Madhya Pradesh’s Cheetah Family Grows to 26 with 2 New Cubs
The cheetah family in Madhya Pradesh has grown to 26 with the birth of two new cubs at Kuno National Park in Sheopur district. This development marks a significant milestone in India’s Project Cheetah, which aims to revive the cheetah population after its extinction in the country. The cubs were born to Veera, a female cheetah, on Tuesday, and the birth has been celebrated by local authorities and wildlife enthusiasts.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his joy over the birth, sharing the news on social media. In his message, he highlighted the growing cheetah population and its positive impact on tourism and employment in the state. The addition of the cubs brings the total number of cheetahs in Kuno to 26, including 12 adults and 14 cubs.
Project Cheetah was launched to restore the cheetah population in India. Since its inception, 20 cheetahs have been translocated to Kuno National Park, including eight from Namibia and 12 from South Africa. While the project faced some setbacks with the death of eight adult cheetahs, it has seen success with 17 cubs born, 12 of which have survived.
This growing cheetah population is seen as a positive development for wildlife conservation efforts and the local economy, providing new opportunities for ecotourism and sustainable job creation in Madhya Pradesh.
