporting efforts of the spin trio, ensured that Pakistan’s batting collapsed for just 133 runs in their second innings. The relentless pressure applied by the West Indies spinners led to the rapid dismissal of Pakistan’s final six wickets, with a brief resistance from Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha.

The win was built on masterful spin bowling, and it was clear from early on that Pakistan was in trouble. Kevin Sinclair struck immediately on the third day, dismissing Saud Shakeel, and Warrican quickly followed up, sending nightwatchman Kashif Ali packing. Rizwan and Agha fought valiantly to resist the West Indies spinners, but the pressure was relentless.

Warrican’s crucial breakthrough came when he dismissed Agha, trapping him in front with a low delivery. He then accounted for Rizwan, breaching the bat-pad gap with another well-executed ball to leave Pakistan’s tail exposed. The West Indies closed in on victory, with Gudakesh Motie removing Noman Ali and Warrican fittingly claiming the final wicket, taking his series tally to an impressive 19 wickets.

The West Indies erupted in celebration as Warrican’s thigh-thumping celebration symbolized the team’s domination over Pakistan. It was a sweet and deserved victory for the men in maroon, marking a memorable chapter in West Indies’ cricket history.

In a thrilling turn of events, Jomel Warrican and the West Indies’ spin attack put on a mesmerizing performance, toppling Pakistan for just 133 runs and securing a remarkable 120-run victory in Multan. This historic win, which marked the West Indies’ first on Pakistani soil since 1990, leveled the series and saw the men in maroon emerge victorious on the third day of the second Test match.

The West Indies’ spin quartet delivered an awe-inspiring display, as they ruthlessly dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup. Early on Day 3, the West Indies seized control with the dismissal of Saud Shakeel, who was caught behind off Kevin Sinclair’s sharp spin. The pressure intensified when nightwatchman Kashif Ali was undone by a brilliant delivery from Warrican, who trapped him in front, leaving Pakistan reeling at 39/3.

Despite the mounting pressure, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha tried to steady the ship, building a small but resilient 39-run partnership. However, the West Indies’ spinners tightened the noose with every passing over. Rizwan, who had displayed occasional flashes of resistance, found himself unable to break free from the relentless spin attack.

The breakthrough came when Warrican trapped Agha leg before wicket, a delivery that skidded low and hit him on the back pad. The game was now firmly in the West Indies’ hands. Warrican wasn’t done yet. He soon removed Rizwan, who misjudged a ball that drifted in, breaching the bat-pad gap and sending the stumps cartwheeling.

Pakistan’s tail quickly fell apart under the pressure. Gudakesh Motie claimed Noman Ali, and Warrican fittingly wrapped up the innings, having Sajid Khan drag one onto his stumps to seal the win. Warrican’s stellar five-wicket haul brought his series tally to an impressive 19 wickets, a performance that will surely be remembered for years to come.

As the West Indies erupted in celebration, Warrican’s signature thigh-thumping celebration became the emblem of their stunning achievement. The visitors had outplayed Pakistan at their own game, proving that spin could reign supreme even on foreign soil.

Brief Score:

West Indies: 163 & 244 (Kraigg Brathwaite 52, Tevin Imlach 35; Sajid Khan 4/76)
Pakistan: 154 & 133 (Babar Azam 31, Mohammad Rizwan 25; Jomel Warrican 5/27)

With the series now tied, both teams will be gearing up for an exciting decider in what has already been a captivating contest.

Sri Lanka’s cricketing prodigy, Kamindu Mendis, has been crowned the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year, marking a sensational rise in the international cricket scene. The 26-year-old left-handed batter had an extraordinary 2024, accumulating 1451 runs across formats and establishing himself as one of the most promising talents in the sport.

Mendis’ consistency was on full display throughout the year, with an average exceeding 50, solidifying his place among the top players in the world. Despite entering 2024 with only a single Test appearance, Mendis quickly became a vital all-format player for Sri Lanka, impressing fans and critics alike with his ability to perform under pressure.

In Test cricket, Mendis delivered some exceptional performances, accumulating 1049 runs in nine matches, with an impressive average of 74.92. His remarkable ability to convert starts into big scores saw him score five centuries and three half-centuries, making him one of only six players to surpass 1000 Test runs in 2024. His stellar average was the highest among them, showcasing his remarkable consistency.

One of the standout moments in Mendis’ career came in England, where he played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s first Test victory there in over a decade. His contributions were key in Sri Lanka’s push for a place in the ICC World Test Championship Final, showcasing his ability to perform on the biggest stage.

Mendis’ achievements also saw him match an incredible record—he became the joint-third fastest player to reach 1000 Test runs, achieving the feat in just 13 innings, tying with none other than the legendary Don Bradman.

Among his many highlights, the second Test against New Zealand in Galle stood out as a career-defining performance. Mendis scored a career-best 182*, anchoring Sri Lanka to a commanding 602/5. His remarkable knock, which spanned 250 balls and featured 16 boundaries and four sixes, helped Sri Lanka to a dominant 2-0 series victory. Mendis’ stellar performance in this match earned him the Player of the Match award and solidified his status as one of Sri Lanka’s key players.

Kamindu Mendis’ rise in 2024 has been nothing short of meteoric. His ability to perform under pressure, combined with his technical skill and mental fortitude, has made him one of Sri Lanka’s most reliable players. His recognition as the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year is only the beginning of what promises to be an illustrious career on the world stage.

Sydney, January 2: With the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaching, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, expressed his “extreme confidence” in his team’s ability to secure a win against Australia in the upcoming Sydney Test.

India enters the final match of the series on the back of an 184-run loss to Australia in the Melbourne Test, which gave the hosts a 2-1 lead. This defeat also dashed India’s hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s early next year. Despite the setback, Gambhir remains unwavering in his belief that the Indian side has what it takes to prevail in Sydney.

During a pre-match press conference, Gambhir emphasized that the team has the right skill set and individual talent to clinch victory in the fifth and final match of the series. He highlighted the potential for even greater achievements in the future with the current squad.

“Extremely, extremely confident. You know, we’ve got the skill set, we’ve got the individuals, we’ve got everything in the dressing room that can win a test match here. Not only here, but probably go on to do some unbelievable things in the future as well. So, extremely confident,” Gambhir said.

However, India will need to adjust to a forced change in their lineup. Gambhir confirmed that pacer Akash Deep would be absent from the Sydney Test due to a back injury. The 28-year-old will not feature in the playing eleven, leaving the team to manage without him in the final match of the series.

“As of now, Akash Deep is out (for the fifth test) due to a back injury,” Gambhir stated.

India’s squad for the final match includes: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prasidh Krishna, Shubman Gill, Devdutt Padikkal, Tanush Kotian, Dhruv Jurel, and Harshit Rana.

The final Test will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting January 3, with both teams gearing up for a thrilling conclusion to the series.

Brisbane (Australia), December 18: Ravichandran Ashwin, the legendary Indian spinner, bid farewell to international cricket in an emotional speech at The Gabba in Brisbane. After announcing his retirement from the international stage, Ashwin expressed his willingness to support his fellow teammates and made it clear that he would always be just a call away for anyone who needs help.

The announcement took many by surprise when Ashwin walked out alongside India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, signaling the end of his illustrious cricketing career. The emotional moment was made even more poignant when a camera captured Ashwin sharing a heartfelt exchange with Virat Kohli on the final day of the Test match. Kohli’s embrace made it evident that something significant was about to unfold.

In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Ashwin spoke of the emotional weight of the moment. “I don’t know how to go about this honestly… It is truly a very emotional moment for me. It feels just like 2011-12 when I toured here, my first Australian tour and I saw a transition. Rahul (Dravid) bhai left, Sachin (Tendulkar) paaji left. Trust me guys, everybody’s time comes and today was truly my time,” Ashwin reflected, recalling how he witnessed the departure of greats in the past.

A Legend Bids Adieu to International Cricket 👏👏

Hear what R Ashwin’s parting words were to the Indian dressing room 🎥🔽#TeamIndia | @ashwinravi99 https://t.co/6wtwdDOmzX
— BCCI (@BCCI) December 18, 2024

Ashwin went on to confirm that although he would be returning home, he would continue to follow the team’s progress. “I will be taking a flight back home but will tune in to see how well you guys do in Melbourne. The international cricketer in me might have come to an end, but the cricket nut in me will never come to an end. I will be looking forward to each one of your performances and all the very best. For all you guys, if you need anything, I am just a call away,” Ashwin added.

Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of an era in red-ball cricket. Making his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies, Ashwin quickly became one of the game’s finest spinners. Throughout his career, he played 106 Tests, claiming an impressive 537 wickets, including 37 five-wicket hauls, and scoring 3,503 runs. Ashwin’s formidable record includes 115 wickets in 23 matches against Australia, with an economy rate of 2.71.

The 38-year-old is also the record-holder for most wickets taken in a single Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, having picked up 29 wickets in the 2020-21 edition. He is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, a feat that underscores his exceptional contributions to the game.

While Ashwin’s international cricket career has come to a close, his love for the sport remains undiminished, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Brisbane [Australia], December 16: The Bureau of Meteorology of Australia has forecasted a 90% chance of rain for the final two days of the Brisbane Test between Australia and India, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The forecast predicts rainfall of 5 to 30 mm on Tuesday and 2 to 25 mm on Wednesday.

Earlier today, rain interrupted play during the third session of Day 3 at The Gabba, with India trailing Australia’s total by a significant 394 runs. At stumps, India was struggling at 51/4, with KL Rahul (33*) and skipper Rohit Sharma (0*) unbeaten at the crease.

India resumed the third session at 48/4, with Rahul and Rohit holding on after scoring 30 (52) and 0 (1), respectively. However, rain washed out most of the session, allowing only three overs, during which India added just three runs.

In the second session, rain had briefly interrupted play before resumption saw Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul attempting to build momentum. Pant picked up runs from loose deliveries, but the partnership was short-lived as Australian skipper Pat Cummins dismissed Pant (9) with a beautifully pitched delivery that nicked the batter’s outside edge and landed safely in Alex Carey’s gloves.

Rahul, undeterred, played a stunning cover drive off Cummins and continued the fight with a four off Mitchell Starc. However, rain once again intervened, stalling India’s attempt to build a recovery.

Earlier in the first session of Day 3, Australia dominated proceedings despite rain interruptions. Jasprit Bumrah removed Mitchell Starc early, who had looked dangerous after a powerful slog-sweep six off Ravindra Jadeja. Bumrah forced an edge from Starc, sending the ball to Rishabh Pant for a crucial dismissal.

Mohammed Siraj then broke through Nathan Lyon’s defense, clean bowling him. Australia’s innings finally ended at 445 when Alex Carey mistimed a shot off Akash Deep.

In reply, India’s batting lineup crumbled under the pressure of Australia’s pace attack, led by Mitchell Starc. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 1 after a brief boundary, handing an easy catch to Mitchell Marsh. Shubman Gill (1) and Virat Kohli (3) followed soon after, falling to Starc and Josh Hazlewood, respectively.

Brief Scores:
Australia 445 (Travis Head 152, Steven Smith 151; Jasprit Bumrah 6-76)
India 51/4 (KL Rahul 33; Mitchell Starc 2-25)*

Rain looms as a major factor heading into the final two days of the Test, threatening to disrupt the game further and possibly prevent a result.
