New Delhi, January 26, 2025: The 76th Republic Day celebrations in India witnessed a spectacular display of patriotism, valor, and cultural unity as President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag at Kartavya Path, marking the beginning of the grand festivities. This year’s celebrations were a tribute to the nation’s rich heritage, its armed forces’ bravery, and the growing spirit of national integration.

As the tricolor fluttered high in the sky, a thunderous 21-gun salute rang out with the firing of 105-mm Light Field Guns, an indigenous weapon system that symbolizes India’s military prowess. The President was joined by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, the chief guest for the occasion, in a grand ceremonial procession. The two heads of state were escorted by the President’s Bodyguard, India’s senior-most regiment, as they arrived in the iconic ‘traditional buggy,’ a ceremonial practice that had been revived in 2024 after a 40-year hiatus.

The parade at Kartavya Path was a visual feast, starting with a stirring rendition of “Sare Jahan Se Achha” played by 300 cultural artists using traditional musical instruments from across the country. The ensemble included the Shehnai, Sundari, Nadaswaram, Been, and Mashak Been, along with instruments like the Ransingha, dhol, gong, and Thavil, among others. This blend of regional sounds resonated with the unity and diverse culture of the Indian subcontinent, capturing the hearts of millions across the nation.

One of the most poignant moments of the day was the recognition of gallantry award winners. The Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime honor, was awarded to Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retd) and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar (Retd). Lt Col Jas Ram Singh (Retd) was honored with the Ashok Chakra for his bravery and sacrifice. These heroes of the nation reminded everyone of the supreme courage displayed by the men and women of India’s armed forces.

In a solemn tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, located at the iconic India Gate. Following this, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries proceeded to the saluting dais at Kartavya Path to witness the parade in all its glory.

In an unprecedented move, this year’s celebrations also saw around 10,000 special guests invited to witness the parade. These guests, from diverse backgrounds, represented the many faces of a vibrant and progressive India. Their inclusion was in line with the government’s goal to enhance ‘Jan Bhagidari’ or public participation in national events, showcasing individuals who have excelled in various fields and made the most of government schemes.

For the first time, a tri-services tableau highlighted the spirit of jointness and integration among India’s armed forces. The tableau, themed ‘Shashakt aur Surakshit Bharat’ (Empowered and Secure India), depicted a Joint Operations Room designed to improve communication and coordination across the three services – Army, Navy, and Air Force – emphasizing India’s military modernization.

The Republic Day festivities will conclude with the ‘Beating Retreat Ceremony’ on January 29 at Vijay Chowk. This age-old military tradition marks the cessation of battle at sunset, symbolizing the soldiers’ return to camp as they sheath their arms. For the first time in history, only Indian tunes will be played by the participating military bands, underlining the country’s rich musical heritage.

This year’s Republic Day celebrations were a powerful reminder of India’s unwavering commitment to unity, progress, and the valor of its armed forces, with a vivid display of cultural diversity that painted a hopeful picture of a resurgent nation.

The Ukrainian Embassy in India marked a poignant and symbolic event on January 22, celebrating “Unity Day” with the formation of a “Chain of Unity” in New Delhi. This annual observance highlights the significance of Ukrainian unity and its enduring role in the nation’s history and present-day struggle.

The embassy, along with the Ukrainian community in India, came together to create a symbolic chain, echoing the “Chain of Unity” formed on January 21, 1990. On that historic day, millions of Ukrainians joined hands from Kyiv to Lviv, expressing their collective resolve and determination. The embassy emphasized that unity has been a cornerstone of Ukraine’s statehood, a value that continues to resonate deeply, especially as the country faces ongoing aggression from Russia.

The Ukrainian Embassy in India stated, “Unity has always been a cornerstone of Ukrainian statehood, and history shows we have triumphed when standing together.” The gesture in New Delhi was not only a reflection of this history but also a tribute to the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people. The embassy added, “Today, as we defend Ukraine from Russian aggression, we honour the memory of the defenders who gave their lives for freedom and unity.”

This year marks the third consecutive year of Unity Day celebrations amid the ongoing war with Russia. The embassy underscored that unity is Ukraine’s greatest strength in resisting foreign aggression and fighting for its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence.

Additionally, the Ukrainian Embassy commemorated the 106th anniversary of the Act of Unification, which took place on January 22, 1919. This pivotal moment in Ukrainian history saw the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic unite, laying the foundation for a unified Ukrainian state. The Act, signed in St. Sophia Square in Kyiv, symbolized Ukraine’s long-standing aspiration for independence and unity, values that continue to drive the nation today.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy highlighted the enduring significance of the Unification Act: “Signed at St. Sophia Square in Kyiv, the Unification Act symbolized the fulfillment of Ukraine’s long-standing dream of unity and independence—a cornerstone of our statehood.”

🇺🇦 For the 3rd consecutive year, Ukraine celebrates Unity Day amidst a full-scale war.
As part of the observance, the Ukrainian Embassy in India called on the global Ukrainian community to remain united in their efforts. “Together, we will restore peace, justice, and ensure the voice of Ukraine resonates loudly across the world,” the statement concluded.

Ukraine’s Unity Day continues to serve as a reminder of the country’s unwavering commitment to sovereignty, freedom, and independence. Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the war with Russia, Ukraine’s unity remains a powerful symbol of strength and resilience.

New Delhi, January 19, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address during the 118th episode of his radio programme Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, celebrated the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025, describing it as an extraordinary confluence of unity, equality, and harmony. PM Modi’s reflections on the grand event focused on its significance in bringing people together from all over India and the world, promoting values of equality and social harmony that transcend caste, creed, and geographic boundaries.

The Prime Minister noted the overwhelming scenes at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, emphasizing its role in showcasing “unforgettable crowds” and “unimaginable scenes” that highlight the spiritual confluence at the Sangam. “This time many divine yogas are also being formed in Kumbh. This festival of Kumbh celebrates unity in diversity. People from all over India and the world gather on the sands of Sangam. There is no discrimination or casteism anywhere in this tradition that has been going on for thousands of years,” said PM Modi. He went on to highlight how participants, regardless of their background, partake in the sacred rituals such as the holy dip in the Sangam, community feasts, and sharing of Prasad—emphasizing the festival’s embodiment of unity.

PM Modi also pointed out that such traditions extend beyond the northern part of India, referencing the Pushkaram festival in the south. Just as Kumbh is organized in places like Prayagraj, Ujjain, Nashik, and Haridwar, similar events take place in the southern states along rivers like Narmada, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri. The common thread between these celebrations, PM Modi said, is the connection to India’s sacred rivers and shared spiritual heritage. “The organisation of Kumbh also tells us that our tradition binds the whole of India together. The ways to follow beliefs are similar in the northern and southern parts of India,” he added.

The Prime Minister expressed pride in the fact that the Maha Kumbh has gained global recognition and continues to draw large crowds, including a significant participation of the youth. He emphasized the importance of involving young people in these age-old traditions, asserting that this connection will ensure a bright future for India. “This time, youth is participating in huge numbers in Kumbh and when youth is associated with its traditions, its bright future is ensured,” he said. Moreover, PM Modi highlighted the growing digital footprint of the Kumbh, which has enhanced its global popularity and reach.

PM Modi also took the opportunity to mention the Gangasagar Mela, which was recently held in West Bengal during Makar Sankranti. The Mela, which saw lakhs of devotees taking a holy dip, was another example of India’s deep-rooted cultural and spiritual practices that foster unity and social interaction.

The Prime Minister spoke about the significance of such festivals in promoting not only spiritual growth but also social, cultural, and economic cohesion. “Our festivals, Kumbh, Pushkaram, and Gangasagar Mela encourage our social interactions, harmony, and unity. It connects the people of India with its traditions. The way our scriptures have emphasized religion, wealth, desire, and salvation, similarly our festivals strengthen spiritual, social, cultural, and economic aspects,” he said.

In a broader context, PM Modi also addressed the celebration of the first anniversary of the Ram Lala consecration in Ayodhya, which took place on January 11. He underscored the need to preserve India’s rich heritage while continuing on the path of development. “We have to save our heritage while being on the path of development and move forward while taking inspiration from it,” the Prime Minister concluded.

Mann Ki Baat, launched on October 3, 2014, is a monthly radio programme where PM Modi interacts with the people of India, discussing important national issues. The programme, which airs on the last Sunday of every month, has now been scheduled for the third Sunday in January due to the Republic Day celebrations on the last Sunday. It is broadcast across India in 22 languages and 29 dialects, as well as in 11 foreign languages including French, Chinese, and Arabic.

Through Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi continues to engage with a wide audience, including women, the elderly, youth, and people from diverse regions and cultures, promoting national unity and pride while addressing critical issues affecting the country.
